In my case, I believe it was my IT experience and my paid Microsoft Azure certifications that pushed my points up the most.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the IELTS and scored 7.5 overall, with no band below 7.0 in any module.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Yes. During my bachelor's, I was offered a full scholarship for all four years of my undergraduate degree by the Moazzam Memorial Foundation in Pakistan. For my master's, the tuition-free status of the university effectively counts as a full tuition award.

I believe it was the combination of my IT experience and my paid Microsoft Azure certifications. In a point-based system, these were concrete, verifiable credentials that directly boosted my score rather than vague claims, which is exactly what the program rewards.

What Were Some of the Challenges You Faced as an International Student, Particularly Regarding Living Costs or Part-time Work Opportunities?

The language barrier was the biggest one, followed by the rising cost of living due to inflation/post-covid/ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, and lastly the hanging sword of visa/legal requirements, which came up on a yearly basis. On the plus side, I had the privilege of working during my studies with companies that contributed to my professional journey in domains like consulting, finance, physiotherapy, etc.

You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Program/scholarship?

This whole journey took a year of advance planning, so my biggest piece of advice is to start early when collecting your requirements. The better prepared and more complete your application is, the higher your chances of securing admission.

Looking Back, Would You Recommend Studying Here for International Students Seeking Affordable Higher Education? Why or Why Not?

The best part about this program (digital engineering at OVGU) is that it is extremely flexible and you can create your own profile as per what you want to pursue in your career. I wanted to push myself into Data & AI, so I chose subjects accordingly.

How is Your Experience at OVGU Magdeburg?

My experience was mixed overall – Good because of certain subjects, Average because of outdated curriculum in some subjects (things in the tech world are moving too fast, so a lot of things are becoming irrelevant)

How Do You Rate OVGU Magdeburg Academically?

I would rate it a 6 out of 10 (with institutions like TU Berlin/TUM rated at a 9 simply because of better curriculum, bigger cities/better opportunities for working to support yourself during studies, better alumni, and other important factors that are crucial).

How Does OVGU Magdeburg Support International Students?

They have an international office to address the concerns of foreign students, buddy/mentor programs, orientations for each semester, and language courses (but limited seats).

Is the Institution Free for Digital Engineering? If You Had to Pay Semester Fees, How Much Was It?

Yes, the program is tuition-free. Technically, there are no tuition fees, but you do pay a semester contribution of roughly €300–500, which covers things like your public transport pass, library access, and other student services.

Are Your Classes Conducted in English or German?

My program was conducted entirely in English.

I'm currently working as a Data Engineer/Analyst at myoact GmbH, a performance sports startup based in Frankfurt.

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing German?

Since my program was fully in English, German isn't required to succeed academically. That said, learning the local language is a must for daily life and integration, and I'll admit I'm still working on my own German. The good news is you're not expected to be fluent from day one, and people here understand that. How much that understanding shows up depends on where you are: in larger cities and among younger people, English is widely spoken and welcomed, whereas smaller towns and older residents tend to rely more on German.
