The Journey

My name is Tendai Magumo, and I come from Gokwe, a rural area in Zimbabwe. Growing up in a rural community, I experienced firsthand how easily a young person's educational journey can be interrupted by circumstances beyond their control. During my secondary school years, I reached a point where I was on the verge of dropping out of school due to financial challenges. At that critical moment, the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) recognized my potential, believed in me, and supported me to continue my education. That moment changed the direction of my life and gave me the opportunity to pursue my dreams.

With CAMFED's continued support throughout my secondary school and university education, I went on to study Financial Mathematics at the University of Zimbabwe, where I graduated with a First Class Honours degree. My commitment to academic excellence earned me several recognitions, including the Chancellor's Award from the President of Zimbabwe for Overall Best Graduating Science Student, the University Special Recognition for being the Best Undergraduate Student in the Faculty of Science, the University Special Recognition for being the Most Consistent Undergraduate Graduating Student, and the University Book Prize.

I am currently pursuing a Master of Science in Business Analytics at Arizona State University. I chose this field because I believe data has the power to solve real-world problems, improve decision-making, and create meaningful impact in communities. Beyond academics, I am passionate about youth leadership, mentorship, and community engagement, and I hope to use my education and experiences to create opportunities for others and give back to my community, my country, and globally.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Details

I was awarded the fully funded Mastercard Foundation Scholarship to pursue a Master of Science in Business Analytics at Arizona State University. Receiving this scholarship has given me the opportunity to further my education in a field that aligns with my passion for using data to solve real-world problems and create meaningful impact in communities. The scholarship provides comprehensive support for my postgraduate studies, allowing me to focus on my academic, personal, and professional development while preparing for a career dedicated to creating positive change.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I did not receive any other scholarship for my postgraduate studies. However, my higher education journey, from secondary school through university, was supported by CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education).

Educational Background

I completed my Bachelor of Science Honours in Financial Mathematics at the University of Zimbabwe, graduating with First Class Honours. The programme equipped me with strong analytical, statistical, and problem-solving skills while strengthening my ability to use data to solve complex problems. My commitment to academic excellence was recognized through many prestigious awards, as mentioned in my introduction. This academic background provided a strong foundation for pursuing Business Analytics, combining quantitative analysis with critical thinking. Through my leadership and community engagement experiences, I realized the power of using data to inform decisions, solve real-world challenges, and create meaningful impact. This inspired me to further develop these skills by pursuing a Master's degree in Business Analytics.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I learned about the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Arizona State University through CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education). As a CAMFED beneficiary, I regularly received information about educational and scholarship opportunities through the network. CAMFED shared the scholarship announcement, application links, and guidance throughout the application process, which helped me understand the requirements and prepare a competitive application.

The application process began with applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at Arizona State University. After progressing through the scholarship selection process, I was invited to complete my application to Arizona State University. To prepare, I carefully organized my academic transcripts, recommendation letters, personal statement, and other supporting documents to ensure my application reflected both my academic achievements and leadership experiences.

Although Arizona State University required proof of English proficiency, I did not take the TOEFL or IELTS because I had completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Zimbabwe, where English is the language of instruction. Instead, I submitted an official letter from my university confirming this, which fulfilled the English language requirement.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

I prepared for the scholarship by carefully reviewing the application requirements and ensuring that every part of my application reflected my academic journey, leadership experiences, and community involvement. I took time to write authentic personal statements that clearly communicated my story, my aspirations, and the impact I hoped to make through further education. I also prepared all the required documents in advance, including my academic transcripts, recommendation letters, and proof of English proficiency, to ensure that my application was complete and submitted on time. Throughout the process, CAMFED provided guidance, shared useful resources, and encouraged me to present my experiences confidently and authentically.

How is Your Experience at Arizona State University?

My experience at Arizona State University has been enriching. I would rate the university very highly because it combines academic excellence with practical learning, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to solving real-world challenges. The university also provides excellent support for international students through academic advising, career services, student organizations, and resources that help students adjust both academically and socially. All my classes are conducted in English, which has made it easy to fully participate in lectures, discussions, and coursework. Alongside my studies, I continue to serve as a CAMFED Association Team Leader, supporting young women through mentorship, networking, and career development initiatives. Since my programme is taught entirely in English, students who are proficient in English should not face academic challenges related to language.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it reflected more than just academic achievements. It told the story of resilience, growth, leadership, and service. From being on the verge of dropping out of school in rural Gokwe to graduating with First Class Honours and receiving several academic awards, my journey demonstrated determination and perseverance. Beyond academics, I showed a strong commitment to giving back through my leadership and mentorship roles with CAMFED, where I continue to support and empower young women. I believe the combination of academic excellence, leadership, community impact, and a clear vision for using my education to create positive change made my application stand out.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

Looking back, I would not change much about my preparation because I started the process early, took time to understand the requirements, and ensured that every part of my application reflected my authentic story. If I were to go through the process again, I would probably connect with more former scholarship recipients to gain additional insights into their experiences and learn from their advice. Overall, I believe that careful preparation, authenticity, and confidence in my journey contributed to the success of my application.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

The advice I would give to anyone applying for a similar scholarship is to believe in yourself and never underestimate the value of your story. Strong academic results are important, but scholarship providers also want to see your resilience, leadership, and the impact you have made in your community. Start preparing your application early, understand the requirements, and present your experiences honestly and confidently. Most importantly, don't let your background or the challenges you have faced limit your ambitions. Your circumstances do not define your future; your determination, hard work, and willingness to create positive change do.
