The Journey
My name is Ore-Oluwa Joseph Oluwatosin, a Yoruba boy from southwestern Nigeria. I completed my undergraduate degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Nigeria. I come from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State in the southwestern region of Nigeria. I am passionate about designing low-power, hardware-efficient architectures for robotics systems—a vision I've been building toward through research, hands-on engineering projects, and strategic scholarship opportunities.
I chose to pursue electrical engineering because I wanted to work at the intersection of power electronics, control systems, and ASIC design. The field appeals to me because it allows me to tackle real-world challenges—from energy harvesting for wearables to autonomous robotics—by combining rigorous theory with practical implementation. I completed my undergraduate thesis on piezoelectric energy harvesting (comparing materials like PZT-5H, PVDF, and PMN-PT across multiple circuit topologies) and led research and electronics initiatives at IEEE UNILAG as Technical Lead of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society chapter.
On the 4th of September 2026, I began the ARMAC Master's program (Advanced Robotics, Mechatronics, and Automatic Control) at Université Marie et Louis Pasteur (UMLP) in Besançon, France, as an Eiffel Scholarship recipient. This scholarship represents the culmination of a deliberate three-year strategy combining undergraduate excellence, international research exposure, and demonstrable commitment to advanced engineering.

International & Diverse Cohort: Bringing together brilliant engineering minds from across the globe creates a rich, multidisciplinary peer learning environment.
Limitations:
Like many rigorous French engineering-related programs, there is a steep initial adjustment curve regarding the pace of advanced mathematical modeling and independent project management, but the institutional support more than compensates for it.
Overall, UMLP provides an elite-tier academic foundation for anyone looking to push the boundaries of modern robotics and autonomous systems.
How Does Université Marie et Louis Pasteur Support International Students?
UMLP provides a structured, highly supportive landing framework for international students. Administrative offices, housing coordinators, and international student desks ensure a smooth transition into French life.
Being an Eiffel Scholar adds a unique layer of institutional backing—the monthly stipend and the prestige associated with the French Ministry's flagship scholarship signal strong institutional trust. The university and program coordinators actively foster an environment where international scholars are integrated into high-impact research projects right from day one, rather than feeling isolated.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or French?
Classes and coursework in the Master ARMAC program are conducted mostly in English; only the course for teaching us communication in French is currently conducted in French.
This is a tremendous strategic advantage for the international cohort. It allows us to dive deep into complex technical concepts—such as nonlinear control systems, embedded architectures, and advanced robotics kinematics—without linguistic bottlenecks.
At the same time, because I am living in Besançon, I am deliberately building my proficiency in French outside the classroom through local language ateliers at Maison des Quartiers (MDQ) Montrapon. This dual-track approach—studying advanced engineering in English while living and integrating locally in French—maximizes both my immediate academic performance and my long-term European career optionality.
What Did You Pursue After the France Excellence Eiffel Scholarship?
My post-Master's trajectory is structured around a detailed 10-year research and innovation roadmap:
- Immediate (Post-Master's / 2028 onwards): I aim to pursue a Ph.D. at a leading European or international research institution—targeting labs like FEMTO-ST here in Besançon, the RIGI Lab at Max Planck, KAUST, ETH Zurich, or EPFL.
- Long-Term Vision (5–10 years): My ultimate career goal is to spearhead the design of custom, low-power microarchitectures and neuromorphic hardware accelerators for intelligent robotic systems, bridging academic research leadership with high-tech industry innovation.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing French?
Short Answer: Yes, there would be challenges, but they are surmountable with commitment.
The ARMAC Master's at UMLP is taught primarily in French (80–90% of lectures, tutorials, assignments, and exams).
Challenges for Non-French Speakers:
• Lecture comprehension of specialized technical vocabulary
• Active participation in tutorials and seminars
• Reading assignments in French textbooks and research papers
• Written exams and assignments in French
• Social integration with classmates
Mitigating Factors & Support:
• UMLP provides French language courses through the Language Center
• Professors are willing to clarify concepts and provide extended time for exams
• Other international students provide peer study groups
• Many engineering resources exist in English or have translations
Honest Assessment: A student without any French would likely struggle significantly in Semester 1. But with B1–B2 proficiency and commitment to improvement, it is entirely feasible to succeed.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
Several factors combined to make my application competitive:
1. Coherent, Ambitious Narrative Arc
Year 1: Build strong EE foundations while identifying research passion → Year 2: Secure French + Sciences scholarship → FEMTO-ST research internship → Year 3: Thesis work → apply for Eiffel → transition to Master's. This progression demonstrates strategic planning.
2. Demonstrated Research Capability
Five-month FEMTO-ST internship with documented outputs; undergraduate thesis combining COMSOL multiphysics, experimental design, and hardware prototyping; publications in progress. This signals readiness for Master's-level research.
3. Clear Alignment Between Candidate & Program
I chose ARMAC specifically: my energy harvesting and motor control research directly feeds into the robotics curriculum. Specificity signals serious commitment.
4. International Experience & Cultural Fit
The French + Sciences scholarship (2024) demonstrated I could succeed in French academic environments. This prior French exposure made me a lower risk for the committee.
5. Leadership & Communication Skills
IEEE Technical Lead, mentor role, peer webinars, technical communication. Eiffel values future ambassadors and leaders.
6. Long-Term Vision
Clear 10-year roadmap: Master's → PhD (ASIC design for robotics) → Research leadership. This vision is specific and ambitious.
7. Diversity & Geographical Representation
As an African (Nigerian) student applying to a French scholarship aimed at promoting international collaboration, I represented the geographic diversification Eiffel seeks.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
Honestly, I would do very little differently. My strategy was deliberate, and each step prepared me well for the next.
One Thing I Might Have Done Differently:
Begin writing my Statement of Purpose even earlier (by the end of Year 2). A more refined statement could have strengthened an already strong application.
Why I Wouldn't Change the Core Strategy:
My approach—grounding applications in genuine research achievements rather than just credentials—was sound. This authenticity came through and resonated with the committee.
