The Journey
My name is Arnab Bhowmik, and I am from India. I am currently pursuing a PhD in Germany under the DAAD–DLR scholarship program in German Aerospace Centre. My academic background includes an MSc in Research in Computer and Systems Engineering at TU Ilmenau. My research interests lie at the intersection of Earth Observation, remote sensing, computer vision, and explainable artificial intelligence. I decided to pursue further education in this field because I wanted to work on research that combines advanced computational methods with real-world environmental and societal applications.
DAAD–DLR Scholarship Details
I received the DAAD–DLR scholarship in Germany for my doctoral research. The scholarship supports my PhD work in collaboration with the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The scholarship amount is €1,750 per month.
Educational Background
My previous degree is an MSc in Research in Computer and Systems Engineering. This background prepared me well for interdisciplinary research because it gave me strong foundations in computation, data analysis, systems thinking, and research methodology. It also helped me build the technical and analytical skills needed for working in remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and Earth Observation research. I am not including GPA here.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the German Aerospace Center (DLR)?
I prepared by identifying institutions and research groups whose work closely matched my research interests. I carefully studied the research themes, the profiles of potential supervisors, and the scope of the available projects. I also worked on improving my CV, refining my statement of purpose, and presenting my research interests clearly and consistently.
How Did You Find Information About the DAAD–DLR Scholarship and German Aerospace Center (DLR)?
I found information through institutional professors, DAAD resources, and DLR research groups. I focused especially on official sources because they gave the clearest picture of the scholarship requirements, the host institution, and the nature of the research opportunity.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
For my application route, standardized test scores were not the main deciding factor. The stronger emphasis was on academic background, research alignment, publications, application documents, and fit with the host institution and research environment.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD–DLR Scholarship?
I prepared by making sure that all parts of my application told one clear story: my academic preparation, my research interests, my motivation for doctoral study, and why I was a good fit for the DAAD–DLR opportunity. I paid particular attention to my CV, motivation, and the clarity with which I explained my research direction.
How is Your Experience at the German Aerospace Center (DLR)?
My experience has been academically enriching and professionally valuable. Being part of a strong research environment in Germany has helped me grow as an independent researcher and has given me exposure to high-quality scientific work, collaboration, and an international research culture.
How Do You Rate the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Academically?
I would rate the institution very highly academically because of its strong research environment, the seriousness with which scientific work is approached, and the opportunity to work on meaningful research problems with real-world relevance.
How Does the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Support International Students?
The institution provides a strong academic environment and access to research resources. Like many international students and scholars in Germany, I also found that being organized and proactive helps a lot when dealing with onboarding, administration, and settling into a new academic system.
Is the Institution That You Are Studying at Free for Your Subject? If You Had to Pay Semester Fees, How Much Was It?
My doctoral research is supported through the scholarship, which is the main financial support structure in my case. Compared with many other countries, higher education and research pathways in Germany are generally much more affordable.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?
My research and academic work are conducted primarily in English.
What Did You Pursue After the DAAD–DLR Scholarship?
I am currently pursuing my PhD research.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing German?
Academically, it is possible to work successfully in an English-speaking research environment without being fluent in German. However, for everyday life, administration, and social integration, knowing some German is definitely helpful.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it showed a clear research direction, strong alignment with the opportunity, and a coherent connection between my academic background, technical skills, and long-term research goals.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were going through the process again, I would start even earlier and organize documents, deadlines, and administrative steps more systematically from the beginning.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice would be to focus on genuine research, prepare your documents carefully, and make sure your application tells a clear and honest story about who you are, what you want to work on, and why you are a strong match for the opportunity. Starting early and relying on official information sources also makes a big difference.
