Pursuing higher education abroad is a dream for many students, but cost can be a significant barrier. While some countries are known for high tuition fees and living expenses, Kuwait can offer comparatively lower-cost options for students who are already in the region or who qualify for affordable fee structures. Known for its culture, economic prosperity, and modern infrastructure, Kuwait remains a possible destination for students seeking quality education without the highest international price tag. This article provides an overview of some of the more budget-friendly universities in Kuwait to help prospective students make informed decisions about their academic future.

The key to finding an affordable university in Kuwait lies in understanding the difference between public and private institutions. Public universities, including Kuwait University and Abdullah Al-Salem University, are government institutions. Kuwait University, the country’s first public research institution of higher education, remains a major public option for students. Private universities generally charge higher per-credit fees, but some offer flexible admissions, installment plans, and scholarship or financial aid opportunities that can help offset costs.

In this article, we will look at several affordable universities in Kuwait and review the tuition fees for international students where current fee information is publicly available.

Affordable Schools in Kuwait for International Students

1. Arab Open University (AOU) – Kuwait Branch

Arab Open University (AOU) is a regional university network built on an open and blended learning model. The Kuwait branch offers undergraduate programs in areas such as Business Studies, Information Technology and Computing, and English Language and Literature. AOU is also a partner institution of the Open University in the United Kingdom for OU-validated awards. The university’s blended structure combines online learning with required face-to-face tutorials and assessments, which can be useful for students who need a more flexible study schedule.

AOU Kuwait charges per credit hour. Current undergraduate credit-hour rates vary by course and faculty: general requirement courses are listed at KWD 18.5 per credit, English Language and Literature courses at KWD 23 per credit, and Business Studies courses at KWD 25 per credit. Based on 30 credit hours per year, annual tuition would be approximately KWD 555–750, or about USD 1,800–2,440, excluding admission, registration, IT, placement test, and other required fees. This makes Arab Open University (AOU) – Kuwait Branch the lowest-cost option among the universities listed here.

2. Kuwait University

  • Reported Tuition Fees
  • Tuition Fees: KWD 100 per credit/unit (reported for self-financed foreign students; applicants should confirm the current fee directly with the university)

Kuwait University is the country’s first public research institution of higher education. It was established in 1966 with the goal of serving the needs of Kuwait and the wider region. The university offers a broad range of colleges and programs, including medicine, engineering, law, arts, and sciences, and it has a strong focus on research and community service. Because it is a public institution, Kuwait University may be a more affordable option than many private universities, especially for students admitted under supported or special admission categories.

For self-financed foreign students, Kuwait University has been reported to charge KWD 100 per credit or unit, with a KWD 10 application or confirmation fee. The university’s official admissions information confirms that self-financed foreign students may apply if they meet the general requirements, but applicants should verify the latest fee schedule directly with Kuwait University before applying. Based on 30 credit hours for undergraduate students, the tuition estimate would be about KWD 3,000, or around USD 9,700 per year. Based on 18 credit hours for master’s students, the estimate would be about KWD 1,800, or around USD 5,850 per year.

Kuwait University also has specific admission categories for some non-Kuwaiti students, including cultural grants and limited scholarship categories. However, these are not general tuition discounts for all international students, so prospective applicants should check the eligibility rules for their nationality, school background, and admission category before planning their budget.

3. Kuwait College of Science and Technology

With 30 credit hours, tuition would be approximately KWD 5,250, or about USD 17,000 per year, excluding application, entrance exam, acceptance, foundation course, textbook, and other fees. 4. Gulf University for Science and Technology

  • Tuition Fees
  • Tuition Fees: KWD 210–260 per credit (Undergraduate) | KWD 240 per credit (MBA)

Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) began its journey in 2002 as Kuwait’s first private university. Its campus is located in Mubarak Al-Abdullah, also known as West Mishref. The university also offers a Master of Business Administration (MBA) program. GUST has had a strategic partnership with the University of Missouri–St. Louis (UMSL), and its international opportunities have included programs and summer scholarships connected with UMSL and George Washington University.

Assuming 30 credit hours per year, undergraduate tuition is approximately KWD 6,300 per year for College of Arts and Sciences and College of Business Administration courses, or about USD 20,500. For College of Engineering and Architecture courses, 30 credit hours would cost approximately KWD 7,800, or about USD 25,300. For MBA students taking 18 credit hours per year, tuition would be approximately KWD 4,320, or about USD 14,000. Although this is more expensive than some other options in Kuwait, GUST offers scholarship and financial aid opportunities. Some awards are open to all nationalities, but the amount is decided by committee and does not necessarily cover the full cost of tuition.

For many international students, tuition is one of the first criteria when choosing a university abroad. Kuwait has several options that may be more affordable than institutions in higher-cost destinations, especially when students compare per-credit tuition, program length, and scholarship opportunities. As an international student, you may be able to find both scholarship opportunities and comparatively affordable universities in Kuwait.
