With an estimated population of 118.4 million in 2025, Egypt is the most populous country in the Arab world. Its population is expected to continue growing through 2030. As demand for higher education expands, many Egyptian students consider studying abroad to pursue degree programs and gain international experience.
Top Countries to Study for Egyptian Students
1. United Kingdom
The United Kingdom offers international students a wide range of degree programs. In much of the UK, a full-time bachelor’s degree typically takes three years, while many taught master’s degrees can be completed in one year. However, course length varies by program and institution.
The major universities where Egyptian students can pursue their studies include the University of Manchester, King’s College London, the University of Liverpool, Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Warwick, and the University of Sheffield.
Selecting a specific area and location of study is an important decision for international students. London generally requires a higher budget than cities such as Manchester and Leeds. Under the current Student visa financial requirement, applicants must generally show that they have £1,529 per month for study in London or £1,171 per month for study outside London, for up to nine months. Actual living expenses may be higher.
Scholarship availability changes by intake. The University of Manchester’s Global Futures Scholarships included eligible students domiciled in Egypt. King’s College London’s African Leadership Centre also offered bursaries to eligible African applicants to its full-time MSc Global Leadership and Peacebuilding program.
2. Germany
Germany can be an affordable option for Egyptian students because most public universities do not charge tuition for many first-degree programs. However, exceptions apply. Students may still need to pay semester contributions, while tuition may be charged by private institutions, certain specialized programs, and public universities in some German states.
Universities that Egyptian students may consider include the University of Bonn, Worms University of Applied Sciences, the Technical University of Munich, the Free University of Berlin, and other German institutions.
The German Academic Exchange Service estimates that students generally need about €900 to €1,200 per month for living expenses. International students who are required to provide proof of financing generally need €11,904 for one year, equivalent to €992 per month.
Students can search for funding through the German Academic Exchange Service scholarship database. The University of Bonn’s BIGS-DR is a structured doctoral program, but admission does not automatically provide every student with a scholarship. Alexander von Humboldt Foundation research fellowships may include family-related benefits when the relevant eligibility conditions are met.
3. Italy
Many Italian universities and other organizations offer scholarships or tuition reductions to eligible international students, including applicants from Egypt. Italy’s universities, cultural environment, and range of academic programs make it a destination worth considering.
The University of Pavia, University of Bologna, University of Padua, and Bologna Business School are among the institutions Egyptian students may consider.
Living costs in Italy vary considerably by city, housing type, and lifestyle. Official university guidance indicates that a single room in cities such as Bologna or Padua may cost approximately €300 to €600 per month, generally excluding some utilities. Food, transportation, study materials, and personal expenses must be budgeted separately.
Scholarships and fee reductions have specific eligibility requirements. The University of Pavia’s CICOPS Scholarships support short-term research collaboration by eligible scholars from developing countries; they are not general scholarships for bachelor’s or master’s degree tuition. The University of Bologna offers various fee reductions and grants, but its International Talents @Unibo program was not renewed for future years after the 2025 call. Applicants should therefore consult the university’s current funding calls before applying.
4. Australia
Australia is the world’s sixth-largest country by land area and the smallest continental landmass. It has a broad higher education sector with universities in major cities and regional locations.
Universities Egyptian students may consider include Flinders University, Monash University, the University of Adelaide, and Edith Cowan University.
Living and tuition costs in Australia vary by city, institution, program, and lifestyle. Under the current Student visa financial requirement, applicants must generally show at least A$29,710 for 12 months of living costs. Actual expenses may be higher, and tuition fees must be budgeted separately.
Scholarship values and conditions differ by institution and intake. For example, Edith Cowan University’s International Masters Scholarship offered eligible students entering selected master’s programs a 20% tuition-fee reduction. Students should check the current eligibility criteria, covered courses, deadlines, and award values for every scholarship.
5. New Zealand
New Zealand offers a range of university programs, research opportunities, and scholarships for international students. Scholarship availability and eligibility vary by university, qualification, and intake.
Institutions Egyptian students may consider include the University of Auckland, Victoria University of Wellington, University of Waikato, and University of Canterbury.
For a tertiary-level student visa, applicants generally need to show NZ$20,000 for each year of study or NZ$1,667 per month when studying for less than one year. Actual expenses vary by city, housing choice, and lifestyle rather than simply by whether a university is on the North Island or South Island.
Examples of university funding include the University of Canterbury International First Year Scholarship (Offshore), worth NZ$15,000 toward tuition, and the University of Auckland School of Medical Sciences International Masters Scholarship, which may provide up to NZ$20,000 per year. Victoria University of Wellington also administers Hardship Fund Equity Grants for eligible students experiencing financial difficulty. Applicants should confirm current opening dates, eligibility rules, and award conditions on the universities’ official websites.
After comparing these countries and universities, students can create a shortlist based on their preferred program, admission requirements, budget, and available funding. They should always confirm current fees, application deadlines, scholarship conditions, and visa requirements through official sources before applying.
