How I Secured a Fully Funded Non-Degree Program at Valencia College, USA Through the Community College Initiative Program Scholarship

I am Vishal Kumar. I come from the eastern part of an Indian state called Bihar, and my hometown is Patna. I completed my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and later studied International Business and Entrepreneurship through the Community College Initiative Program at Valencia College in the United States. I decided to pursue further education in this field because I am deeply interested in business, global markets, and entrepreneurship. I was awarded the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program Scholarship, a fully funded exchange scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

The scholarship covered the full cost of my one-year academic program in International Business and Entrepreneurship at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, USA, including:

The total value of the scholarship was approximately USD 40,000–50,000.

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in 2023 from a semi-government college in Patna, Bihar, India. My CGPA was 7.82/10 at my graduation. During my undergraduate studies, I developed a strong foundation in business management, marketing, finance, human resource management, entrepreneurship, and organisational behaviour. My coursework helped me understand how businesses operate and the role they play in driving economic and social development.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Valencia College?

My journey toward becoming a U.S. exchange alumnus began in 2020, during one of the most challenging periods of my life. Growing up in a small village near Patna, Bihar, I had limited access to opportunities that could help me develop my communication and leadership skills. Everything changed when I was selected for the English Access Microscholarship Program, a fully funded initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata in partnership with Diksha Foundation, an NGO based in Patna.

The primary goal of the Access Program is to empower high school students from underserved and marginalized communities by strengthening their English communication skills and building their confidence. The program was a two-year, in-person, after-school initiative conducted at the Diksha Foundation center in Patna. However, it offered much more than English language training. Through workshops, cultural activities, leadership sessions, and community projects, I developed critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills while gaining exposure to global perspectives. In 2022, I successfully graduated from the program, becoming part of a global network of Access alumni.

Following my graduation, the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata nominated four students from my Access cohort to apply for the prestigious Community College Initiative (CCI) Program, another fully funded scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. What followed was an intensive eight-month selection process that tested not only our academic abilities but also our leadership potential, communication skills, and commitment to community service.

The selection process included statement-of-purpose writing, multiple interviews, English language assessments, medical examinations, and visa formalities. Throughout this journey, I remained focused and determined, knowing that this opportunity could transform my future. At the end of the process, only two students from our Access cohort were selected for the CCI 2023–24 Cohort, and I was honored to be one of them. Nationwide, only 17 students from India were selected for the program that year.

As part of the selection process, I was required to take the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), which assessed listening and reading skills. The examination was sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata. Despite having only six days to prepare, I independently studied using free resources available online and achieved a score of 715 out of 990. This experience reinforced my belief that determination, self-discipline, and a willingness to learn can overcome resource limitations.

Being selected for the CCI Program was a life-changing milestone. It allowed me to study International Business and Entrepreneurship at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, gain international exposure, develop leadership skills, and engage with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Looking back, the English Access Program was the first stepping stone that opened doors to opportunities I had never imagined possible. It not only transformed my educational journey but also inspired me to use education as a tool to create positive change in my community and beyond.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Community College Initiative?

When I received the nomination from the U.S. Consulate General Kolkata for the Community College Initiative (CCI) Program, I immediately recognized it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Coming from a modest background in Bihar, I knew that opportunities like this could completely transform the course of my life. At the same time, I understood that receiving a nomination was only the beginning of a long and highly competitive selection process.

The most crucial stage of the application was the Statement of Purpose (SOP). I firmly believed that my SOP would determine whether I moved forward in the selection process, so I dedicated myself fully to it. Rather than jumping straight into writing, I first reached out to previous CCI alumni to learn from their experiences and understand what made an application stand out. Their guidance provided valuable insights, but the real work began when I started reflecting on my own journey.

For days, I looked back on my life experiences, challenges, achievements, and aspirations. I asked myself difficult questions: What had shaped me into the person I was? What impact had I created in my community? Why did I deserve this opportunity? Most importantly, how could I tell my story authentically?

I spent nearly two weeks crafting my SOP. During that time, I wrote four complete drafts, revising each version carefully. I focused on presenting an honest picture of who I was while highlighting the qualities that the program valued, leadership, communication, adaptability, critical thinking, resilience, and a commitment to community service. By the time I submitted the final version, I felt that it genuinely reflected my journey, my struggles, and my ambitions.

When I successfully cleared the SOP stage and later performed well in the interviews, I gained confidence, but I never allowed myself to become complacent. Instead, I viewed every subsequent stage as a fresh opportunity to prove myself. Whether it was the English language assessment, medical examinations, document verification, or visa formalities, I approached each step with the same seriousness and dedication. I paid attention to every detail, conducted thorough research, and always tried to present the best version of myself. Looking back, I believe this mindset of consistent effort played a significant role in helping me succeed at every stage of the process.

During this period, there was one unexpected source of inspiration that profoundly influenced my mindset: the book The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy. The book introduced me to the concepts of visualization, positive thinking, and the power of belief. While reading it, I developed a habit of imagining myself achieving my goals, receiving the scholarship, studying in the United States, and creating opportunities for myself and my community. At the time, these dreams seemed distant and almost impossible. Yet, as the months passed, many of the things I had visualized began to become reality. Looking back today, it feels remarkable how closely my aspirations aligned with the opportunities that eventually unfolded in my life.

One lesson from this journey has stayed with me ever since. Throughout the entire application process, I chose to remain quiet about my progress. I did not tell my friends, relatives, or even my parents about the scholarship application. In fact, my parents only learned about it when I needed to travel to another city for my visa interview. Until then, they had no idea that I was competing for an international scholarship. I preferred to focus all my energy on the process rather than discussing the outcome. For me, it was important to let my actions speak louder than my words.

Only after I received my final plane ticket to the United States did I share the news with my family, friends, and community. The joy of celebrating that achievement with them was unforgettable. It was not just my success; it was a victory for everyone who had supported me throughout my journey.

The CCI Program taught me lessons that extend far beyond academics. It taught me patience during uncertainty, determination in the face of challenges, the importance of preparation, the power of imagination combined with hard work, and, above all, the value of believing in myself even when the path ahead seemed impossible. These lessons continue to guide me today, and I am grateful that I learned them at such an early stage of my life.

How is Your Experience at Valencia College?

My experience at Valencia College in Orlando, Florida, was truly life-changing. Before I share what made my time there so special, it is important to understand two things. First, this was my first time traveling to the United States and my first time living outside India. Everything, from the culture and education system to daily life and social interactions, was completely different from anything I had experienced before. Second, Valencia College is a community college, a concept that was relatively new to me when I arrived in the United States.

I still remember landing in Orlando with a mixture of excitement, curiosity, and uncertainty. As someone who came from a small village near Patna, Bihar, the experience of studying in the United States felt surreal. Every day presented new challenges and learning opportunities. I had to adapt to a new culture, communicate with people from diverse backgrounds, and navigate an unfamiliar environment. What initially seemed overwhelming soon became an incredible journey of personal growth.

Very quickly, Valencia College became much more than just an educational institution for me, it became a place where I discovered the best version of myself. It was the platform where I was able to showcase and strengthen my communication skills, leadership abilities, networking skills, and confidence. The college provided an environment that encouraged students to step out of their comfort zones, explore their potential, and actively engage with the campus community.

One of the aspects I admired most about Valencia College was its commitment to student success. The college offered a wide range of support services designed to help students thrive academically and professionally. Whenever students needed assistance with writing assignments, they could visit the Writing Center. Those seeking help with mathematics had access to the Mathematics Center. There were also dedicated Career Centers, Internship Services, International Student Services, tutoring programs, and many other resources available to support students throughout their educational journey.

However, what truly made Valencia College stand out for me was its vibrant campus culture. Almost every week, there was an event, workshop, cultural celebration, leadership activity, or networking opportunity taking place somewhere on campus. These events created countless opportunities to interact with students, professors, staff members, and community leaders. Through these experiences, I built meaningful friendships, expanded my professional network, and learned from people whose perspectives were vastly different from my own.

One lesson I learned at Valencia College is that opportunities are everywhere, but it is up to each individual to recognize and utilize them. Valencia opened countless doors for me, but the responsibility of walking through those doors and making the most of those opportunities rested entirely on my shoulders. I embraced that responsibility wholeheartedly, and as a result, I grew academically, professionally, and personally in ways I never imagined possible.

Looking back, every moment I spent at Valencia College holds a special place in my heart. It was a place that challenged me, supported me, and helped me transform from a student with dreams into a young leader with greater confidence and purpose. My experience there not only enriched my education but also shaped my outlook on life. Even today, when I reflect on my journey in the United States, Valencia College remains one of the most meaningful chapters of my life, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities, memories, and lifelong lessons it gave me.

How Does Valencia College Support International Students?

I briefly mentioned this in my previous response, but I would like to share more about the incredible support system available to students at Valencia College, especially international students.

When I first arrived in the United States, everything felt unfamiliar. I was thousands of miles away from home, living in a new country, surrounded by different cultures, customs, and ways of life. Naturally, there were moments when I felt nervous and uncertain. However, one of the reasons I was able to adapt so quickly was the welcoming and supportive community at Valencia College.

One of the best decisions I made during my time there was joining the International Student Club. The club brought together students from all over the world, creating a space where everyone felt valued, included, and supported. As an international student, it was comforting to meet others who were going through similar experiences, adjusting to a new culture, navigating college life, and building a support network far away from home.

The club did much more than organize meetings. It created a sense of belonging. Members regularly planned social gatherings, cultural events, community activities, fun trips, and campus engagement opportunities. Whether someone needed a friend to talk to, advice about life in the United States, or simply people to spend time with, there was always someone willing to help. Through this club, I formed meaningful friendships with students from different countries and learned about cultures from around the world. It quickly became one of my favorite parts of my Valencia experience.

Beyond student organizations, Valencia College provided outstanding academic and personal support. The college library was one of my favorite places on campus. It offered extensive resources for learning, quiet study areas for individual work, and collaborative spaces for group projects. Whenever I needed a peaceful environment to focus, conduct research, or prepare for exams, the library became my second home.

What impressed me most was that Valencia seemed to have a solution for almost every challenge an international student could face. Whether it was academic support, career guidance, cultural adjustment, mental well-being, visa-related assistance, housing concerns, or opportunities for involvement on campus, there was always a dedicated office, program, or staff member ready to help.

Looking back, I often tell people that Valencia College was not just an institution where I studied; it was a community that genuinely cared about its students. As an international student, I never felt alone. Instead, I felt supported, encouraged, and empowered to succeed. That welcoming environment made my transition to life in the United States much smoother and allowed me to focus on making the most of every opportunity that came my way.

Even today, when I reflect on my experience, I am grateful not only for the education I received but also for the people, friendships, and support systems that made Valencia College feel like a second home.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I would say spend more time on writing your SOP, be honest about what you are writing, and showcase what you did without considering whether your contribution was small or big.
