The Czech Republic is popular with visitors for its historic cities, scenic countryside, and attractive landscapes. Many international students are also drawn to the country because of its study options and international-student resources.

The country has a well-established higher education system and continues to attract international students. In 2024, 55,996 foreign students studied at Czech universities. Law education is available mainly through Czech-taught long-cycle master’s programs and other accredited programs, while international students can also find English-taught exchange courses, LL.M. options, English-taught postgraduate study, and doctoral opportunities at selected faculties.

Here are some of the well-known law schools in the Czech Republic.

Top Law Schools in the Czech Republic

1. Masaryk University

  • Study Program
  • Degrees Offered: Bachelor’s, Master’s, Ph.D. | Medium of Instruction: Czech

The Faculty of Law at Masaryk University is one of the major law faculties in the Czech Republic. Its accredited law-related degree programs are primarily taught in Czech and include professionally oriented bachelor’s programs, master’s programs, and doctoral programs. The faculty focuses on legal education, research, and practical training for future legal and public administration professionals.

At the bachelor’s level, the faculty currently lists Administrative Law, Criminalistic Studies, Senior Officer of Justice, Theory and Practice of Criminal and Administrative Proceedings, and International Commercial Law Studies. These bachelor’s programs have a standard length of three years and are taught in Czech; most are offered in combined form, while International Commercial Law Studies is listed as distance study. The follow-up master’s program in Public Administration is a two-year, Czech-taught combined program. The faculty also offers the five-year, Czech-taught long-cycle master’s program in Law and Legal Science, which includes practical training and is the main qualification route for many regulated legal professions in the Czech Republic.

Doctoral study at the Faculty of Law is research-focused. Current official Masaryk University doctoral listings for law-related programs, such as Public Law Studies and Private Law and Civil Procedural Law, show a standard length of four years. Applicants interested in LL.M. or other professional postgraduate courses should confirm the current offer directly with the faculty because the faculty’s official degree-program pages may differ from older LL.M. listings.

2. Charles University

Charles University is located in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Prague is home to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic, as well as the President’s office at Prague Castle. The faculty’s location gives students access to many legal, political, and public institutions, which makes Charles University one of the country’s prominent places to study law.

The Faculty of Law offers a five-year, long-cycle master’s program in Law and Legal Science taught exclusively in Czech. It also runs the English-taught post-bachelor master’s program Specialised Law Studies, a two-year full-time program with specializations in Business and Competition Law, Human Rights Law, and Health Law. The faculty notes that this English-taught follow-up master’s program does not replace the five-year Czech law degree required for regulated legal professions in the Czech Republic.

International exchange students can study English-taught courses through the Czech Legal System in European Context program. Erasmus+ students may study at the faculty for one semester or a full academic year, and students coming through other exchange agreements can participate in the same English-taught program. The faculty also lists LL.M. options such as International Human Rights and Protection of Environment and Health and Law, and it offers English-language doctoral study, including Theoretical Legal Sciences – Law and Legal Theory in European Context; current admissions information also lists Digital Social Science as a joint doctoral program with a Law and Data pathway.
