The Journey

My name is Syed Abdullah Shah, and I am from Pakistan. I completed my bachelor's degree in Applied Geology in my home country. After graduating, I wanted to pursue a master's degree, but I was determined to do it abroad. I wanted to gain international exposure and experience a different academic culture. So, I began searching for opportunities overseas. I shortlisted several scholarships, but my primary focus was on the fully funded CSC scholarship offered in China. I researched top universities in China that offered my field of study, and one of them was the China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB). I applied to CUPB, and after a competitive selection process, I was successfully awarded the fully funded CSC scholarship.

I came to China in 2023 and started my Master's in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, graduating in 2026. During my master's, I developed a deep interest in integrating AI and Machine Learning to solve geological problems. I conducted my thesis in this area and presented my work at multiple international forums. In my final year, I decided to pursue a PhD for two reasons: to master my field and become a better researcher, and to stand out in the job market. I applied to continue at CUPB with my master's supervisor and was fortunate to receive a fully funded CSC scholarship for the second time. I am now pursuing my PhD at CUPB.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which is a fully funded scholarship. This scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, a monthly stipend for living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Geology from Abbottabad University of Science and Technology (AUST), Pakistan, with a CGPA of 3.87. Beyond my studies, I served as Vice President of the Geo Learning Society in our department, where we conducted extensive fieldwork and workshops. I was also actively participating in conferences, including the 6th International Conference of Earth Sciences in Pakistan, the International Conference on Mineral and Ore Processing in Pakistan, and the All Pakistan DICE 2019 Mega Innovation and Entrepreneurship Event. Alongside my university learning, I was engaged in broadening my knowledge in my field by taking online courses, including Introduction to Petroleum Engineering from Tomsk Polytechnic University, Oil and Gas Industry Operations and Markets from Duke University, and Project Initiation and Planning from the University of California, Irvine.

For my Master's in Geological Resources and Geological Engineering at China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB), my research evolved with advancements in the field. I incorporated programming tools and machine learning to develop automated methodologies for more efficient reservoir characterization. I developed a large dataset of microscopic images of thin sections and used image processing to develop algorithms that segment, quantify, and classify the images. This approach provided a better understanding of the reservoir while avoiding human error.

During my master's, I presented my work at the Seminar on China-Russia Carbon Storage International Cooperation. I also attended international conferences, including the 2024 China International Oil and Gas Exploration Technology Annual Conference and the 2025 China Petroleum Equipment Management Technology Exchange Conference.

Beyond academics, I actively participated in co-curricular activities, including the Model United Nations Conference 2025, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Experience for International Students, and the Ming Dynasty Cultural Forum 2024.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB)?

After finding the university, my first step was to find a potential supervisor and obtain their acceptance letter. This was a crucial part of the process, as having a supervisor willing to accept you significantly strengthens your application. I researched faculty members in my field, read about their research work, and reached out with my CV and research interests. Fortunately, I received a positive response and secured my supervisor's acceptance.

Once I had the acceptance letter, I started preparing the required documents, which included:

  • Attested academic transcripts and degrees from my bachelor's program
  • A detailed study plan and research proposal
  • English proficiency certificate
  • Two recommendation letters from my undergraduate professors
  • A police clearance certificate from a local police station
  • A medical certificate along with all the reports from a private or a government hospital
  • Passport and photographs

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship?

The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) has two main application tracks.

Type A (Bilateral Program): You apply through a Chinese embassy or your home country's dispatching authority. You can list up to two university choices, and the embassy forwards your application to those institutions. There is a qualifying test or examination, followed by an interview if shortlisted. Upon passing, the university uploads the admission letter for final CSC review.

Type B (University Program): You apply directly to a Chinese university authorized to recruit CSC scholars. The university reviews your application, conducts the interview, and nominates you to the CSC for final approval.

My Choice: Type B

I selected Type B because it allowed me to apply directly to the China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB), where I had already secured a supervisor. Applying through the university gave me more direct contact with the institution and the research group I wanted to join.

The Application Process

Step 1: Registering on Both Portals

I created accounts on two systems:

The university's online application portal — where I submitted all my documents to CUPB directly.

The CSC online application system — where I registered using CUPB's agency number and selected Program Category Type B.

Step 2: Submitting Documents on Both Portals

I submitted the same set of documents on both platforms

Step 3: First-Round Review and Shortlisting

After the submission deadline, the university conducted an initial review of all applications. Candidates who met the requirements and showed strong academic and research potential were shortlisted.

Step 4: Pre-Admission Letter

I was shortlisted and received a pre-admission letter from CUPB, confirming the university's interest in accepting me and nominating me to the CSC for the next stage.

Step 5: Interview

The next round was an interview. I was invited to appear before a panel, where I discussed my academic background, research plans, and motivation for pursuing the degree. Passing the interview was the final step in the university's evaluation.

Step 6: Admission and Scholarship Award

After successfully passing the interview, I received an official email confirming my admission and the award of the fully funded CSC scholarship.

How is Your Experience at China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB)?

My experience at CUPB has been excellent. The campus life is vibrant, and everything is very convenient. The people here are very kind, including the staff, teachers, and students.

The university has great facilities, including sports complexes. I really enjoy playing badminton, so I often play on the university courts with competitive players. I also go swimming, as the school has a very nice swimming pool facility. There are many places to get involved in sports.

The campus has many canteens offering a variety of food options, along with community stores, departmental stores, and coffee shops, making daily life easy and comfortable. There is also a big hospital on campus, so in case of any emergency, you can go there directly.

I have made great friends here, as there is a large community of international students from all parts of the world. The dorm is very nice too, with kitchens and laundry rooms, so it is easy to cook food at any time and wash your clothes.

Overall, the campus life is very nice, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here.

How Do You Rate China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB) Academically?

I would rate CUPB as the best institution in my field in China. It is one of China's top energy universities, consistently ranked No. 1 in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and recognized as a world-class discipline.

The university also leads globally through the Worldwide Energy University Network (WEUN), with its secretariat based at CUPB, reflecting its role as a leader in international energy education.

What makes CUPB exceptional is its direct connection to industry. Every academic year, China's top three energy giants, CNPC, SINOPEC, and CNOOC, along with other major companies, conduct campus recruitment here. The employment rate is very high, with unrivaled access to the global energy industry.

For anyone in my field, this combination of academic excellence and industry access makes CUPB the best possible choice.

How Does China University of Petroleum, Beijing (CUPB) Support International Students?

CUPB has a dedicated College of International Education that handles all matters related to international students. They provide strong support and take care of students' mental and physical health.

The college organizes various activities for international students to participate in, including academic and sports events. If a student has any kind of problem, they can communicate with the college at any time, and the staff will try their best to solve it.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Mandarin?

At CUPB, there are two types of programs: English-taught and Chinese-taught. I chose an English-taught program, so all of my classes and research work are conducted entirely in English.

What Did You Pursue After the Chinese Government Scholarship?

After completing my PhD, I plan to work in the industry. I want to join the energy sector and use the skills and research I have gained during my master's and PhD to solve real problems. I want to take what I have learned and use it to make a real difference in the field.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Mandarin?

It depends on the program. If a student chooses a Chinese-taught program, they must complete a language course in the first year of their degree, studying only Chinese. Once they pass the required language score, they officially start their degree program. After studying the language for one year, most students become fluent in Chinese and do not have any problems studying in Chinese.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

When I applied for my master's, the first thing I did was contact a potential supervisor. If the supervisor is willing to take you as their student, they will support your application, which is a big plus. But getting acceptance from a supervisor takes effort. You need to study their profile and research properly, see if their work aligns with yours, and then contact them via email. Mention their work and explain how you would be a good fit for their team.

Having a good GPA, participating in academic activities during your bachelor's, and writing a strong research proposal and study plan also help your application stand out. For me, my GPA and profile were strong, and I prepared every document exactly as required. The interview is also a crucial point. I think I made a great impression on the panel and secured their trust.

The same goes for my PhD. Having already studied here for my master's, I had built a strong profile. During the interview, I presented my research proposal, which is very important for a PhD. I presented and defended every question the panellists asked, which helped me gain their confidence, and with the support of my supervisor, I was awarded the scholarship again.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to future applicants is to start early and prepare carefully. First, contact a potential supervisor before applying, study their research, see if it aligns with your interests, and reach out with a thoughtful email. If they agree to support you, it makes a big difference. Prepare all your documents properly, including a strong study plan and research proposal, because these show the panel who you are. The interview is also crucial, so practice answering questions about your research and goals with confidence. Be patient, as the process takes time, and most importantly, believe in yourself. If you have worked hard and prepared well, you have a real chance.
