The Journey

My name is Faith Mbonongo Banda, and I am from Malawi. I was born in Zomba and raised in Blantyre. From a young age, I was passionate about science, innovation, and solving practical challenges affecting communities. This passion led me to pursue a degree in Sustainable Energy Systems at Malawi University of Science and Technology.

I decided to further my education because I wanted to contribute to Malawi’s energy transition and help develop sustainable energy solutions that can improve livelihoods, especially in rural communities. My long-term goal is to contribute to renewable energy research, climate resilience, and sustainable development in Africa.

Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship Details

I was also awarded the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship in 2022 to pursue my MSc in Sustainable Engineering: Renewable Energy Systems and the Environment at the University of Strathclyde, where I graduated with Distinction.

I was also awarded a fellowship by the Schlumberger faculty for a tenable future at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom.

I am currently doing PhD studies in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, specializing in Renewable Energy.

University of Strathclyde – Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship (Full Scholarship including tuition, stipend, and travel support).ESCOM Scholarship during my undergraduate studies at Malawi University of Science and Technology. My undergraduate education was also fully sponsored by Standard Bank Malawi from the first year to the fourth year.

Educational Background

I completed my secondary education at Chichiri Secondary School. I later joined the Malawi University of Science and Technology through the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), where I studied a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Energy Systems and graduated with Distinction in 2022.

After that, I pursued an MSc in Sustainable Engineering: Renewable Energy Systems and the Environment at the University of Strathclyde and graduated with Distinction in 2023.

My academic background prepared me strongly for research and engineering because it combined technical training, analytical thinking, sustainability studies, and practical industry exposure. Throughout my studies, I also developed strong research, data analysis, technical writing, and project management skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Strathclyde?

I started preparing early by researching universities that had strong renewable energy and sustainability research programs. I focused on institutions that aligned with my research interests in renewable energy systems, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

I also worked on building my academic profile through research, leadership, internships, and professional experience. During my undergraduate and master’s studies, I actively participated in engineering projects, research activities, and internships, including working with ESCOM and later with National Grid UK.

I found information through university websites, LinkedIn, scholarship platforms, academic mentors, and networking with former scholarship recipients. I also regularly searched for opportunities related to renewable energy, sustainability, and engineering research. Guidance from mentors played an important role in helping me identify suitable opportunities.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I did not take the GRE or GMAT examinations. However, I prepared all the required application documents carefully, including my research interests, academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and personal statements. I also ensured that my academic and professional experiences clearly aligned with the goals of the scholarship and institution.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship?

Preparation required consistency and planning. I spent time refining my personal statement, research interests, and CV. I made sure my application clearly communicated my passion for renewable energy, my research goals, and how I intended to contribute to Malawi and Africa after my studies.
