Are you interested in the HKUST acceptance rate? If so, you have come to the right place! Before that, however, let’s talk about the background information.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a publicly funded, research-intensive university based in Clear Water Bay, on the Sai Kung Peninsula in Hong Kong. Established in 1991, HKUST was founded as Hong Kong’s first research-focused university and has developed a strong global reputation for education, research, and innovation.

In just over three decades, the university has become one of the most prominent young universities in Asia. In addition to earning strong international rankings and research recognition, HKUST has played a role in supporting Hong Kong’s development as a center for knowledge, innovation, and technology.

The university has a 60-hectare campus in Clear Water Bay, giving students a full-scale campus environment in a scenic and relatively tranquil setting. HKUST is not directly on the MTR network; students and staff typically reach the campus by taking the MTR to nearby stations such as Choi Hung, Diamond Hill, Hang Hau, or Po Lam, and then transferring to a bus, minibus, or taxi.

Academically, HKUST is organized around the School of Science, School of Engineering, School of Business and Management, School of Humanities and Social Science, and Academy of Interdisciplinary Studies. HKUST offers 45+ undergraduate majors and 22 minors, along with a wide range of postgraduate programs. The university’s engineering-related subjects rank highly, including Data Science & Artificial Intelligence and Civil & Structural Engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. The Kellogg-HKUST Executive MBA program is also a notable graduate offering of the School of Business and Management.

One of the reasons attributed to the university’s success is its strong research culture and collaboration across disciplines and borders. The university also offers several advanced facilities and institutes for research. Key institutes include the Guangzhou HKUST Fok Ying Tung Research Institute and the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study. As you can see, HKUST is a world-class university, and admission is competitive.

Many academic activities take place in the Academic Building and other teaching venues on campus, which include lecture theaters, classrooms, laboratories, and office areas. The university’s main library is the Lee Shau Kee Library, which supports students with study spaces, computer facilities, and extensive learning resources. Furthermore, given the campus-based nature of the university, HKUST offers amenities such as restaurants, medical clinics, banks, a supermarket, a bookstore, postal services, sports facilities, and student activity spaces.

HKUST currently has a student enrollment of more than 20,000 students, including 11,765 undergraduates and 8,710 postgraduates as of December 2025. Non-local students, including students from Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, other parts of Asia, and beyond Asia, account for nearly half of the student body. The HKUST Students’ Union operates independently from the university, and students can also take part in more than 100 student organizations and societies.

Graduates and researchers from HKUST continue to make progress in fields such as science, engineering, technology, business, and medicine. Recent HKUST research includes SmartPath, an AI-powered pathology system launched in 2025 to support cancer-care workflows. Given the university’s academic and research strengths, HKUST is likely to remain an important institution for students interested in innovation-focused education in Asia.
