The Journey

My name is Anparasy, and I am originally from Sri Lanka. I have a strong passion for artificial intelligence, particularly in imaging-related fields. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Alberta.

I chose to specialize in AI, especially imaging and analysis techniques, because of my background in computer science and the growing importance of AI across various domains. I also gained research experience during my undergraduate studies, which further motivated me to pursue this field.

At each stage of my academic journey, I have continued to strengthen my expertise in AI. I am eager to deepen my knowledge further and become an expert in this area.

Graduate Research Assistantship Fellowship Details

Throughout my academic journey, I have been fortunate to receive multiple scholarships that have supported my studies.

I was awarded a Graduate Research Assistantship Fellowship at the University of Alberta (Canada), which fully funds my PhD by covering tuition fees and providing a monthly stipend. I chose this opportunity because of the strength of the research program and its strong alignment with my career goals. In addition, I have applied for multiple other scholarships offered by the University of Alberta to further support my academic and research activities.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes. In addition to my current funding, I was offered and/or considered for other scholarships at the University of Alberta (Canada). Some of these were incorporated into my overall funding package, while others were additional opportunities:

Educational Background

  • Graduate Recruitment Scholarship - University of Alberta (CAD 10,000)
  • Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship - University of Alberta (CAD 12,000)
  • Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship - University of Alberta / Alberta Innovates (CAD 31,000/year)

I believe my educational background has provided a strong foundation for the work I am pursuing today. I completed my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science at the University of Jaffna in Sri Lanka, graduating with a first-class overall GPA of 3.99 out of 4.00.

Driven by a desire to deepen my expertise in the field of AI, I went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Medical Sciences (Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry - Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging) at the University of Alberta, Canada. Within my first six months, I was fast-tracked into the PhD program. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta.

My research focuses on the application of AI in medical imaging tasks, including medical image analysis, enhancement, segmentation, and quantitative image quality assessment.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

The process was much more challenging and required a proactive approach. I searched for professors whose research aligned with my interests, carefully looked at their published work, and identified whether they had ongoing funded projects and were open to accepting new PhD students. The most demanding part was reaching out and getting cold emails. I prepared personalized emails introducing myself, outlining my research interests and publications, and inquiring about available PhD positions. Through this process, I was able to secure a Graduate Research Assistantship Fellowship along with additional scholarship opportunities, which I am now using to pursue my PhD studies at the University of Alberta.

As a student from Sri Lanka, I was required to demonstrate English language proficiency to study in Canada. I took the IELTS exam and submitted my scores as part of the application. The process also involved completing an online application, submitting all required documents, and undergoing departmental evaluation.

To prepare for the IELTS, I used a combination of practice tests, language courses, and immersive English exposure. I focused on achieving a score above the minimum requirement to strengthen my application and ensure eligibility.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Graduate Research Assistantship Fellowship?

I prepared a strong application supported by a well-developed research proposal that outlined clear and innovative project ideas. The proposal focused on addressing key challenges in the field. I ensured that the proposed work was both technically rigorous and clinically relevant, highlighting how advanced methods could be applied to real-world biomedical imaging problems.

In addition, I aligned the proposal with current research gaps and future directions in the field, emphasizing novelty, feasibility, and potential clinical impact. This was complemented by strong personal statements, letters of recommendation, academic transcripts, and evidence of research experience, including publications and ongoing projects, all of which strengthened my overall application.

How is Your Experience at the University of Alberta?

My experience has been both enriching and transformative. Studying at a Canadian university has exposed me to diverse perspectives, strong academic rigor, and valuable opportunities to collaborate with leading experts in the field. The multicultural environment has further helped me develop my communication, teamwork, and leadership skills, while broadening my academic and professional outlook.

How Do You Rate the University of Alberta Academically?

I would rate the institution very highly due to its strong research environment, excellent faculty, and rigorous, well-structured programs. It provides advanced facilities, strong supervision, and a research-driven culture that supports high-quality academic and professional development.

How Does the University of Alberta Support International Students?

The institution supports international students through dedicated services such as international student offices that assist with admissions, visas, orientation, and settlement support. Academic resources include supervisors, advisors, writing centres, and research training to help students succeed.

In addition, career services and mental health resources are available. The institution also promotes integration through student associations, cultural activities, and networking opportunities.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or the Country's Native Language?

All classes were conducted entirely in English, which provided a consistent and inclusive learning environment for both domestic and international students.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing the Native Language?

Not applicable, as all instructions were delivered in English.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe it was a combination of several factors. First, I invested significant time and effort into preparing each application carefully and thoughtfully. My strong academic background, graduating with First Class Honours and a high GPA in my undergraduate studies, formed a solid foundation. This was further strengthened by my practical experience, including an internship at KPMG, as well as academic roles such as Instructor, Assistant Lecturer, and Lecturer (probationary).

In addition, my research experience, including publications and supervising and mentoring students in their research work, helped demonstrate my capability and commitment to academia. My clearly defined research focus in my field also made my applications more compelling and aligned with the goals of the scholarships.

At the same time, I recognize that there is also an element of competitiveness and opportunity involved. These scholarships attract many highly qualified applicants, so it is difficult to say with certainty what specific factor made my applications stand out. Overall, I would say it was a combination of preparation, experience, alignment of interests, and possibly a bit of luck.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process again, I would start my scholarship search and application preparation much earlier, allowing more time to identify suitable opportunities and tailor my applications effectively. I would also focus on building a stronger network of alumni and mentors to seek guidance and insights throughout the process.

In addition, I would aim to publish research earlier in my academic journey to further strengthen my academic profile. Rather than applying broadly, I would concentrate on preparing a smaller number of strong, well-crafted applications with greater attention to detail and alignment.

Most importantly, I would learn to trust the process more, putting in my best effort, staying consistent, and then accepting the outcome with patience and faith.
