Fulbright Scholar Rinanda Shaleha from Indonesia Shares Their Journey of Securing a Fully Funded PhD at The Pennsylvania State University, United States

My name is Rinanda Shaleha, and I am from Indonesia. I received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue my Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, in the College of Health and Human Development.

I began my doctoral journey in Fall 2022 and completed my Ph.D. in Spring 2026 after defending my dissertation.

My academic background is in Cognitive Psychology, and over time, I became increasingly interested in human development, aging, daily life, technology use, and well-being. I decided to pursue a Ph.D. to gain deeper research training and broader academic experience, particularly in an international, cross-cultural academic environment. I believed that doctoral training would help me develop as a researcher, educator, and future academic.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Details

I received the Fulbright Foreign Student Program scholarship to pursue my doctoral studies at The Pennsylvania State University. Fulbright is one of the most prestigious international scholarship programs and has provided opportunities for scholars around the world for many decades. For me, the scholarship made it possible to pursue advanced doctoral training in the United States and become part of a global academic community.

I primarily pursued and accepted the Fulbright scholarship for my doctoral studies.

Educational Background

Before beginning my Ph.D., I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology at Universitas Brawijaya in Indonesia and my master’s degree in Psychology at Universitas Gadjah Mada.

My academic background in psychology gave me a strong foundation for understanding human behavior, development, well-being, and the ways people interact with their social and cultural environments. Through my undergraduate and master’s training, I became increasingly interested in research and how scientific evidence can help us better understand people’s everyday experiences.

Before starting my doctoral study, I also worked as a lecturer at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia for two years. That experience strengthened my commitment to academia and helped me see more clearly why I wanted to pursue further training. I realized that to grow as a scholar, researcher, and educator, I needed deeper doctoral-level preparation, especially in research methods, theory development, academic writing, and international scholarly collaboration. These experiences eventually led me to pursue a Ph.D.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to The Pennsylvania State University?

I spent considerable time researching universities, departments, and faculty members whose research interests aligned with my own. Rather than focusing only on rankings, I paid close attention to program fit, mentorship opportunities, and the overall research environment.

I also carefully prepared application materials, including my statement of purpose, curriculum vitae, recommendation letters, and writing samples. Multiple rounds of revision and feedback helped strengthen my applications.

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Foreign Student Program and The Pennsylvania State University?

I relied primarily on official scholarship and university websites. I also learned from previous scholarship recipients and current graduate students who shared their experiences and insights about the application process.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes. I took the TOEFL iBT as part of the English proficiency requirement for the scholarship and graduate school application process. I also took the GRE, which was required at the time for submission to the university. For preparation, I tried to be consistent rather than rushing everything at the last minute. I familiarized myself with the test formats, practiced regularly, and gave myself enough time to feel more comfortable with each section. Preparing for standardized tests while also working on essays, recommendation letters, and university documents required a lot of planning, so starting early was very helpful. Looking back, I see standardized tests as only one part of the application. They matter because they are part of the requirement, but a strong application also needs a clear academic direction, strong essays, relevant experiences, recommendation letters, and a good fit with the program.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program?

I focused on developing a clear and authentic narrative about my academic interests, career goals, and reasons for pursuing doctoral training in the United States. Beyond academic qualifications, I reflected on how my goals aligned with the Fulbright Program's mission, which emphasizes educational exchange, mutual understanding, and meaningful contributions to society. I revised my essays multiple times and sought feedback from mentors and colleagues before submitting my application.

How is Your Experience at The Pennsylvania State University?

My experience at Penn State was both challenging and rewarding. Over the course of my doctoral program from Fall 2022 to Spring 2026, I completed coursework, comprehensive examinations, research projects, conference presentations, academic publications, and ultimately my dissertation. The experience allowed me to grow not only as a researcher but also as an individual. Living and studying in a different country broadened my perspective and exposed me to new ways of thinking, learning, and collaborating.

How Do You Rate The Pennsylvania State University Academically?

Penn State provided an excellent academic environment for doctoral training. I particularly appreciated the strong mentorship, interdisciplinary collaborations, research resources, and opportunities to engage with scholars from diverse backgrounds. The program challenged me intellectually while also supporting my development as an independent researcher.

How Does The Pennsylvania State University Support International Students?

Penn State offers numerous resources for international students, including orientation programs, immigration support services, academic resources, and student organizations. These resources help international students navigate both academic and practical aspects of life in the United States. Equally important, I found supportive mentors, colleagues, and friends who helped create a welcoming environment.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application presented a clear sense of purpose and direction. Rather than focusing solely on achievements, I tried to communicate why I was passionate about my field, what questions I hoped to pursue through research, and how doctoral training would help me contribute to academia and society. I also believe that having a coherent connection between my past experiences, current interests, and future goals strengthened my application.

Looking Back, Would You Have Done Anything Differently During Your Time in the Program?

If I could do the process again, I would begin preparing even earlier. Applications often require more time than expected, especially when writing essays and refining personal statements.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Start early and focus on developing a clear story about who you are, what you want to study, and why it matters. Scholarship applications are not only about academic achievements. Reviewers are also interested in your motivation, potential, goals, and how the opportunity fits into your broader aspirations. Be authentic, seek feedback, and do not be discouraged by setbacks along the way. Most importantly, do not count yourself out before applying. Many opportunities seem out of reach until you decide to give yourself a chance.
