How I Secured a Fully Funded Master's at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, United States Through the Fulbright Scholarship

Hello! My name is Juanfra, and I am from a small town in Extremadura, Spain. I am passionate about nature and have always enjoyed appreciating every living organism, from the tiniest beetle to the Iberian lynx. This curiosity led me to develop a strong interest in biodiversity. I remember that environmental disasters, such as oil spills and wildfires, really impacted me while I was in high school, as well as reading about the Iberian lynx being on the brink of extinction, and I found myself wondering how it was possible that a species could disappear forever. For this reason, I decided to study biology and learn about conservation and ecological restoration practices. Since then, I have dedicated my efforts to raising awareness of our incredible biodiversity and the importance of protecting it.

I received a Fulbright Scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Botany at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. My scholarship covered full tuition, cost of living, and medical insurance.

Educational Background

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Córdoba, in southern Spain, graduating with a GPA of 8.4/10. I later pursued a Master's degree in Island Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, Canary Islands. Studying in Tenerife sparked my fascination with islands. I was impressed by the beauty of its volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and coastal environments, which strengthened my interest in biodiversity and conservation. As part of this master's program, I conducted my thesis research at the University of the Azores in Portugal. I believe this international experience played an important role in helping me secure this scholarship. Living and studying abroad allowed me to improve my English skills, adapt to new environments, and develop independence and more interest in finding more academic opportunities in different countries.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa?

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Scholarship and University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa?

Spain has a youth organization called the “Instituto de la Juventud”, which shares a wide range of opportunities for young people. I regularly checked the youth portal of my region, the “Instituto de la Juventud de Extremadura”, and was impressed by the number of scholarships, programs, and opportunities it advertised. I would highly recommend these platforms to any Spanish student looking for scholarships.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

I took both the TOEFL and GRE as part of the admission and scholarship application process. To prepare for the TOEFL, I practiced with many sample exams. The GRE was more challenging because I was unfamiliar with the test format, so I focused on completing many practice tests, learning from my mistakes, watching YouTube tutorials, and using the General GRE preparation book, especially for the math section.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

The scholarship application consisted of two phases. The first involved submitting a CV and a project proposal, the universities I had selected, and the reasons for my choices. To prepare, I watched many YouTube videos from previous scholars, who described their experiences and tips for applications, and researched the Fulbright Program and its objectives. In my proposal, I focused on biodiversity loss and its impacts in both Spain and the United States and did a lot of research about the Universities I was interested in. The second phase was an interview. To prepare, I practiced my presentation several times on my own, with friends, and with an English teacher who helped me improve my vocabulary, communication skills, and confidence.

How is Your Experience at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa?

It was truly an incredible experience. Thanks to this opportunity, I learned a lot about Hawaiian unique biodiversity, the culture, the importance of decolonizing science, and ongoing efforts to protect nature. I also gained valuable insight into academic and professional opportunities in the United States and connected with many outstanding researchers and colleagues. The university campus is incredibly beautiful, and my experience was further enriched by living at the East-West Center as a scholar. There, I had the opportunity to learn more about the diverse cultures of the Pacific region and connect with many inspiring people from around the world.

From my experience, the University of Hawaiʻi has a strong system of support for international students; they are very well organized and always willing to help.

What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Scholarship?

After the scholarship, I continued studying biodiversity in the Pacific by pursuing a PhD at Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, where I am currently researching plant-animal interactions.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe what made my application stand out was taking the time to become familiar with the scholarship program and aligning its goals with my own. I also think reading successful application examples and learning from the experiences of previous scholars helped me a lot, especially in presenting my objectives clearly.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have liked to start the application process earlier and spend more time researching the universities I was interested in.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My first advice would be to be clear about the path you want to follow and why. Having a sense of direction makes it much easier to communicate your goals throughout the application and interview. I would also encourage applicants to reach out to others, like professors or previous scholars, and ask questions. Finally, practice your interviews until you feel comfortable, and ask others to review your application materials and listen to your project ideas and interview practice.
