The Journey

name is Mohammed Radman AL-Matari, and I am from Sana’a, Yemen. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Computers and Control, from Sana’a University, which I completed in 2021.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Science at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST), where I graduated with distinction. I chose Data Science because of my growing interest in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and the use of data to solve real-world problems. My engineering background provided me with a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, and analytical problem-solving, which helped me transition naturally into Data Science.

During my Master’s, I became particularly interested in machine learning security, which led me to conduct research on security challenges in Federated Learning, particularly data poisoning and model inversion attacks. This experience strengthened my interest in research and in using technology to address practical challenges.

DAAD In-Region Scholarship Details

I received the DAAD In-Region Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies for Yemenis in Jordan, funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The scholarship enabled me to pursue a Master’s degree in Data Science at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) in Irbid, Jordan.

The scholarship is part of DAAD’s In-Country/In-Region Scholarship Programme, which supports qualified graduates from developing countries in pursuing postgraduate education within their region. For Yemeni students, the programme provides opportunities to pursue selected Master’s programmes at participating Jordanian universities. M.Sc. Data Science at JUST is one of the programmes supported by the scholarship.

The scholarship provided comprehensive financial support, including tuition fees, a monthly scholarship payment of €600, a travel allowance, study and research support, and a printing allowance. DAAD also covers eligible tuition fees directly with the host university.

For me, the scholarship was more than financial support. It gave me the opportunity to pursue a specialized degree in a field I was passionate about while studying at a strong regional university. It also allowed me to develop academically and professionally and eventually conduct research in an area that became an important part of my career: artificial intelligence and machine learning security.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes. I was also accepted for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) for postgraduate study in China.

The scholarship was a full scholarship and included tuition fees, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, and a monthly living stipend of CNY 3,000 for Master’s students. The exact value of the tuition and accommodation component depends on the host university and programme.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Computers and Control, from Sana’a University, Yemen, which I completed in 2021 with a final grade of 92.48%.

My undergraduate studies gave me a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, computer systems, control systems, and analytical problem-solving. Through my engineering courses and projects, I developed an interest in programming and computational methods, which gradually led me toward data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Building on this background, I pursued a Master’s degree in Data Science at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST). I graduated with a GPA of 4.12 out of 4.30 and with distinction. During the program, I developed more advanced knowledge and practical skills in data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and research methodology.

My engineering background was particularly helpful when applying for the Data Science program because it provided me with the quantitative, programming, and problem-solving skills required for the field. At the same time, my Master’s degree allowed me to build on those foundations and specialize further in machine learning and data-driven research. This combination eventually led me to focus my research on security challenges in machine learning, particularly data poisoning and model inversion attacks in Federated Learning.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)?

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I prepared for my applications by making sure that I had all the required documents ready in advance. I collected and organized my academic transcripts, certificates, CV, identification documents, recommendation letters, and other supporting documents so that I could submit applications efficiently when suitable opportunities became available.

I found information about scholarships and universities mainly by researching available opportunities online and reviewing the requirements of the universities and scholarship programs. There was also a group on social media that posts scholarships for Yemeni students.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD In-Region Scholarship?

As part of my preparation, I also took the TOEFL iBT English proficiency test and achieved a score of 108/120. I prepared for the test by practicing the different sections, becoming familiar with the test format, and improving my academic English, particularly in reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Having the English test completed in advance also made it easier for me to apply to programs that required proof of English proficiency.

Similar to preparing for the institute, I also prepared the proper documents simultaneously for the scholarship as well as the DAAD. Because the application and acceptance to DAAD came first, prior to registration at the institute.

How is Your Experience at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST)?

My experience at Jordan University of Science and Technology was very positive. The program provided me with a strong academic foundation in Data Science and gave me the opportunity to develop both my technical and research skills.

I particularly appreciated the academic environment and the opportunity to work with professors and researchers in different areas of Data Science. My Master's experience also gave me the opportunity to conduct research and develop my thesis in an area that I was genuinely interested in, which was an important part of my academic growth.

How Do You Rate Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) Academically?

I would rate Jordan University of Science and Technology very highly academically. It has a strong reputation in science, technology, engineering, and medical fields, and I found the academic environment to be challenging and supportive.

For my field, I particularly valued the combination of theoretical knowledge and practical applications, as well as the opportunity to conduct research as part of my Master's degree. The university's academic environment helped me strengthen both my technical knowledge and research skills.

How Does Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) Support International Students?

As an international student, I found the university's administrative and academic systems generally accessible. The university provides dedicated admission and student-service systems for international students, and students can complete many procedures electronically.

The university also provides facilities and services that support students during their studies, including healthcare services, transportation options, laboratories, libraries, and other campus facilities. The university's international student officer is really a great place to seek help; the people there are the best.

Is the Institution That You Are Studying at Free for the Master's in Data Science? If You Had to Pay Semester Fees, How Much Was It?

It was not free; you had to pay. However, the DAAD scholarship handled this process entirely.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Arabic?

The classes were conducted in English, but the country's language was Arabic.

What Did You Pursue After the DAAD In-Region Scholarship?

After the scholarship, I pursued work opportunities. However, I might pursue a PhD after two or three years in the field.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Arabic?

Probably not, as the majority of the university staff there are well-educated, and many can speak English as a second language.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of my strong academic record, technical background, and clear motivation to pursue Data Science. My 92.48% Bachelor's grade, engineering background, and interest in artificial intelligence and machine learning demonstrated that I had a strong foundation for the program. Furthermore, fulfilling the language requirement made a huge difference.

I also had clear academic and career goals and was able to explain how the scholarship would help me develop the skills and knowledge needed for my future. As a Yemeni student, I also saw the opportunity as a way to develop expertise that I could eventually use to contribute to my community and the region.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have researched the faculty members and their research areas more thoroughly at an earlier stage. This would have helped me identify a suitable supervisor and establish an agreement with them before starting the program. Having a supervisor confirmed early would have saved significant time and allowed me to start working on my thesis much earlier.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is to start preparing early and stay organized. Research scholarships and universities carefully, understand their eligibility requirements, and keep your documents ready before you find an opportunity.

I also recommend creating a simple checklist or Excel file for each scholarship to track the required documents and deadlines. Having a valid English proficiency certificate, such as TOEFL, in advance can also make the application process much easier.

Most importantly, don't hesitate to apply even if the competition is high. Focus on presenting your academic background, goals, and motivation clearly, and explain how the opportunity fits into your future plans.

Finally, I would strongly recommend taking the opportunity if you get it. It is a great experience that I would encourage everyone to pursue. It not only benefits you academically; it can also reshape your perspective, expose you to new ideas and cultures, and change the way you think and approach different things in life.
