The Journey

My name is Bernard Atarigiya, and I am from Ghana. I currently work as a Forest Range Manager for the Ghana Forestry Commission. My professional career has focused on sustainable forest management, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement in forest resource management. In addition, I am a Commonwealth Scholar studying for an MSc in Tropical Forestry at Bangor University in Wales, United Kingdom. I decided to pursue further education in Tropical Forestry because forests play a critical role in addressing climate change, conserving biodiversity, and supporting rural livelihoods. As a forestry professional working in Ghana, I wanted to strengthen my technical and research skills to contribute more effectively to sustainable forest management and climate change adaptation initiatives.

Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship Details

To pursue my MSc in Tropical Forestry at Bangor University in the United Kingdom, I was awarded the Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship. The scholarship covers everything (Tuition, stipend, Tropical study tour abroad).

Educational Background

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in Natural Resource Management from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). I have a solid background in forest ecology, silviculture, forest management, conservation, and natural resource governance thanks to my academic training. These areas of study prepared me well for advanced studies in Tropical Forestry by equipping me with both theoretical knowledge and practical field experience. In addition to my academic qualifications, my work experience with The Forestry Commission exposed me to the practical issues that local populations and tropical forests face. This combination of academic and professional experience strengthened my application and demonstrated my commitment to the forestry sector.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Bangor University?

A friend of mine sent me a link to the school. That was how it all started. So, I began looking through the courses provided by the university and finally decided on my choice after I thoroughly reviewed program curriculum, faculty qualifications, and research prospects. I didn’t take any special tests.

I carefully reviewed the scholarship requirements and made certain that every aspect of my application clearly reflected my academic accomplishments, professional experience, leadership potential, and dedication to Ghana's development. I spent considerable time refining my personal statement and explaining how the MSc in Tropical Forestry would help me address practical challenges in sustainable forest management and climate change adaptation. I also highlighted my work with the Forestry Commission and explained how the program's knowledge would help both my organization and Ghana's forestry sector.
