The Journey

Hi, my name is Abdul Hafeez, and I come from a small town called Nasirabad in Sindh, Pakistan. Currently, I am pursuing a master’s degree in Ecology at the School of Environment, Northeast Normal University, China, under the fully funded Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC). My motivation for pursuing higher education comes from my lifelong fascination with science and scientists. Since childhood, I have enjoyed reading about scientists whose discoveries and inventions have made a significant difference in people's lives. Their contributions inspired me to pursue a career in science and contribute to society through research. Another reason I chose China for my higher education is its remarkable progress in science and technology. China has become one of the leading countries in scientific research and innovation, and I wanted to study in an environment where I could learn from these advancements, develop my research skills, and grow as a young scientist.

Chinese Government Scholarship Details

My studies in China are fully funded through the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which covers tuition fees, medical insurance, and university accommodation. In addition, the scholarship provides a monthly living allowance of RMB 3,000 for master’s students and RMB 3,500 for PhD students.

Educational Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Agricultural Entomology at Sindh Agriculture University, Pakistan, with a CGPA of 3.68 out of 4.00. Since my degree combined the study of agriculture and insects, it provided me with a strong foundation in both fields and helped me develop an interest in scientific research. While exploring opportunities for higher education, I discovered that many universities in China offer graduate programs related to agriculture, entomology, and ecology. Since my academic background was relevant to these fields, I decided to prepare myself and apply for programs that aligned with my interests and future research goals.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Northeast Normal University?

How Did You Find Information About Chinese Government Scholarship and Northeast Normal University?

During the second year of my undergraduate studies, I started exploring different scholarship opportunities for higher education abroad. I particularly focused on countries and universities where IELTS was not mandatory, as I could not afford the high examination fee at that time. While researching different options, I came across the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which became one of my top choices. Fortunately, there were plenty of online resources, especially YouTube videos, that provided useful information about the scholarship, its requirements, and the application process. I gradually started learning about the process and preparing the necessary documents. Finally, in my eighth semester, which was the last semester of my undergraduate degree, I submitted my application for the CSC Scholarship.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I did not take any English language proficiency test, such as IELTS or TOEFL, because many universities in China accept an English Medium of Instruction (MOI) certificate as an alternative. If your previous degree was taught entirely in English, you can request this certificate from your university. It officially confirms that English was the language of instruction during your previous studies. However, it is important to check the specific language requirements of each university, as not all institutions or programs accept this certificate in place of IELTS or TOEFL.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship?

Before submitting your application, I recommend looking for a potential supervisor whose research interests align with your academic background and future research goals. Once you identify a suitable professor, you should contact them through email, briefly introduce yourself, explain your research interests, and express your interest in joining their research group. If the professor agrees to supervise you and provides an acceptance letter, it can strengthen your scholarship application.

Many Chinese universities begin accepting applications around November or December, although deadlines vary by institution. Therefore, I suggest contacting professors well in advance, preferably between September and November, and preparing all the required documents before the application period begins. Keep in mind that an acceptance letter is not mandatory for every university or CSC scholarship category, so always check the specific admission requirements.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Mandarin?

The medium of instruction for my master’s degree is English, which means that all my academic courses are taught in English. However, we are also required to study Chinese for three semesters, which helps us develop basic communication skills and better understand the local language and culture.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Mandarin?

No

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe one of the key factors that made my application stand out was my research proposal. I put considerable effort into developing a clear and well-structured proposal that aligned with my academic background, research interests, and the expertise of my potential supervisor. I focused on identifying a relevant research problem, explaining its significance, and outlining how I intended to address it. I believe a strong research proposal demonstrates not only your academic preparation but also your motivation, research potential, and ability to think scientifically.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the application process again, I would spend more time developing and refining my research proposal. Although I believe my proposal was one of the strongest parts of my application, looking back, I realize that I could have improved it further by conducting a more thorough literature review, identifying clearer research gaps, and developing more specific research objectives. My advice to future applicants would be to start working on their research proposals early, as a well-prepared proposal can significantly strengthen their scholarship applications.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to students planning to apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship is to work hard, stay consistent, and never lose hope. The application process can be challenging and sometimes discouraging, but patience and determination are very important. Start preparing your documents early, keep improving your research proposal, and make sure it aligns with your academic interests and the research of your potential supervisor. Most importantly, don't let the fear of rejection stop you from applying. Believe in yourself, keep learning, and remember that every effort you make brings you one step closer to your goals.
