The Journey
My name is Chay Chanpanha, and I am from Cambodia. My educational journey has taken me across Southeast Asia and East Asia, where I have had the opportunity to pursue higher education through two full-ride scholarships: one for my bachelor's degree at Thammasat University in Thailand and another for my master's degree through the Chinese Government Scholarship in China.
Coming from Cambodia, I have always viewed education as an important way to broaden my perspective, develop my skills, and contribute to my country's development. Studying abroad allowed me to experience different cultures, learn from diverse academic environments, and better understand regional and international issues.
Receiving scholarships for both degrees has been an important part of my academic journey and has shown me how scholarship opportunities can make international education accessible to students from different backgrounds.

Master's degree

Receiving these two scholarships gave me the opportunity to pursue higher education internationally without having to bear the full financial burden myself.
Educational Background
My academic journey has included studying in different educational environments, beginning with my undergraduate studies at Thammasat University in Thailand and continuing with my master's studies in China. My bachelor's degree helped me build a foundation in economics, while also developing my ability to think critically, conduct research, communicate across cultures, and adapt to new academic challenges. My decision to pursue a master's degree was motivated by my desire to deepen my knowledge and develop a stronger understanding of economics in China. Studying in China has also given me the opportunity to learn more about the region's economic development, international cooperation, and global engagement. My academic background prepared me for these opportunities by helping me develop both subject-specific knowledge and the independence needed to study abroad.
- Undergraduate degree: Bachelor of Economics, Minor in Finance, Field of Quantitative Economics
- Undergraduate GPA: 3.5 (First Class Honors)
- Master's degree: Master of World Economics
- Master's GPA or current academic standing: 3.8
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Thammasat University & University of International Business and Economics?
I approached studying abroad as a process that required research, preparation, and careful consideration. Rather than looking only at the reputation of a university, I also considered whether its academic programs aligned with my interests and long-term goals. I looked for opportunities that would allow me to pursue my education while reducing the financial barriers associated with studying overseas. Receiving a full-ride scholarship was particularly important because it made these opportunities more accessible.
How Did You Find Information About Academic Excellence Scholarship and Thammasat University & University of International Business and Economics?
I researched universities and scholarship opportunities through the news that the Ministry of Education posted on the internet. I learned that it is important to distinguish between general university admission and scholarship applications because the eligibility requirements, deadlines, and required documents may differ. I would encourage prospective applicants to start with official sources and verify the scholarship requirements carefully instead of relying exclusively on social media posts or information shared by other applicants.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
For English, I used the English Certificate from my bachelor's degree (showing that the whole bachelor's courses are conducted in English). My preparation also involved understanding the admission requirements of the programs I was interested in and making sure I could meet the academic and language requirements before applying.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Academic Excellence Scholarship?
My approach was to understand the requirements of each scholarship and prepare the necessary application materials carefully. I focused on presenting my academic background, educational goals, and reasons for wanting to study internationally. I believe an application should explain not only why a student wants to receive a scholarship but also how the opportunity fits into their broader academic and professional plans. I would recommend paying particular attention to application instructions, supporting documents, personal statements, academic transcripts, recommendation letters (from an associate professor or prof is preferred), and language requirements, where applicable. It is also important to allow enough time to prepare documents and review the application before submitting it. Small administrative mistakes can be avoided through careful planning.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe one important aspect of my journey is my commitment to continuing my education despite the financial challenges that can come with studying abroad. Receiving full-ride scholarships for both my bachelor's and master's degrees reflects my willingness to pursue opportunities beyond my home country and adapt to different academic environments. My experience studying in Thailand and China has also helped me develop a broader regional perspective. As a Cambodian student, studying in these two countries has allowed me to experience different cultures and educational systems while strengthening my understanding of international and regional cooperation. Ultimately, I believe applicants should present an authentic picture of who they are, what motivates them, and how the scholarship will help them achieve their goals rather than trying to present themselves as perfect candidates.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Looking back, I would have tried to learn more about scholarship opportunities and application requirements even earlier. Starting early can give applicants more time to compare universities, prepare supporting documents, strengthen their language skills, and develop a clear explanation of their academic goals. I would also encourage applicants to keep a record of application deadlines and requirements. Applying for scholarships can involve several administrative steps, and being organized makes the process much easier. Most importantly, I would remind myself not to be discouraged by uncertainty. Scholarship applications can be competitive, and applicants may not always know what selection committees are looking for. The best approach is to prepare thoroughly and make the most of the opportunities available.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My biggest advice is to not rule yourself out before applying. As a Cambodian student who received full-ride scholarships for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I hope my experience encourages other students to explore opportunities they may not have considered possible.
Here are a few practical suggestions:
1. Start researching early. Look for scholarships through official university websites and government scholarship portals, and keep track of deadlines.
2. Understand the scholarship requirements. Different scholarships have different eligibility criteria, coverage, and application procedures.
3. Prepare your documents carefully. Academic transcripts, recommendation letters, personal statements, and other supporting documents should be accurate and complete.
4. Explain your motivation clearly. Be specific about why you chose the program, why you want to study in that country, and how the education relates to your future goals.
5. Be authentic. Your personal background, experiences, and motivations can help distinguish your application. You do not need to imitate someone else's story.
6. Stay open to different destinations. My own journey took me from Cambodia to Thailand and then to China. Exploring different countries and institutions can reveal opportunities you might otherwise miss.
7. Do not give up after one application. Scholarship opportunities are competitive, but careful preparation and persistence can help you find a suitable path.
Finally, remember that you do not necessarily need to come from a wealthy background to pursue an international education. Full scholarships exist, and researching them carefully can be the first step toward making your goals achievable.
A Final Reflection
Receiving a full-ride scholarship for my bachelor's degree at Thammasat University and later for my master's degree through the Chinese Government Scholarship has been a meaningful part of my educational journey. Beyond financial support, these opportunities have allowed me to learn in different countries, experience new cultures, and develop a broader perspective on education and international cooperation. I hope sharing my experience will encourage other Cambodian students and prospective international applicants to explore scholarship opportunities, prepare their applications carefully, and remain confident in their potential.
