The Journey

My name is Yuichiro Kameoka, and I am from Ehime Prefecture, Japan. I am currently an English teacher in Kanagawa Prefecture.

When I was in university, I majored in Second Language Acquisition, and my minor was Japanese Language Education. After graduating, I moved and became a high school English teacher.

I am currently in the United States as a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA), teaching Japanese at Carleton College. Through my studies and experience as a teacher, I have become particularly interested in language learners’ motivation and what encourages them to continue learning a language.

Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Details

I was awarded the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright program.

The FLTA Program is a nine-month, non-degree program that allows participants to teach their native language at a U.S. university while taking courses related to American studies and language teaching. As an FLTA, I teach Japanese and also have the opportunity to strengthen my English skills, develop my teaching abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of American culture and society.

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support, including:

  • Tuition for up to two courses per semester
  • A stipend, with the amount varying depending on the host university
  • University-provided housing and meals, depending on the host institution
  • Round-trip international airfare between Japan and the United States
  • Fulbright Group Insurance covering illness and accidents
  • Participation in Fulbright orientation and enrichment activities/conferences

The program is approximately nine months, generally covering one academic year. FLTAs teach or assist with Japanese-language classes for up to 20 hours per week, while also taking courses at their host university.

Educational Background

I graduated from Ehime University with a bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Law and Letters. I majored in Second Language Acquisition and minored in Japanese language education. After obtaining my teaching license, I became an English teacher.

Through my studies and teaching experience, I became interested in why language learners struggle with certain aspects of a foreign language. In particular, I have always found the linguistic distance between Japanese and English fascinating and challenging. My academic background in language acquisition and Japanese education, combined with my experience as an English teacher, prepared me well for the FLTA Program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Carleton College?

I first learned about the FLTA Program through the JASSO website and social media accounts sharing study-abroad information. I was particularly interested in language acquisition, so I was excited to discover a program that would allow me to engage in language education in an international environment.

I had known about the Fulbright Program since my undergraduate years and had visited its website before. Since the Fulbright office determines the host university for FLTA participants, I did not choose the university myself. However, I was already familiar with Carleton College through connections with its graduates.

For the application, I took the IELTS. I had previously taken the test as part of a program that selected English teachers from my prefecture to study in Australia. Since I was preparing while working full-time, I had limited time to study. I used my commute to listen to English news to improve my listening skills, studied different sections of the test after work, and worked through practice tests on weekends.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant?

I spent about six months preparing my application and actually completed my essay before the application guidelines were released. Since I had never written an application essay in English before, it was challenging.

I started with self-reflection and identified which aspects of my background and experience matched the qualities the program was looking for. I also asked friends and former teachers what they considered to be my strengths, including qualities that might not necessarily match the program’s ideal profile.

For my three recommendation letters, I asked current colleagues and former teachers. I also prepared for the interview using AI and received advice from an acquaintance who had previously participated in the FLTA Program. These different perspectives helped me better understand my own strengths and communicate them effectively throughout the application process.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my experience and interests made my application stand out. I studied Japanese language education at university and also worked as an English-speaking tour guide in Ehime Prefecture. These experiences gave me opportunities to engage with language and learners from different perspectives.

I have also been particularly interested in language learners’ motivation and the challenges they face when learning a new language. I believe that this combination of practical experience and academic interest matched well with what the FLTA Program was looking for.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would spend more time preparing for the interview and having more people review my essay. Getting feedback from people with different perspectives would have helped me improve my essay and better prepare for the interview.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My biggest advice is to start preparing as early as possible. Before writing your application, take time to reflect on your experiences, interests, and strengths. I also recommend asking people around you what they see as your strengths, because they may notice qualities that you do not recognize yourself.

Most importantly, don't try to become someone you think the program is looking for. Instead, think about what you can bring to the program and how your own experiences and interests can contribute to it.
