Both exist, but Korean is still very important. A good academic background is one that clearly matches the subject you want to study and shows that you can succeed after arrival. For engineering applicants, a prior engineering background is especially persuasive; for example, Kevin Mikhail Revilloza had a civil engineering degree and relevant government work in infrastructure planning before going on to graduate study.
