The Journey
My name is Franco Yannielli, and I am an English teacher from Chaco, a province in northern Argentina. Throughout my career, I have always believed that education has the power to connect people, cultures, and opportunities. That belief is what first led me to study English teaching and, later, motivated me to pursue international academic experiences that would allow me to grow both professionally and personally.
I earned my teaching degree in English in Argentina and began working as an English teacher in 2016. While teaching at different educational levels, I developed a strong interest in language education, intercultural communication, and teacher professional development. Those interests eventually inspired me to apply for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, a highly competitive scholarship sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. Receiving the Fulbright scholarship completely changed my academic and professional journey.
Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Details
I was awarded the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Through this scholarship, I spent the 2021–2022 academic year in the United States, where I served as a Spanish Language Teaching Assistant at Westtown School in Pennsylvania. The scholarship covered tuition, housing, meals, health insurance, international travel, and provided a monthly stipend to support living expenses throughout the program.
For me, the value of the scholarship went far beyond financial support. It opened the door to an extraordinary professional, academic, and cultural experience that continues to shape my career today.
Educational Background
My academic journey has always been driven by a commitment to continuous learning. I completed my English Teacher degree in Argentina, which provided a strong foundation in language teaching, linguistics, literature, and pedagogy. After participating in the Fulbright FLTA Program, I continued my studies in the United States and earned a Master of Arts in Teaching Spanish from Northern Arizona University, graduating with Honors. Currently, I am pursuing a second master's degree in Applied Linguistics for English Language Teaching at the Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina. In addition, I have completed several postgraduate diploma programs in educational leadership, intercultural education, international relations, educational inclusion, emotional education, and digital literacy. Looking back, every stage of my education prepared me for the Fulbright application. My teaching experience demonstrated my commitment to education, while my academic background showed that I was eager to continue learning and contributing to my profession.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Westtown School?
Preparing my application required months of careful planning. I researched the objectives of the Fulbright Program, reviewed previous recipients' experiences, and carefully prepared every component of my application. I wanted my application to clearly reflect not only my academic qualifications but also my passion for language education and cultural exchange. Since the FLTA Program places a strong emphasis on intercultural understanding, I also reflected on how I could represent Argentina while learning from American educational practices.

How Did You Find Information About the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant and Westtown School?
I first learned about the Fulbright FLTA Program through the Fulbright Commission in Argentina. From there, I regularly followed their website and official communications, attended informational sessions, and carefully read the application guidelines. I also searched for advice from previous Fulbright participants, whose experiences helped me better understand the selection process and prepare a stronger application. My advice is to rely primarily on official scholarship websites and verified sources of information. They provide the most accurate and up-to-date guidance throughout the application process.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
Yes. As part of the Fulbright FLTA application process, I was required to take the TOEFL iBT. The program required applicants to achieve a minimum score of 80 to be considered for the scholarship. Although I had already been teaching English for several years, I dedicated time to preparing specifically for the TOEFL format and the skills it assesses, including academic reading, listening, speaking, and writing. In addition to preparing for the TOEFL, I also practiced extensively for the Fulbright interview, since effective communication and the ability to discuss my teaching philosophy, professional goals, and cultural experiences were essential parts of the selection process. Successfully meeting the English language requirement gave me the confidence to teach, study, and collaborate in an entirely English-speaking academic environment throughout my Fulbright experience
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant?
The scholarship application required much more than completing forms. I invested significant time in preparing my personal statement, requesting strong recommendation letters, organizing all the required documentation, and reflecting on my professional goals. One of the most important aspects of my application was demonstrating consistency. My teaching experience, academic preparation, volunteer work, and commitment to education all supported the same story: I wanted to become a better educator and use international experience to benefit students and teachers in my home country.
How is Your Experience at Westtown School?
My experience exceeded every expectation. At Westtown School, I taught Spanish language and culture to students from different grade levels and collaborated closely with experienced educators. I also had the opportunity to teach substitute classes, participate in extracurricular activities, accompany students during educational trips, and become actively involved in the school community. Beyond the classroom, I took undergraduate courses related to TESOL, applied linguistics, and American literature, which broadened my understanding of language education from multiple perspectives. Living in an international boarding school also allowed me to interact daily with students and educators from many different countries, making intercultural learning part of everyday life.
How Do You Rate Westtown School Academically?
Academically, I would rate Westtown School very highly. The institution encourages critical thinking, student-centered learning, and meaningful teacher collaboration. I was particularly impressed by the level of student engagement, the flexibility teachers had in designing learning experiences, and the strong emphasis placed on inclusion and global citizenship.
How Does Westtown School Support International Students?
Westtown School created an environment in which international students felt welcomed and supported from the very beginning. Faculty members were always approachable, and the school provided numerous opportunities for cultural exchange, leadership, and community involvement. This supportive atmosphere made it easier to adapt to a new educational system and culture.
Are Your Classes Conducted in English or Spanish?
Yes. Most of my university coursework and professional interactions were conducted entirely in English, while my teaching responsibilities involved teaching Spanish language and culture. This bilingual environment significantly strengthened both my academic English and my professional communication skills.
What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant?
The Fulbright experience became the foundation for everything that followed. After completing the FLTA Program, I earned my master's degree in the United States and returned to Argentina, where I continue teaching English in higher education. Today, I teach undergraduate and teacher education courses, coordinate institutional professional development workshops, participate in educational research, and continue my graduate studies in applied linguistics. My goal is to contribute to improving English language education while promoting intercultural understanding through teaching, research, and teacher training.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it presented a coherent professional story rather than simply listing achievements. Throughout my application, I demonstrated a consistent commitment to education, language teaching, cultural exchange, and lifelong learning. My teaching experience, academic preparation, volunteer work, and enthusiasm for representing Argentina abroad all reinforced that commitment. I also tried to be authentic. Instead of focusing only on accomplishments, I explained how the scholarship would help me grow as an educator and how I hoped to contribute to my community after returning home.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were applying again, I would probably begin preparing even earlier. Although my application was successful, starting sooner would have given me additional time to refine my essays, request recommendation letters, and prepare for the interview process with less pressure.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My biggest piece of advice is to remember that scholarships are not awarded only to candidates with perfect academic records. Selection committees look for people who demonstrate purpose, commitment, leadership, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.
Start preparing early. Read every instruction carefully. Seek feedback on your application materials. Most importantly, be authentic. Your experiences, motivations, and future goals should tell one consistent story.
Finally, don't be discouraged if the process feels competitive. Every application is an opportunity to reflect on your journey and your aspirations. The effort you invest in preparing a strong application will benefit you regardless of the final outcome.
