Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

N/A. I did not receive a separate scholarship for the program. However, the Master’s program at the University of Bonn did not charge tuition fees. I was only required to pay a semester contribution, which covered administrative services and included a public transportation ticket. This made the program significantly more affordable than comparable programs in many other countries.

What Drew You to Choose This Country to Pursue Your Degree?

Germany’s commitment to accessible higher education was one of the first factors that attracted me. Even as an international student, I could study at a highly regarded public university without paying tuition fees.

As I explored my options further, I became increasingly interested in Germany’s research environment, modern scientific infrastructure and strong expertise in plant and agricultural sciences. What Were Some of the Challenges You Faced as an International Student, Particularly Regarding Living Costs or Part-Time Work Opportunities?

I was fortunate that my family could support me financially during my Master’s degree. My total living expenses were approximately €20,000 over two years, although the actual cost will depend on factors such as accommodation, lifestyle and inflation.

I also worked part-time as a laboratory assistant at the university. This provided additional income while allowing me to gain relevant professional experience in an academic environment.

One of the more significant challenges for many international students is social integration. Developing a social circle can require time and active effort, particularly when moving to a country with a different language and culture. German is generally not essential for an English-taught degree, but even basic language skills can make everyday communication, administrative procedures and social interactions considerably easier.

Looking Back, Would You Recommend Studying Here for International Students Seeking Affordable Higher Education? Why or Why Not?

Yes, I would recommend Germany to international students seeking high-quality and comparatively affordable higher education. Public universities offer strong academic programs, modern research facilities, and opportunities to gain practical experience without charging high tuition fees.

However, students should prepare carefully for living expenses, accommodation challenges and administrative procedures. Learning some German and researching the program, city and financial requirements in advance can make the transition much smoother.

How is Your Experience at the University of Bonn?

My experience at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Botany has been highly valuable. The Master’s program allowed me to learn from experienced researchers, develop practical laboratory skills, and explore several areas of plant science before selecting my specialisation.

The supportive research environment also enabled me to continue directly into a PhD position after completing my Master’s degree. This continuity has allowed me to build deeper expertise in molecular plant physiology and strengthen my skills in experimental research, scientific communication and project management.

I would rate the University of Bonn 8.5 out of 10 academically. It offers excellent facilities and practical training opportunities for students interested in plant sciences, molecular biology and agriculture. Students can also participate in workshops, international events and professional-development programs that support communication, networking and transferable skills. Students enrolled in an English-taught program should generally not face significant academic difficulties if they do not speak German. Lectures, examinations, assignments, and scientific communication within the program are conducted in English.
