How Did You Find Information About KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)?
I first learned about the KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship through a friend who was pursuing a master's degree in South Korea. After that, I explored the official KAIST website to understand the admission process, scholarship eligibility, and program details. Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
No, I did not take any standardized tests. KAIST exempts applicants from certain countries, including India, from submitting English proficiency test scores if their previous education was conducted entirely in English. Instead, applicants are required to submit an official Medium of Instruction certificate issued by their university confirming that English was the language of instruction.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship?
The KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship does not require a separate application, one just needs to check the box for KAIST scholarship in the primary application. All admitted students are automatically considered based on the overall strength of their application, with scholarship recommendations made by the prospective advisor to the department admission committee. Therefore, before submitting my application, I contacted my prospective advisor to discuss my academic background, professional experience, and research interests. I also prepared a well-structured statement of purpose that clearly articulated my motivation, research goals, and reasons for pursuing graduate studies at KAIST. Based on my academic credentials and financial circumstances, I requested the advisor to recommend me to the department's admissions committee for the scholarship, which he kindly agreed to do.
How is Your Experience at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST)?
My experience at KAIST has been extremely rewarding. The scholarship not only eased the financial burden of studying abroad but also gave me the opportunity to learn from world-class faculty, collaborate with talented researchers, and work on challenging research problems. Completing my master's degree at KAIST also opened the opportunity for me to continue my academic journey as a Ph.D. student.
How Do You Rate Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Academically?
I would rate KAIST very highly for its academic quality. The curriculum is rigorous, research-oriented, and encourages interdisciplinary collaboration. Students have access to excellent research facilities, experienced faculty, and opportunities to work on cutting-edge projects with real-world impact. Further, most of the international students receive a scholarship that waives tuition fees for the entire duration of study (MS / PhD).
How Does Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Support International Students?
KAIST provides a welcoming environment for international students. The university offers orientation programs, administrative support, counseling services, and peer mentoring to help students adapt to academic and cultural life in South Korea. There are also international faculty members and staff who can be approached for guidance on academic, personal, or cultural challenges.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Korean?
Almost all graduate courses are conducted entirely in English, including lectures, assignments, examinations, and course materials. Only a small number of courses specifically designed for domestic students are offered in Korean.
What Did You Pursue After the KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship?
After successfully completing my master's degree under the scholarship, I continued my academic journey by pursuing a Ph.D. at KAIST. My current research focuses on autonomous mobility systems, with an emphasis on computer vision and artificial intelligence for intelligent transportation.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Korean?
Although South Korea is not an English-speaking country, not knowing Korean does not present a significant academic challenge at KAIST. Since graduate courses and research activities are conducted in English, students can comfortably complete their studies. However, learning basic Korean is helpful for daily life and interacting with the local community outside the university.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it presented a balanced combination of academic achievement, professional experience, and research potential. I had consistently strong academic performance throughout school and undergraduate studies, along with more than five years of industry experience spanning transportation engineering, change management, data analytics, and technology consulting. In addition, my transportation-related research projects complemented my professional background and aligned well with the objectives of the Mobility program at KAIST.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I would have become involved in research earlier during my undergraduate studies. I would have sought opportunities to collaborate with faculty members and senior researchers, which could have strengthened my research profile and provided deeper exposure to academic research before applying for graduate school.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
The competition for international scholarships has increased significantly in recent years. Applicants should focus on building a strong overall research profile rather than relying solely on grades. Maintaining good academic performance, gaining research experience, and, if possible, publishing work in their area of interest can strengthen an application. Equally important is writing a clear and compelling statement of purpose that demonstrates genuine research interests, long-term goals, and why the chosen program is the right fit. Even without publications, a well-defined research direction and evidence of curiosity and commitment can make an application stand out.
