The UAE is widely recognized as a regional economic hub, supported by modern infrastructure and global business links. Many Emirati students consider studying abroad to access specialized undergraduate, graduate, and diploma programs, as universities around the world continue to expand international study options.

Students must do extensive research before applying to an international institution, as each destination has different academic, financial, visa, and recognition requirements. Emirati students planning to study abroad should choose a destination that will help them succeed professionally and give them ample opportunities for learning.

In this article, we list some of the top study-abroad destinations and universities for students from the United Arab Emirates.

Top Countries to Study for Emirati Students

Based on academic reputation, program variety, student support, living costs, and career opportunities, we have compiled a list of strong study-abroad destinations for Emirati students.

1. United States of America

The United States remains one of the strongest study-abroad destinations for Emirati students because it has many globally ranked universities, strong research activity, and a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Students can find programs at large research universities, liberal arts colleges, and specialized institutes.

It also hosts one of the world’s largest international student populations, and many campuses offer international offices, student support services, Muslim student associations, and multicultural communities. Some of the top US universities offering a range of undergraduate and graduate programs are Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Princeton University, and California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

In the United States, tuition and living costs vary widely by institution, city, degree level, and lifestyle. Emirati students should check each university’s official cost of attendance and prepare proof that they can cover tuition, fees, living expenses, and health insurance for the first year. Students may also explore institutional scholarships, UAE government scholarship programs, and other external funding, but financial aid for international students is usually competitive. The US student visa process requires admission to a SEVP-approved school, a Form I-20, SEVIS registration, and a student visa application through the US embassy or consulate.

2. United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is a popular choice for international students because of its global academic reputation, multicultural communities, English-taught programs, and broad range of universities and higher education providers. For UAE students, the availability of one-year master’s degrees and strong international student support can make the UK an attractive option. Here is a selection of some of the best-known universities in the UK for undergraduate and graduate studies in areas of interest to Emirati students: University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh, University of Manchester, and King’s College London.

Students from the UAE should budget carefully. Study UK estimates living costs at around £1,300 to £1,400 per month in London and £900 to £1,300 per month elsewhere in the UK. For the Student visa financial requirement, applicants currently need to show £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months, unless an exemption applies. Scholarships and financial aid for international undergraduates are less common than postgraduate funding, but they may be available through universities, third-party organizations, or UAE scholarship providers. Students should check only official university and government websites before applying.

3. Australia

Australia is one of the best countries to study for Emirati students. Its universities perform strongly in global rankings, and the country offers English-taught courses, research opportunities, cultural diversity, a high standard of living, and options for work-integrated learning. Students from the UAE should compare programs, entry requirements, tuition fees, and student visa rules before applying.

One of Australia’s selling points as a study-abroad destination is the opportunity to immerse oneself in a diverse cultural environment and scenic surroundings. Australian National University, the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland, and the University of Western Australia are some of the most prestigious institutions in Australia offering relevant undergraduate and graduate programs for Emirati students.

The cost of living in Australia is higher than in many destinations, and actual costs vary by city and lifestyle. For the student visa, applicants may need to show funds for travel, tuition, 12 months of living costs, health insurance, and other required expenses. The minimum savings amount for student visa living costs is now higher than the A$21,000 figure previously used, so students should use the official Study Australia cost-of-living calculator and the Department of Home Affairs checklist before budgeting. Institutions often provide financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships to eligible students.

4. France

The next country on our list is France, a top destination for higher education for Emirati students because it offers strong academic opportunities and relatively low tuition at many public institutions compared with several other major study-abroad destinations. Public university fees for non-EU students are subsidized, but many first-time bachelor’s and master’s students from outside the EU pay differentiated tuition, so Emirati students should check the latest fee rules for each university and program.

French higher education is strong in many ways, including its ability to integrate theoretical study with real-world application. Institutions of higher learning dedicated to the advancement of scientific fields have also developed strong links between research and instruction. International students in France may work up to 964 hours per year, but part-time work should be treated as supplemental income rather than the main source of funding. Several French institutions provide scholarships or tuition exemptions to eligible international students.

Some strong French institutions for Emirati students to consider are Sorbonne University, École Normale Supérieure, Paris-Saclay University, and École Polytechnique.

5. Singapore

Singapore is a strong option for Emirati students who want an English-speaking Asian study destination with high-performing schools, efficient public transport, and globally ranked universities. Students should compare programs, campus support, tuition, living costs, and visa conditions carefully before applying.

Singapore continues to be a high performer in international education assessments. In the OECD’s latest PISA cycle, Singapore scored above the OECD average in mathematics, reading, and science, and Singaporean universities such as NUS and NTU remain highly ranked globally. Here are some of the finest universities in Singapore that Emiratis can consider: National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU), and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

Students should plan a budget that includes tuition, accommodation, meals, transport, books, and personal expenses. For example, NUS estimates S$6,000 per academic year excluding accommodation, while on-campus accommodation can add about S$4,000 to S$10,290 depending on hostel and room type. The ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship is for citizens of ASEAN member countries, so UAE citizens are not eligible unless they meet a separate scholarship’s specific criteria. Emirati students should look for university-specific scholarships and UAE scholarship options instead.

Many UAE students consider higher education abroad to broaden their academic and career options. However, they should always verify program recognition, visa rules, tuition fees, and scholarship conditions through official sources before making a final decision. Emirati students should also check the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s rules for recognized overseas institutions, approved majors, and scholarship eligibility, especially if they plan to use a UAE government scholarship or want their degree recognized for work in the UAE.
