The Journey

Earning a scholarship like the GOI IES is not just about the financial support, but also a massive validation of your vision. Hello everyone! My name is Akash Martin, and I am originally from Trivandrum, India. I am currently pursuing a Master of Engineering Science in Sustainable Energy at University College Cork. My core drive has always been to bridge the gap between technical engineering and commercial management. I wanted to dive deeply into the actual mechanics of clean energy transitions and grid-scale storage. The MEngSc at UCC offered exactly the foundation I needed. Being supported by the Government of Ireland to explore how we build resilient, sustainable infrastructure has been the ultimate privilege.

Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship Details

I am deeply honored to be a recipient of the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship. It covers my full tuition fee of €28,000 at UCC and provides a stipend of €10,000 for living expenses. Knowing that only 60 students globally are selected for this award fills me with immense gratitude and a strong sense of responsibility to make a real impact in the energy sector.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

N/A. I focused all my efforts entirely on this specific opportunity.

Educational Background

My academic path has been built step by step to connect different disciplines. I began with a B.Tech in Chemical Engineering at Kerala University, graduating with Distinction and an 8.2/10 CGPA. Wanting to specialize further, I pursued an M.Tech in Mineral Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (ISM) Dhanbad, where I graduated as the cohort topper with a 9.01/10 CGPA and received the institute's Gold Medal. During my time at IIT, I also served as a Senator in the Student Gymkhana. That leadership role really pushed me out of my academic bubble and taught me how to advocate for my peers and collaborate with institutional leadership.

However, I soon realized that solving modern energy challenges requires more than just technical knowledge. This led me to complete a Master’s in management (Grande École) specializing in Energy Transitions and Management Consultancy at ESCP Business School. This combination of process engineering, battery fabrication, and corporate finance laid a comprehensive groundwork for my current studies.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to University College Cork?

Preparation required a highly structured approach. I mapped out my long-term goals and compared them against international programs. I reviewed course modules to ensure they aligned with my specific interests in grid integration and energy systems modeling. I also spent significant time reading the published research of faculty members.

How Did You Find Information About Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship and University College Cork?

I relied heavily on official university resources, international student forums, and the Education in Ireland portal. UCC immediately stood out due to its close association with the MaREI Research Centre and the Environmental Research Institute. The opportunity to study within a hub for climate action and marine research was exactly what I was searching for. I discovered the GOI IES scholarship while extensively researching merit-based funding options for international students committed to sustainable development.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the GRE and secured an overall score of 322, with a 168 in Quantitative and a 154 in Verbal. I also completed the IELTS Academic Examination, achieving an overall band score of 8.0 twice! My preparation was driven by disciplined self-study. I focused heavily on timed practice exams to build stamina and utilized online resources to refine my verbal reasoning and analytical writing skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship?

I treated the application and my Statement of Purpose with the utmost seriousness. The GOI IES panel looks beyond academic transcripts to evaluate your potential societal impact. I focused on weaving my multidisciplinary background into a cohesive narrative. I connected my early undergraduate research on Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries to my professional experience managing engineering teams in the UK, and finally to my goal of returning to India to advance grid-scale renewable energy. My objective was to demonstrate that I possessed a clear, actionable vision to contribute meaningfully to global decarbonization efforts.

How is Your Experience at University College Cork?

Having arrived recently, my experience has been both rigorous and immensely rewarding. The modules are incredibly hands-on and practical. Currently, I am deeply engaged in studying building energy physics and U-value calculations. We also recently completed a technical site visit to the Kilgarvan Wind Farm complex in County Kerry. Seeing the theoretical concepts we study operating at a commercial scale has been an exceptional learning experience.

How Do You Rate University College Cork Academically?

I rate it highly without hesitation. The integration of academic coursework with active, real-world research means we are studying the immediate challenges facing the Irish and European energy grids today. The education feels vital and directly applicable to the current climate crisis.

How Does University College Cork Support International Students?

The support network has been fantastic. Relocating from Trivandrum to Cork represents a significant shift in climate and culture. However, the international office and the vibrant student societies at UCC have provided excellent guidance, making the transition seamless and welcoming.

What Did You Pursue After the Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship?

Following graduation, I intend to leverage this specialized knowledge to work as a Sustainable Energy Engineer or Renewable Energy Consultant. My ultimate goal is to lead the design and integration of grid-scale energy storage systems and support large-scale industrial decarbonization strategies.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe the strength of my application lay in its cohesive narrative. Rather than simply listing my achievements, I illustrated how my rigorous engineering background from IIT, my strategic management training from ESCP, and my grassroots volunteering efforts fit together perfectly. I presented a very clear intent. I want to help India integrate vast capacities of non-fossil fuels, and I recognized that Ireland’s ambitious climate action ecosystem is the ideal environment to learn how to achieve that transition efficiently.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I could do it again, I would make community connection my priority right from the start. I would reach out to past GOI IES scholars much earlier and simply ask for their perspective. The academic network is surprisingly welcoming, and people are genuinely happy to guide you if you just drop your guard and start a conversation.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My most important advice is to be entirely authentic. Don't write what you think the committee wants to hear. Write what you are genuinely obsessed with. Also, start your essays weeks before the deadline. Sleep on them, edit them, and read them out loud to ensure they capture your true voice and convictions. Show them the actual human behind the grades, because at the end of the day, they are investing in you, not your transcript.
