How I Secured a Fully Funded PhD at University College Dublin, Ireland Through the Marie Curie Doctoral Fellowship

My name is Suzan Bhadhury. I’m from Bangladesh. I’m currently pursuing my PhD in Biological and Environmental Science at University College Dublin, Ireland, under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network RootEd. Previously, I completed the Erasmus Mundus Master Program in Plant Breeding (emPLANT) from UniLaSalle, France; the University of Helsinki, Finland, and undertook a research internship at the University of Bonn, Germany.

MSCA Scholarship Details

I’m the recipient of the Marie Curie Doctoral Fellowship & Erasmus Mundus Scholarship, considered among the most prestigious scholarships in the world for pursuing PhD and Master’s degree programs. Both scholarships are fully funded and offered by the European Commission to global talents, covering tuition fees, living costs, and providing a mobility allowance for undertaking research or training anywhere in the world.

Educational Background

I completed my bachelor's degree in Agricultural Science from Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Bangladesh, with a CGPA of 3.81 on a scale of 4.00. I was awarded the Dean’s Award for my decent academic record. My intended field for higher studies was Plant Breeding, and my bachelor's degree curriculum perfectly aligned with the emPLANT master's degree requirements. Alongside my studies, I engaged in research and leadership activities. I believe academic excellence, research experience, and leadership skills altogether helped me to achieve the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship. Getting Erasmus was the most significant step towards my higher studies. While pursuing Erasmus, I had an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience from well-renowned research labs across Europe.

How Did You Find Information About MSCA fellowship RootEd? Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? How Did You Prepare for Them?

First, I found information about the MSCA fellowship RootEd on LinkedIn. Then I looked for specific project details on the EURAXESS website. I took the TOEFL test for the English proficiency requirement, although it was not a mandatory requirement, considering I already completed my master's in Europe with English as the medium of instruction. For preparation, I only used practice materials from the TOEFL® Test Official Website.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the MSCA scholarship?

I didn’t put specific effort into applying for the MSCA scholarship other than enriching my academic and research profile by gaining relevant experiences while pursuing my master's at European universities. But I took time to prepare a lucrative CV and a well-written motivation letter showcasing my experiences in the most relevant manner that satisfies doctoral project requirements.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Keep in mind that MSCA fellowships are extremely competitive; several hundred applicants will be competing for one position. The selection process is very fair, and the position will be offered to the best candidate. To be successful, an excellent academic record is highly important. Proven research skills, preferably in the form of scientific articles that are relevant to the project you are applying for, will help to stand out. Don’t generalise your motivation letter; instead, provide a clear picture of how your background and skills will help to achieve the project objectives. Don’t waste your time applying to many projects; select only those that are relevant to your expertise.
