The Journey
My name is Jayanth, and I am from India. I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering in Pune, India, and I have always been passionate about robotics, automation, and control systems. This interest motivated me to pursue a Master’s degree in Control Systems Engineering.
I chose the University of Padova because of its strong Department of Information Engineering and its reputation in the field of control engineering and automation. The university offered courses and research opportunities that closely matched my interests, particularly in robotics and advanced control systems.
Invest Your Talent in Italy Details
I received the Invest Your Talent in Italy (IYT) scholarship, offered by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), for my Master’s studies in Italy.
The scholarship provided €1,000 per month for nine months each year, for two years, covering almost all expenses of my Master’s program.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Symbiosis Skills and Professional University in Pune, India, graduating with a CGPA of 8.92/10.
During my bachelor’s degree, I developed a strong interest in robotics, automation, and control systems. My final-year project focused on a smart electric bicycle, which gave me practical experience in combining mechanical, electrical, and control concepts. This multidisciplinary background in mechatronics provided a strong foundation for pursuing a master’s degree in Control Systems Engineering.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Padova?
How Did You Find Information About Invest Your Talent in Italy and University of Padova?
I used university websites, scholarship portals, and platforms such as QS Rankings to research universities and identify suitable scholarship opportunities. I also reached out to students and graduates through LinkedIn to learn about their experiences and get a better understanding of the universities and application processes.
I also attended a webinar conducted by the University of Padova, which helped me better understand the university, the Master’s program, and the scholarship opportunities available to international students.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I took the IELTS exam as proof of English proficiency. I prepared independently using YouTube resources, preparation books, and practice tests. I also participated in an online learning community where I could practice different sections of the exam and improve my overall English proficiency.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Invest Your Talent in Italy?
I initially prepared a general cover letter that highlighted my academic background, achievements, interests, and motivation. I then tailored it for each scholarship and university to make sure it was relevant to the specific program and selection criteria.
In my applications, I highlighted not only my academic achievements but also my extracurricular activities and charity work during my bachelor’s degree. I wanted to demonstrate my motivation for the field as well as my interests and experiences outside academics.
For the IYT scholarship, a video application was required. I prepared and edited a video in which I talked about my motivation for studying in Italy, my academic and professional interests, and some of my extracurricular activities. I tried to make the video more personal rather than focusing only on my academic achievements.
How is Your Experience at the University of Padova?
My experience at the University of Padova was very good. The professors were experienced and supportive, and the university provided good resources, including laboratories, computer facilities, and libraries.
There was a learning curve at the beginning as I had to adapt to a new education system and a different academic environment. However, both students and professors were very helpful throughout the process.
How Do You Rate the University of Padova Academically?
I would rate the University of Padova 9/10 academically. I particularly appreciated the quality and experience of the professors, the variety of subjects offered, and the structure of the examinations.
Another aspect I really valued was the flexibility to choose courses and shape my study plan according to my interests. This allowed me to focus on areas of control engineering and robotics that I was particularly interested in.
How Does the University of Padova Support International Students?
The University of Padova offers several scholarships and financial opportunities specifically for international students. The university also organizes events and orientation activities at the beginning of the academic year, which help international students adapt to their new environment.
Another useful resource is the availability of free language courses, which can help international students learn Italian and communicate more comfortably in everyday life.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Italian?
My master’s program was conducted entirely in English.
Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Not Knowing Italian?
For an English-taught Master’s program, not knowing Italian should not be a major academic problem. My courses were conducted in English, and I was able to communicate with professors and fellow international students without significant difficulties.
However, learning some Italian is very useful for everyday life outside the university, particularly when dealing with administrative procedures, accommodation, transportation, and communication with local people. I would recommend that international students learn at least the basics of the language.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I think one aspect that made my application different was that I tried to present myself as more than just my academic achievements.
For example, in my scholarship video, I showed some of my extracurricular interests. At one point, I was solving a Rubik’s Cube while talking about my interest in problem-solving. I also included my experience volunteering with an NGO and participating in charity activities.
I wanted the selection committee to understand my personality, interests, and motivation rather than simply seeing a list of grades and academic achievements. I believe showing these different aspects of myself helped make my application more personal and memorable.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were applying again, I would try to become more involved in extracurricular activities and would also look for opportunities to work on research projects or publish a paper or article with professors at my home university.
I think having a stronger combination of academic achievements, research experience, and extracurricular activities would have made my profile even more well-rounded.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My biggest advice would be to be genuine and honest in your application. Academic achievements are important, but try to show the committee who you are beyond your grades.
Think about what makes your journey, interests, or experiences unique and find a way to communicate that clearly. Even small things that reflect your personality, such as extracurricular activities, volunteering, personal projects, or interests, can help make your application more memorable.
I would also recommend starting the process early, researching the scholarship requirements carefully, and tailoring your application rather than sending exactly the same material to every university or scholarship. Most importantly, don't be afraid to show your motivation and explain why this particular program, university, and opportunity are important to you.
