My name is Rokhaya Diop, and I am from Senegal. I have always been passionate about mathematics, technology, and problem-solving. Over time, my interests evolved toward data science, artificial intelligence, and applied mathematics, particularly for applications related to energy and healthcare in Africa.

I obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science in Senegal before pursuing advanced studies in mathematics and data science. I later joined AIMS Senegal as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar, where I strengthened my skills in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and scientific computing.

I decided to pursue further education in these fields because I strongly believe that mathematics and AI can contribute to solving important development challenges in Africa, especially in areas such as energy systems, environmental analysis, and healthcare.

I received the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship at AIMS Senegal.

The scholarship covered tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and academic support throughout the program. Beyond financial support, it also provided leadership training, mentorship opportunities, and access to a network of talented African students.

At the moment, the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship was my major scholarship opportunity.

Educational Background

I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science obtained in Senegal. I also pursued graduate studies in Algebra and Applications as well as studies related to data science and artificial intelligence.

My educational background provided me with strong analytical, mathematical, and programming skills, which prepared me well for advanced studies and research-oriented projects in AI and applied mathematics.

Throughout my academic journey, I worked on projects involving machine learning,      computer vision, predictive analytics, and natural language processing.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to AIMS Senegal?

I spent time researching institutions whose academic programs aligned with my interests and long-term goals. I focused on institutions with strong programs in mathematics, artificial intelligence, and data science.

I also worked on strengthening my academic profile through research projects, leadership activities, and technical skills development.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I mainly prepared my academic documents, motivation letters, and technical background for the application process. I also continuously improved my English communication and academic writing skills through practice, coursework, and online resources.

Preparing for the scholarship required discipline, consistency, and patience. I worked carefully on presenting not only my academic achievements, but also my motivations, leadership experiences, and future goals.

I tried to clearly explain how my studies and future projects could contribute to solving challenges in my community and across Africa.

What Did You Pursue After the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship?

After the scholarship, I continued my studies in a Master’s program in Algebra while further developing my experience in data science, artificial intelligence, and applied modeling. After completing my studies, I plan to enter the professional world in order to gain more practical experience and continue working on impactful projects. I also intend to apply for PhD scholarships to pursue research in applied mathematics and artificial intelligence.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing French?

No, because the majority of the courses and academic activities are conducted in English. This allows international students to follow the program and integrate academically without needing to master the local language.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of the combination of strong academic preparation, clear goals, leadership experiences, and authenticity.

Instead of trying to present a perfect story, I focused on sharing my real journey, my motivations, and my desire to contribute to Africa’s development through mathematics, artificial intelligence, and research.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would start preparing even earlier and apply to even more international opportunities.

I would also spend more time connecting with previous scholarship recipients and mentors to gain additional insights about the application process.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

• First, believe in your abilities and do not underestimate yourself. Many students miss opportunities simply because they think they are not qualified enough.
• Second, prepare early and work consistently on building your academic profile, technical skills, leadership experiences, and communication skills.
• Third, be authentic in your application. Scholarship committees want to understand your real motivations, experiences, and future goals.
• Finally, remain persistent. Rejections and challenges are part of the journey, but discipline, patience, and perseverance can open incredible opportunities.
