The Journey

My name is Watcharadet Kaewman, and I am from Thailand. I earned a Bachelor of Chemistry with first honors from Prince of Songkhla University, Thailand. After completing my undergraduate studies, I continued pursuing my master’s degree for two years with an organic chemistry degree in May 2023 at the same university, and I am currently a PhD candidate in the synthetic and mechanistic research group in the chemistry department at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Thailand Government Funding Details

I am currently pursuing my PhD at the University of Nevada, Reno, where I receive full tuition funding through a Thailand government. The total value of this support is approximately $66,500 per year (2023-2028), which covers tuition and provides additional support to assist with living expenses.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I also received the two other scholarships from the UNR institution that were available at the time of my application, including:

  1. Graduate assistantship (2023-2024) $56,500 per year
  2. UNR Dean’s merit scholarship $10,000 per year (2024-2025)
  3. Being nominated for the UNR Chemistry Graduate Scholarship and the Raymond H. Berner Scholarship

Per my academic excellence, I am invited to join the Phi Kappa Phi community (the nation’s oldest and most selective multidisciplinary collegiate honor society), which selects the top 10% of seniors and graduate students. Moreover, I have been formally accepted to participate in the Chemistry of Biological Interaction program (NSF-funded training program) at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Educational Background

I earned my Bachelor of Chemistry from Prince of Songkhla University, Thailand, with a GPA equivalent to 3.8/4.0 (First honor). Chemistry is a very practical and application-focused discipline, which has allowed me to gain hands-on experience in chemical processes, laboratory techniques, and industrial operations. During my undergraduate studies, my research basically focused on the development of organic methodology for the synthesis of small bioactive molecules with an emphasis on building alternative organic tools to pursue organic molecules. Some key goals include utilizing abundant building blocks derived from petroleum products (e.g., alkenes, alkynes) or renewable resources (e.g., furan and furfural) and developing methods to convert them into bioactive compounds (potential therapeutics) in as few steps as possible. Another goal is to apply known mechanisms to unknown substrates and access motifs that were difficult or impossible to do before. These experiences in research not only strengthened my technical skills but also gave me a clear sense of direction, which ultimately motivated me and prepared me to pursue graduate studies in Chemistry, and my dream goal is to become a chemistry professor.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Nevada, Reno?

I approached the application process in a structured and strategic way. I began by identifying universities that offered my intended field of study at the graduate level and then focused on research that I would like to be interested in exploring. I reached out to many chemistry professors in various universities and had interviews with them virtually to gain more ideas and a better understanding of their ongoing research. Also, I carefully reviewed each institution’s admission requirements to ensure a strong fit and tailored my application materials accordingly. Eventually, I decided to choose the most promising institution that aligned with my academic background and long-term goals.

How Did You Find Information About Thailand Government Funding and the University of Nevada, Reno?

I relied primarily on official university websites, departmental pages, and graduate admissions portals to gather accurate and up-to-date information. I also reviewed funding and assistantship opportunities listed by departments, which helped me understand how financial support is structured within each program.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Since my home country doesn’t use English as a primary language, I am required to take an English proficiency exam, and I chose to take TOEFL IBT. At the time, I was working full-time, and I knew I needed to be serious in the future. I paid for the test and booked a date right away. I reached out to my network, people who had already taken the exam, gathered practice materials and got tutoring online with experts. For at least three months, I woke up every day to study and prepare. I trusted the work I had put in, and I trusted the process.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Thailand Government Funding?

Since I am a scholar student with my undergraduate degree, I received an announcement from my scholarship organizer that this scholarship can support me in studying abroad, and I should apply. Eventually, I decided to apply.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Clear and realistic study plan, Strong academic record, Well-written and focused personal statement, Organized and accurate submission

Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?

If I were applying again, I would begin preparing to study for an English proficiency exam earlier to reduce my stress and pressure. Moreover, I would apply to a wider range of programs, as the journey has strengthened my confidence in my academic profile and potential. I would also begin the application process earlier to allow more time for refining materials and exploring additional opportunities.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice is to stay organized, be patient, and divide a big task into small steps every day to encourage yourself and reduce overwhelm. If there is a standard exam that needs to be taken, plan to study very early. For finding the university to study, find research programs beyond rankings, and choose universities that align with your research interests and funding opportunities. Start your Statement of Purpose well in advance, tailor it to each program, and seek feedback from mentors and professors. One important trick is "do not underestimate yourself, put effort into pursuing the goal, and accept any results that come out."
