How I Secured a Fully Funded Master's at Arizona State University, United States Through the Fulbright Scholarship

My name is Florina Lutfiu, and I am from Prishtina, Kosovo. My academic and professional journey has been shaped by my interest in people, education, community development, organizational growth, and creating opportunities for others.

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Pedagogy from the University of Prishtina and a Master of Social Work in Policy, Administration, and Community Practice from Arizona State University (ASU) in the United States. I completed my Bachelor's degree with a GPA of 8.8/10 and my Master's degree with a 3.9/4.0 GPA.

Today, I work as a Senior Human Capital Development Specialist at KEP Trust, focusing on employee development, learning and development, engagement, internal communication, training, workshops, knowledge sharing, and organizational culture.

My Fulbright Scholarship

I was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship by the U.S. Embassy in Kosovo, which enabled me to pursue my Master's degree at Arizona State University.

The Fulbright experience was a major milestone in my academic and professional journey. It gave me the opportunity to study in the United States, experience a different academic environment, and develop an international perspective that continues to influence my career.

The Master's program combined social work with policy, administration, community practice, research, and program evaluation. My coursework included areas such as Program Evaluation, Social Work Policy, Community Participation Strategies, Research Methods, Macro Social Work Practice, and Diversity and Oppression.

This combination helped me develop a broader understanding of how people, organizations, communities, and policies interact.

Another Scholarship Opportunity

I was also offered the USAID Transformational Leadership Program – Scholarships and Partnerships (TLP) 2016 Master's Degree Program.

I ultimately chose Fulbright. Having more than one opportunity allowed me to compare the programs and choose the one that best matched my academic and professional goals.

My advice to future applicants is to apply for multiple scholarships rather than relying on a single opportunity.

My Academic Background

I completed my Bachelor's degree in Social Pedagogy at the University of Prishtina, graduating with a GPA of 8.8/10. My undergraduate education provided a strong foundation in understanding people, education, communication, and social issues.

At Arizona State University, I expanded this foundation through graduate-level study in policy, administration, community practice, research, and program evaluation. I completed 60 graduate credits with a 3.90/4.00 cumulative GPA, with most courses receiving A or A- grades.

The Master's degree helped me strengthen my analytical, research, communication, program development, evaluation, and stakeholder-management skills—skills that later became highly transferable to my career in human resources and organizational development.

How I Prepared for the Application

I started by identifying what I wanted to achieve through graduate education and what areas I wanted to develop further.

I researched universities and programs, reviewed their academic offerings and admission requirements, and considered how each program aligned with my long-term goals.

For the scholarship application, I focused not only on my academic achievements but also on who I was, what I wanted to achieve, and why further education mattered to me.

I tried to create a clear connection between my education, professional and community experiences, interests, and future goals. I also focused on being authentic rather than trying to write what I thought the selection committee wanted to hear.

I took the TOEFL as part of my preparation for studying in an English-speaking academic environment. Studying in English later strengthened my confidence in academic writing, presentations, discussions, and professional communication.

My Experience at Arizona State University

My experience at Arizona State University was one of the most important periods of my personal and professional development.

Studying in the United States exposed me to a different academic system and people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. As an international student, I became more independent, adaptable, and confident in communicating across different perspectives.

The program was particularly valuable because it connected academic knowledge with practical applications in policy, administration, community development, social services, research, and evaluation.

My classes were conducted in English. Although academic writing and presentations initially required additional preparation, the experience significantly strengthened my English communication skills.

I also learned that international education is about more than the classroom. The people you meet, the environment you experience, and the challenges you overcome are an important part of the learning process.

What I Did After the Scholarship

After completing my Master's degree, my career gradually evolved toward human resources, talent development, learning, career development, and organizational development.

At Moneta MoneyGram, I worked in Talent Acquisition & Development, supporting recruitment, new employee orientation, and talent programs.

I later worked at Universum College, where I coordinated the Career and Welfare Office, supported student employability and networking, collaborated with organizations, and contributed to career-related learning.

From 2021 to 2025, I worked at Raiffeisen Bank Kosovo, where my responsibilities expanded into strategic HR, talent acquisition, capacity planning, training needs analysis, HR analytics, employer branding, employee engagement, onboarding, and performance management.

During this period, I also designed the RISE – Raiffeisen Internship and Scholarship for Engineers program. The initiative combined scholarship support, practical experience, mentoring, training, and career opportunities for young technology talent.

The program was designed to help bridge the gap between university and employment, giving students practical experience while learning from professionals.

Today, at KEP Trust, I continue working in the broader field of people and organizational development through learning initiatives, employee engagement, training, workshops, communication, and organizational culture.

Looking back, I see a strong connection between my education, the Fulbright experience, and my career. My Master's degree gave me a broader understanding of people, organizations, policy, administration, and community development, while my professional experience allowed me to translate that knowledge into practical initiatives.

One of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been moving from being a beneficiary of an educational opportunity to creating opportunities for others.

What Made My Application Stand Out?

I believe my application combined several important elements:

• Social Pedagogy background – My background in Social Pedagogy, an emerging field in Kosovo at the time, helped differentiate my application from other candidates
• Practical experience – internships, projects, professional work, and community involvement.
• Clear motivation – a genuine reason for pursuing graduate education.
• Future goals – a clear connection between my education and the contribution I wanted to make afterward.
• Authenticity – presenting my actual experiences and interests rather than trying to fit a particular image.

I don't believe scholarships are only about grades. Academic performance is important, but so are motivation, experience, leadership potential, adaptability, community involvement, and having a clear sense of purpose.

What Would I Do Differently?

If I were applying again, I would start even earlier.

I would dedicate more time to researching universities and scholarship opportunities, preparing documents, taking language tests, writing and revising application essays, and asking others for feedback.

My experience also taught me the importance of applying for multiple scholarships. Having both Fulbright and the USAID TLP opportunity gave me the ability to make a more informed decision.

My advice to future applicants is to start early, know your story and goals, be authentic, and look beyond grades by highlighting your experience, motivation, and leadership. Apply for multiple opportunities, research thoroughly, seek feedback, and don’t be discouraged by rejection. A scholarship is more than financial support—it is an opportunity to learn, grow, and gain perspectives that can create long-term impact. For me, Fulbright became much more than a Master’s degree; it broadened my perspective and continues to influence my career.
