How I Secured a Fully Funded PhD at the University of Colorado Boulder, United States Through the Fulbright Chile Scholarship

My name is Erick Gatica Candia, and I am originally from Chile. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) in the United States. My research focuses on laser-based sensors, optical diagnostics, and combustion systems for hydrogen and natural gas applications.

Growing up in Chile, I was always fascinated by science and engineering because of their potential to solve some of the world's most pressing energy and environmental challenges. In addition to that, I have been a big fan of the space race since I was a teenager. This interest led me to pursue both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH). During my graduate studies, I became involved in research related to energy systems, process modeling, thermal sciences, and teaching, which ultimately inspired me to pursue doctoral studies abroad. I think teaching is one of the most powerful and important roles in the world; the concept of legacy made me chase the possibility of becoming a faculty member. In addition to that, my goal is to create real-impact technology for the world in the most challenging problems and the most exciting fields related to light manipulation.

Studying in the United States had long been a personal and professional goal. I was looking for a research environment where I could work with leading experts, access state-of-the-art laboratories, and contribute to technological developments with real-world impact. The University of Colorado Boulder offered exactly that opportunity; I work daily with really smart people who inspire me to keep growing.

Fulbright Chile Scholarship Details

I was awarded the Fulbright Chile Scholarship, Equal Opportunity Program (Programa Igualdad de Oportunidades) to pursue my Ph.D. studies at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The Fulbright Equal Opportunity Scholarship is designed to promote educational access and academic excellence by supporting talented Chilean students who demonstrate strong academic potential and leadership, as well as those who had no parents who went to college and only attended public schools growing up. Receiving this scholarship was a life-changing opportunity because it enabled me to pursue graduate studies at one of the leading research universities in the United States while representing Chile within the global Fulbright community. I found the scholarship when I was scrolling down on Instagram, which does not sound like the most reliable method, but surprisingly was the right channel for me, social medias have a lot of critics, but I think they are also a powerful tool these days.

The Fulbright scholarship that I won provided funding for tuition, travel support to come to Colorado for the first time, a pre-academic program for improving my English skills at Drexel University, and other educational costs associated with pursuing a doctoral degree abroad.

On the other hand, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder gives me a stipend because of my Research Assistant Position at the Precision Laser Diagnostic Laboratory for Energy and the Environment.

Related to my background and how I ended up applying, I completed both my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and Master of Science in Chemical Engineering at the University of Santiago of Chile (USACH).

My academic training provided a strong foundation in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, process simulation, mathematical modeling, and energy systems. During my master's studies, I conducted research on drying processes and desalination technologies utilizing solar energy and phase change materials, gaining valuable experience in experimental work, numerical modeling, scientific writing, and research project development.

In addition to my coursework, I worked on research projects, collaborated with faculty members, and participated in scientific publications and presentations. These experiences helped prepare me for the demands of doctoral-level research and strengthened my competitiveness as an international applicant. At the end of my master's program back in Chile, I had 3 scientific publications.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to University of Colorado Boulder?

For my application for the scholarship. My first step was identifying research areas that genuinely interested me rather than selecting schools based solely on rankings, because these can be biased, and one of the best programs for specific fields is not in the top universities of many international rankings. I carefully reviewed faculty websites, recent publications, laboratory projects, and graduate program requirements; in addition, I requested to talk with PhD students from the different research groups to get to know the lab culture in the programs.

How Did You Find Information About University of Colorado Boulder? Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? How Did You Prepare for Them?

I discovered the University of Colorado Boulder through my search for research groups working on energy systems and Hydrogen technologies. The work being conducted in the Precision Laser Diagnostics Laboratory aligned closely with my interests, and the laser field was something that captured my attention.

As part of the application process, I completed the required English proficiency examinations by taking the TOEFL exam; the cost was paid by the scholarship.

I prepared by following a structured study plan, taking practice exams, and focusing on improving my academic English skills, particularly speaking and writing. Consistency was much more important than studying intensively for a short period. Every day I would study from a book; I set my phone, laptop, and everything to English; I listened to the New York Times daily podcast every day, and I went to a website like Free4Talk to be able to practice my speaking.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

For my essays in the application, I focused on explaining not only what I had accomplished but also why those experiences mattered and how studying abroad would allow me to contribute back to Chile and build a strong connection with the US as myself as the bridge. I believe scholarship committees want to see applicants with both academic potential and a clear vision for the future. I had an interview with members of the scholarship program and faculty from Chile and the US.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe several factors contributed to the success of my application.

First, I had a clear connection between my previous academic experiences and my future research goals. I participated in a Hydrogen energy association for students, and I had a clear understanding of energy systems fundamentals. Every step of my educational journey, from chemical engineering to energy systems research and finally combustion diagnostics, built toward my doctoral research interests. I would say that I did not expect to be in the field of laser research, but that was part of the journey, and as someone who loves science and learning, getting to know a whole new research field has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life.

Second, I had significant research experience before applying. I had already worked on research projects, collaborated with professors, and developed technical skills that demonstrated my readiness for doctoral studies. In addition to that, I had experience as a teaching assistant during college and as a professor for two Chilean universities.

Third, I communicated a clear vision of how advanced training in the United States would allow me to contribute to scientific research, education, and technological development in Chile. The possible connection that you can build between the US and your country is a top priority in the selection of candidates for Fulbright scholarships

Finally, I believe the Fulbright committee recognized my commitment to academic excellence, my research potential, and my willingness to use the opportunities provided by the scholarship to create a broader impact beyond my own personal goals.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My biggest piece of advice is to start early and believe that you are a competitive candidate. In these kinds of applications, there are a lot of super capable people, so the first step is to believe that you are also one of them.

Many students underestimate themselves and decide not to apply because they think only perfect applicants are selected. In reality, Scholarship committees evaluate the complete person, including academic achievements, research experience, leadership potential, resilience, future goals, and, I would say, even your personality.

I would recommend:

• Building research or professional experience whenever possible. Try to collaborate with professors during your major program to do research activities.
• Developing strong relationships with mentors and professors because at some point you will need letters of recommendation, and you want to get those from someone who knows you, your skills, and your capacities.
•  Preparing for English proficiency exams well in advance. In a competitive application that will be one of the filters, and I wish I knew that earlier.
• Carefully tailoring application essays. This is where you have to shine; think about a great introduction because the first couple of sentences will define how reviewers think about you.
• Seeking feedback from previous scholarship recipients. I did this by connecting with people on LinkedIn; that’s a great method to ask for advice from people sometime was in the same position as you!
• Applying even if you feel uncertain about your chances. It is better to apply and be rejected than doubting if you ever could have gotten it!

The Fulbright Equal Opportunity Scholarship changed my life and opened doors that otherwise would not have been possible. For students considering graduate studies abroad, my message is simple: be persistent, prepare thoroughly, and do not be afraid to pursue ambitious goals; aim for the Moon, and you will reach for the stars!. Opportunities often begin with the decision to apply.
