The Journey
I am Malak Najami, a Palestinian general dentist currently pursuing a clinical Master's in Dental Surgery at the University of Leeds. My passion for advancing dental care in underserved communities motivated me to specialize in Maxillofacial surgery, aiming to bridge gaps in healthcare access through expertise and innovation.
I am honored to have received two prestigious scholarships: the Chevening Scholarship, funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and the Said Foundation Scholarship.
Educational Background
I graduated as a general dentist from the Arab American University of Palestine, which provided a strong foundation in clinical practice and patient care. My academic rigor and hands-on experience in dental surgery prepared me to excel in a competitive international master’s program.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chevening Scholarship?
I identified programs aligned with my goals, focusing on faculty expertise and research opportunities at Leeds. I dedicated 3 months to preparing for the IELTS test, using online resources and practice tests to achieve my score.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
My application emphasized my unique perspective as a Palestinian dentist, my commitment to community health, and clear post-graduation plans to improve surgical care in the region. I highlighted leadership roles, volunteer work, and how the scholarships would amplify my impact.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would start earlier to refine my personal statement with more faculty feedback and apply to additional niche scholarships.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice is to
- Tailor each application to the scholarship’s mission
- Show, don’t just tell: Use specific examples of challenges overcome and how your work creates change.
- Network: Connect with past recipients for insights—their advice was invaluable.
Studying at Leeds
The program’s blend of advanced surgical training and research has exceeded my expectations. The multicultural environment and cutting-edge facilities have deepened my clinical skills while broadening my global perspective.
