The Journey

My name is Anastasiia Kulyani. I am originally from Mariupol, Ukraine, and I moved to Germany alone at the age of 17. Since 2020, I have been building my life and education here independently. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at TU Dortmund University and am currently pursuing my Master’s at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts. My main interests are in statistics, artificial intelligence, software development, and software architecture. Before coming to Germany, I was awarded a scholarship from the President of Ukraine, won the All-Ukrainian German Olympiad in 2019, and actively participated in MINT programs, academic competitions, and the Junior Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. These experiences shaped my mindset early on. They taught me to aim higher, to compete, and to achieve more.

Receiving the DAAD scholarship became a turning point in my life. It opened the door to studying in Germany and completely changed my path. Since 2022, I have been working in the IT field alongside my studies, gaining real-world experience. This opportunity not only supported my education but also helped me become who I am today.

DAAD Scholarship Details

I was awarded the DAAD Scholarship (Stipendienprogramm deutsche Auslandsschulen, 2020). The scholarship was granted for my studies in Germany, with TU Dortmund University as the host institution.

The funding period was from October 1, 2020, to September 30, 2023. The scholarship included a monthly stipend of 750 EUR, along with additional financial support such as a study allowance of 460 EUR per year and a one-time travel allowance of 525 EUR. It also covered health, accident, and liability insurance.

This scholarship was part of the DAAD program for graduates of German schools abroad (PASCH initiative), which supported my transition from the Mariupol City Lyceum to higher education in Germany.

Were You Offered Other Scholarships

In addition to the DAAD scholarship, I was awarded the Presidential Scholarship of Ukraine in 2019 for winning the IV stage of the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiad. The scholarship, granted by the Government of Ukraine, provided a stipend for one year and recognized academic excellence at the national level. While I do not recall the exact amount I received, comparable awards today are around UAH 20,000 in total (approximately €450 - €500).

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Applied Computer Science at TU Dortmund University, graduating with a final grade of 2.3 (ECTS grade B). During my studies, I built a solid foundation in core computer science disciplines, including data structures and algorithms, software engineering, operating systems, distributed systems, and computer networks. I also completed advanced coursework in mathematics, probability theory, and statistics, which strengthened my analytical skills. Additionally, I gained practical experience through software projects, seminars, and my final Bachelor's thesis.

Prior to that, I studied at the Mariupol City Lyceum with a specialization in mathematics and computer science, where I actively participated in Olympiads, research competitions, and MINT programs.

Currently, I am in my 4th semester of my Master’s degree at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, with a current grade of 1.4 (German grading system). My studies are strongly practice-oriented and include numerous group projects in areas such as advanced statistics, machine learning, web engineering, software architecture, usability engineering, real-time systems, and requirements engineering. Alongside my studies, I have been working in the IT field since 2022, applying what I learn directly in real-world projects and continuously meeting like-minded people.

My educational background prepared me for this field through a strong combination of academic training, active participation in study life, volunteer work, and personal interests, all of which have shaped not only my technical skills but also my personality.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to TU Dortmund?

Most of the information about studying in Germany and available scholarships was provided directly by my Mariupol City Lyceum, which is part of the PASCH initiative. Through the school, I learned about opportunities such as studying in Germany and specific programs supporting international students.

I had the opportunity to visit Germany several times before applying, through student exchanges and workshops. These experiences had a strong impact on me and motivated me to set a clear goal: to pursue my higher education in Germany. At that time, this goal felt very ambitious, as there were many talented students, but I was determined to achieve it.

A key step in my preparation was participating in the Studienbrücke program, which supports students from abroad in transitioning directly from school to university in Germany without attending a Studienkolleg. The program is specifically designed for students with strong backgrounds in MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, and technology) and prepares them both linguistically and academically for studying in Germany.

It included German language courses up to B2 level, subject-specific preparation in MINT fields, and individual study guidance provided by DAAD. In addition, the program offered structured preparation for the required standardized tests, including TestDaF preparation courses and TestAS training, as well as the opportunity to take these exams. This comprehensive support played a crucial role in my application process and helped me successfully transition into the German higher education system.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the DAAD Scholarship?

A major part of the preparation was compiling all required application documents, including my CV, motivation letter, academic transcripts, language certificates, study program information, and records of my achievements and extracurricular activities.

At the same time, I prepared for the required standardized tests, TestDaF (German language proficiency) and TestAS (academic aptitude test). I studied for TestDaF with a German teacher through regular lessons several times per week and prepared for TestAS using specialized materials with support from my parents.

Overall, the process combined intensive exam preparation with the effort of building a complete and strong application, which was essential for successfully applying to the scholarship.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out due to a combination of strong academic performance, national-level achievements, and a clear, consistent path toward studying in Germany. In addition, my participation in the Studienbrücke program, prior stays in Germany through exchanges and workshops, and well-prepared results in TestDaF and TestAS showed both my readiness and commitment.

At the same time, I presented myself not only through academic results, but also as a well-rounded person with hobbies and broader interests. I clearly articulated my goals, why I chose Germany, and specifically why this university and study program fit my interests and long-term plans.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would plan the timeline more carefully and pay closer attention to deadlines. I would also take into account in advance that documents often need to be officially translated and certified, which can take time and should not be left until the last moment.

In addition, I would make sure to systematically save and organize all certificates and diplomas I received during school and extracurricular activities, as these can be important supporting documents in the application process.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

  • Be consistent: show a clear direction, real interest in your field, and a well-thought-out reason for choosing your university and study program.
  • Be yourself and tell your story: what shaped you, what motivates you, and where you want to go.
  • Don’t try to write what you think they want to hear. Authenticity and clarity matter more.
  • And most importantly: apply even if you doubt yourself. Many opportunities seem out of reach until you try. Sometimes the difference is not talent, but the courage to take the step and believe that you belong there.
