The Journey
My name is Safwa Abuel-Azayem, and I am a proud Egyptian who strongly believes in the power of science to elevate nations and transform societies. I have always been passionate about sustainability and driven by a vision to contribute to solving real challenges.
This passion led me to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Energy Engineering at Zewail City of Science and Technology (an institution founded and named after by Dr. Ahmed Zewail, Egypt’s Nobel Laureate in Chemistry). Studying there inspired me to aim higher and reinforced my belief that Egypt and the region can produce world-class scientific contributions.
During my early professional experience in solar energy and energy efficiency across the Middle East, I noticed a significant gap between technological advancements and their implementation in the market. This realization motivated me to pursue a postgraduate degree to deepen my knowledge and better bridge this gap.
Germany was my top destination due to its global leadership in renewable energy and advanced technologies. I was particularly inspired by Germany’s transition toward green energy. I aspired to learn from the German experience and to contribute to similar developments in my home region.
I chose the REMENA (MSc.) in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Engineering, a dual program between Cairo University (Egypt) and the University of Kassel (Germany). What attracted me most was its multidisciplinary approach, covering technology, energy policy, economics, and market dynamics, making it highly relevant to the MENA region.
I am truly grateful to have received a DAAD scholarship to pursue this program.
DAAD REMENA Scholarship Details
I was awarded a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the world’s largest funding organization for international academic exchange.
The REMENA Scholarship covered Tuition fees and a living stipend.
This support allowed me to fully focus on my studies and professional growth without financial burden.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
I also received a merit scholarship for my undergraduate studies at Zewail City, funded directly by the university.
My Bachelor’s Degree is in Energy Engineering, Zewail City, with a minor in Environmental Engineering. My academic background built a strong foundation in energy systems, renewable technologies, and sustainability, preparing me well for advanced interdisciplinary studies in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and policy.

English
What Did You Pursue After the DAAD REMENA Scholarship?
At the last MSc. For a semester, I interned at UNIDO headquarters in Vienna, contributing to sustainable energy initiatives across Africa and the MENA region. After completing my studies, I continued working in the energy efficiency field, gaining professional experience and contributing to sustainability initiatives.
I am also aiming to expand further into research and policy impact, to influence energy strategies in the region.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing German?
Academic life was manageable in English. I had some German knowledge before going there, but it was difficult to handle daily life there with English and a little German I knew. Thus, I took a German course there, and I tried to improve my German by watching lots of movies, reading all signs and letters in German instead of translating everything, know more about the culture, which greatly enhanced my experience.
