The Journey

My name is Prarthana, and I am a Political Science student from India. I am currently pursuing my PhD at Sciences Po. I have always been curious about the relationship among individuals, society, and politics, which motivated me to do a Research Master’s and then a PhD.

France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship Details

I received the France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. This scholarship provides support to foreign students who are selected to pursue their education in French institutions. The recipient of the scholarship received a monthly living allowance (1181 euros in 2021-23), housing assistance, and a round-trip airfare ticket.

Educational Background

Before pursuing my Research Master's at Sciences Po, I completed my Bachelor’s in Political Science from Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Mumbai. My undergraduate degree allowed me to develop my academic pursuits, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Sciences Po?

How Did You Find Information About France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship and Sciences Po?

There was a session organised by Sciences Po at my undergraduate university about studying at Sciences Po. It was the first time I was introduced to Sciences Po and the scholarships that the institution and government offered. After the session, I dived into the internet rabbit hole about the scholarships.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

No, I did not take any standardised tests.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship?

The two documents that I had to submit for the scholarship were the CV and the professional project. For the CV, I edited it to highlight my strengths. The Professional project is an essay requiring you to elaborate on why you should be considered for the scholarship. I focused on writing a balanced essay that highlighted my future degree, career goals, and need for financial assistance.

How is Your Experience at Sciences Po?

I loved my Master’s program at Sciences Po. It was a big academic leap for me, and I had to work hard to keep up with my peers. The degree helped me to become a better researcher and formulate my thoughts articulately. It expanded my horizons of thinking.

How Do You Rate Sciences Po Academically?

The Research Master’s program at Sciences Po is very rigorous. I was trained in qualitative and quantitative methods of research along with subjects like comparative politics, political behaviour, and public policy.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or French?

The classes for my course were conducted in English.

What Did You Pursue After the France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship?

I am currently pursuing my PhD in Political Science at Sciences Po. After the scholarship, I was confident that I was ready for a PhD.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing French?

Academically, there will be no issues if the courses are in English. In day-to-day life, learning the language would always be an asset.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I feel that there is no formula to make an application stand out. There are three things that might help: good grades, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, and a well-written professional project (specific to the Eiffel scholarship). In the Professional project, I highlighted why I want to pursue this course at Sciences Po, why I want to study in France, and how it is linked with my future career goals.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were to go through the process all over again, I would ensure I start my application on time. Every institution has an early application deadline for potential candidates who want to be considered for the Eiffel scholarship.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

I would advise focusing on their grades and extracurricular activities during their studies. However, please do not take up activities for the sake of putting them on your CV. Use your formative years to understand what field/subject appeals to you the most. While applying, read the instructions carefully. For most scholarships, the application page clearly mentions what they are looking for in your essay. Make sure that you highlight your strengths in the application.
