Marine biology is a specialized field that focuses on marine organisms and the ecosystems they inhabit. It draws on disciplines such as ecology, genetics, physiology, and oceanography. Marine biologists contribute to the study, conservation, and management of marine ecosystems.

Studying marine biology offers opportunities to explore the diverse world beneath the ocean’s surface. A degree or related academic pathway can lead to careers in research, education, government, consulting, conservation organizations, and other sectors. The available routes vary by university, as marine biology may be taught through a dedicated program, a broader environmental or biological sciences degree, individual courses, or research opportunities. Now, let’s take a look at the top marine biology schools in Asia.

Top Marine Biology Schools in Asia

1. University of Tokyo

Established in 1877, the University of Tokyo offers marine-related study through its agricultural and life sciences pathways. Undergraduate students can pursue Aquatic Life Science within the Faculty of Agriculture, while graduate students can study in the Department of Aquatic Bioscience.

The Department of Aquatic Bioscience covers areas such as aquatic ecosystem conservation, sustainable fisheries, applied marine biology, marine planktology, marine microbiology, fish population dynamics, and the ecology of marine organisms. The university also operates the Misaki Marine Biological Station, which was established in 1886 and supports zoological research and education.

2. Tsinghua University

Tsinghua University offers marine-related graduate study through the Institute for Ocean Engineering at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School.

The institute’s research areas include deep-sea engineering, deep-sea technology, coastal engineering and technology, and the marine ecological environment. Its 2026 international admissions guidance states that the institute offers three master’s programs and six doctoral programs to international students.

3. Peking University

Founded in 1898, Peking University supports marine-related research through the Institute of Ocean Research. The institute was established in 2013 as an interdisciplinary scientific research platform rather than as a standalone marine biology school.

Its research directions include marine science, marine engineering and technology, marine resources, marine governance and law, and marine strategy and culture. Current graduate student research areas listed by the institute include marine microbiology, marine energy and resource development, marine atmosphere, international law of the sea, and ocean big data. Prospective students should confirm the appropriate host department and degree route before applying.

4. Kyoto University

Kyoto University offers marine-related study through several pathways. Within the Faculty of Agriculture, the Department of Bioresource Science includes Marine Life Science. Its specialized fields include fisheries and environmental oceanography, marine stock enhancement biology, marine microbiology, marine environmental microbiology, marine bioproduct technology, marine biological function, and coastal fisheries ecology.

Students may also benefit from the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory in Shirahama. The laboratory was established in 1922 and supports education and research in marine biology, including the study of marine invertebrates, systematics, ecology, and other natural history sciences.

5. Nanyang Technological University

Nanyang Technological University does not list a standalone marine biology degree at its Asian School of the Environment. However, the school offers undergraduate and graduate environmental science pathways that may be relevant to students interested in marine systems.

NTU’s Asian School of the Environment offers undergraduate Environmental Earth Systems Science programs, a Master by Research in Environmental Science, a Master of Science in Environmental Sustainability Science, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science by research. Its undergraduate course listings include Marine and Freshwater Ecology and Oceanography.

Students should review the current curriculum and faculty research areas to determine whether the available pathway matches their marine biology interests.

6. University of Hong Kong

At the University of Hong Kong (HKU), the School of Biological Sciences offers a Marine Biology minor for undergraduate Bachelor of Science students. The school also lists the Master of Science in Integrative Marine Ecology and Conservation, as well as research routes leading to an M.Phil. or Ph.D.

The Swire Institute of Marine Science is an HKU research facility on the Cape d’Aguilar peninsula, on the shores of Hong Kong’s only Marine Reserve. Its research focuses on shallow-water marine ecosystems, including ecology and biodiversity, human impacts, and conservation and management.

Asia has universities with marine-related degree pathways, courses, and research opportunities. Studying at one of the institutions above can help prepare students for careers in academia, research, environmental management, and marine conservation. Because the available routes differ by university, prospective applicants should review each official program page carefully before applying.
