Taiwan ICDF Scholarship Scholar Déja John from Saint Lucia Shares Their Journey of Securing a Fully Funded Bachelor's at the Ming Chuan University, Taiwan

I am Déja John, hailing from the beautiful island of Saint Lucia, the only country in the world named after a woman. From 2011 to 2015, I had the incredible opportunity to study in Taiwan as a recipient of the Taiwan ICDF Scholarship. I pursued a Bachelor’s degree in International Trade and Business Management at Ming Chuan University in Taipei. At the time, I was drawn to the creative side of commerce and viewed the prospect of learning business within a completely different culture and language as the ultimate adventure.

Educational Background

My foundation in business began in high school, after which I attended the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. There, I successfully completed an Associate degree in Business Administration, which prepared me for the rigors of international business study.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Ming Chuan University?

I first learned about this opportunity through a friend. It is important for applicants to note that Taiwan offers two primary tracks: the MOFA and the ICDF scholarships. At the time, the ICDF scholarship allowed students to dive straight into their degree programs at their chosen university without the mandatory year of Mandarin language study required by MOFA. Since my program was primarily taught in English, it offered a smoother academic transition, though it presented its own unique set of cultural pros and cons.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Taiwan ICDF Scholarship?

I began by researching the specific requirements for both the scholarship and the university. I also attended an informative session hosted by the government, which I highly recommend to any prospective applicant. Back then, pre-qualifying exams weren't required, but I did undergo an interview that felt more like a "get to know you" conversation than a formal interrogation. Today, there are even more resources available, such as introductory Mandarin classes, which are incredibly helpful for navigating daily life in Taiwan.

How is Your Experience at Ming Chuan University?

Like any university journey, it came with its share of challenges, particularly navigating different communication styles and the language barrier. However, the ICDF program assigns a dedicated Program Manager to each student. Having that direct support made resolving any issues much smoother. While the stipend required careful budgeting back then, regulations have since evolved to allow students to work part-time. This is a great improvement, as it allows current students to enhance their standard of living while gaining valuable local work experience.

How Do You Rate Ming Chuan University Academically?

Ming Chuan has consistently evolved; they now offer the option to minor in a secondary subject, which is an opportunity I wish I’d had! While there were a few "growing pains" during my tenure, as the program was relatively new, the administration was always proactive. The professors were highly professional, experts in their fields, and always went the extra mile to support international students.

How Does Ming Chuan University Support International Students?

The university offers a wide range of English-taught majors and minors, allowing international students to focus on their studies without the immediate stress of a language barrier. They also have a dedicated International Student Center for administrative or personal assistance and provide on-campus dormitories, which significantly helps in managing housing costs in Taipei.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it showed I was a well-rounded individual. At the time, I was working as a teacher while remaining active in an environmental club. I had also completed diverse internships in both banking and hospitality, and I balanced my professional life with creative outlets like yoga and modeling. This blend of community involvement and professional versatility made me a strong candidate.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Honestly, I wouldn't change a thing. The entire experience, from the academic rigors to the immersion in Taiwanese culture, had a profoundly positive impact on my life and shaped who I am today.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

While academic excellence is vital, don't forget to showcase your life outside of the classroom. Be active in your community and pursue your hobbies or talents with passion. Additionally, demonstrating a genuine awareness of the host country's culture and language will significantly boost your chances. They aren't just looking for students; they are looking for ambassadors.
