Top Countries to Study for Qatari Students

Many students from Qatar consider English-speaking destinations such as the UK and the USA because of language, institutional choice, and global recognition. However, basing your decision on these factors alone can limit your options. Here are some of the top countries to study abroad for Qatari students:

1. Japan

Japan is a strong choice for Qatari students pursuing technology, science, engineering, healthcare, or culture-related fields. Before applying, students should confirm that their intended university and program appear on Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education approved lists for scholarship or self-funded study.

The Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship is administered for Qatari nationals through the Embassy of Japan in Qatar and supports eligible students who want to study at Japanese higher education institutions. The scholarship has undergraduate and graduate study routes, and application dates and requirements change by intake, so students should check the embassy page before applying.

Educational institutions such as the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, Institute of Science Tokyo, formerly Tokyo Institute of Technology, and The University of Osaka, offer programs that may align with your career goals. According to Study in Japan, first-year academic fees are approximately 820,000 yen at national universities, about 910,000 yen at local public universities, about 1,300,000 yen at private universities outside medical, dental, and pharmaceutical fields, and about 3,800,000 yen for private medical, dental, and pharmaceutical programs.

2. Malaysia

Qatar and Malaysia maintain friendly relations, and Malaysia is a practical destination for Qatari students seeking an international education in a multicultural environment. Malaysia’s official international education portal describes the country as an internationally recognized higher education destination with public universities, private universities, and foreign branch campuses.

Malaysia has 11 foreign university branch campuses, where students can study globally recognized degrees at a more affordable cost than at many main campuses abroad. Students should still confirm each program’s recognition with Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education and check the university’s latest tuition fees before applying.

Universities such as Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation, MAHSA University, Curtin University Malaysia, and Multimedia University offer a wide range of degree programs. Because fees vary by institution and course, students should compare current costs through university pages and Malaysia’s official course search rather than relying on older fee estimates.

3. United Kingdom

Among foreign study destinations, the United Kingdom stands out because of its English-language environment and internationally recognized universities. It remains a popular option for Qatari students because many programs are taught in English, making it easier for students to settle into academic life.

Qatari students should check the current Ministry of Education and Higher Education scholarship and approved university lists before applying. Some scholarships are open to Qatari nationals through government or semi-government bodies, but eligibility rules and supported university lists can change by year.

The United Kingdom has four universities in the QS World University Rankings 2027 top 10, including Imperial College London, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and UCL. The cost of living in the UK ranges from £1,300 to £1,400 per month in London and £900 to £1,300 per month in the rest of the UK, according to the British Council. International postgraduate tuition fees generally range from £9,000 to £30,000, while undergraduate international tuition fees range from £11,400 to £38,000.

4. USA

The USA has nearly 4,000 Title IV degree-granting colleges and universities, which means Qatari students have many options, including public universities, private universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. Students can compare programs based on cost, location, financial aid, academic fit, and long-term career goals.

Another advantage of studying in the USA is the wide availability of English-language academic support. The EducationUSA center at the U.S. Embassy in Doha provides official information and advising for students in Qatar who want to study in the United States.

Some of the highest-ranked universities in the USA include Harvard University, the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Costs vary widely by institution and residency status. For 2025–26, the College Board reported average private nonprofit four-year tuition and fees of about $45,000, while public university tuition varies by state and is usually higher for out-of-state and international students. Scholarships and financial aid can reduce the cost, and some awards may include housing or a monthly stipend.

5. Australia

Australia remains a major international study destination and is known for high-quality education, multicultural cities, and globally recognized qualifications. Qatari students should not assume that visa requirements are easy; they should plan around current Student visa subclass 500 requirements, including a Confirmation of Enrolment, English evidence when required, the Genuine Student requirement, financial capacity, Overseas Student Health Cover, health and character checks, and an online application through ImmiAccount.

The official Study Australia portal helps students search for courses, education providers, and scholarships. Australian universities also offer online and blended study options in some programs, but availability depends on the provider and course.

Universities such as the University of Melbourne, the University of Sydney, UNSW Sydney, and the University of Queensland provide globally recognized education. Study Australia notes that tuition fees vary by education provider, study level, and location, so students should check each university’s latest fee page. Student visa fees are from AUD 2,000 per application, and applicants must show at least AUD 29,710 in financial capacity for visa purposes.

Qatari students seeking high-quality education and a culturally enriching environment often choose to study abroad. However, complications can arise when selecting a university, checking program recognition, calculating total costs, and preparing visa documents. The destinations mentioned above can be strong options for Qatari students, but students should verify recognition, tuition, scholarship eligibility, and visa rules on official pages before applying.
