The Journey

My name is Ibtessam Qureshi, and I am a 24-year-old student from Lahore, Pakistan. I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) at UVAS Business School, Lahore, Pakistan, from 2019 to 2023, graduating among the high achievers of my batch. I am currently pursuing a two-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Tianjin University, China, and expect to graduate in July 2027.

Studying abroad had always been a dream of mine. Whenever my teachers asked about my future plans, pursuing an international education was the answer I consistently gave. Although my undergraduate major was Marketing, internships across Human Resources, sales, and marketing, followed by professional experience in business development and Employee Relations, broadened my interests in business management. After gaining practical corporate experience in Pakistan, I felt ready to pursue an MBA that would expand my managerial knowledge, international exposure, and career opportunities.

Chinese Government Scholarship Details

I am a recipient of the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which supports my MBA studies at Tianjin University in Tianjin, China. My scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, and medical insurance, along with a monthly stipend of RMB 3,000 for master's students.

Educational Background

I completed my BBA with an overall score above 80% and received merit-based scholarships throughout my four undergraduate years. My academic experience provided a strong foundation in business and management, while my internships and subsequent professional roles helped me understand how business concepts operate in real organizational settings.

I was also inspired by my teachers, many of whom held master's or doctoral degrees earned abroad. Their academic experiences encouraged me to pursue international education. After gaining hands-on corporate experience in Pakistan, I decided that an MBA would be the right next step to strengthen my management skills and develop a broader global perspective.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Tianjin University?

I approached the process by researching universities systematically, considering their academic reputation, programme structure, and suitability for my goals. I also paid attention to the cities in which they were located. When choosing a country like China, it is important to consider not only the university but also the city's culture, lifestyle, and potential professional opportunities, since you will be living there for several years.

For English-taught programmes, applicants should carefully check each university's language requirements. In my application, I used proof that my previous degree had been taught in English rather than an IELTS or TOEFL score.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship?

I focused on understanding the scholarship requirements, preparing the necessary documents, and presenting my academic background and motivation clearly. I also took the interview process seriously. I prepared a presentation, organized my thoughts in advance, and practised explaining my goals and reasons for pursuing an MBA in China.

My advice is to treat every stage of the application as an opportunity to demonstrate not only your academic qualifications but also your commitment, confidence, and readiness to study internationally.

How is Your Experience at Tianjin University?

My experience at Tianjin University has been extremely rewarding, both academically and personally. The MBA programme combines classroom learning with practical exposure, including opportunities to learn about Chinese companies and business practices. As a business student, I particularly value seeing how management concepts are applied in real organizational settings.

Tianjin University also has a diverse international student community. The School of International Education (SIE) plays an important role in supporting international students through student activities, cultural engagement, and assistance with adjusting to university life.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Mandarin?

My MBA programme is taught in English, which allows me to focus on my academic studies while gradually developing my Chinese language skills. Chinese language courses are also part of the experience for many international students, helping them build basic communication skills for everyday life and cultural integration.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Mandarin?

Initially, the language barrier can be challenging. There are moments when you struggle to understand people or explain yourself, particularly in everyday situations outside the university.

My honest advice is to make a consistent effort to learn Chinese and practice with fellow students whenever possible. Even basic language skills can make daily life easier, help you become more independent, and create opportunities to connect with the local community.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is simple: do it for yourself. Pursuing an international scholarship requires time, effort, patience, and the courage to step outside your comfort zone. Choose a programme that genuinely aligns with your goals, research your options carefully, prepare your documents thoroughly, and do not let the fear of rejection stop you from applying.

Most importantly, believe that your goals are worth working towards. An international education can offer much more than a degree; it can help you become more independent, adaptable, and confident in your abilities.
