The Journey

My name is Dr. Yiota Gregoriou. I am from Cyprus, and my academic and research path has taken me from Cyprus to Canada and later to the United States. I began my studies with a Pre-Medical Diploma and then moved to Canada, where I completed a BSc in Chemistry at Saint Mary’s University in Nova Scotia. During my undergraduate studies, I became interested in research and in the ways chemistry could be applied to biomedical sciences. This led me to pursue a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. During my PhD, I was introduced to nanotechnology and began studying how nanoscale systems move, interact, and behave in biological environments. I was particularly interested in how their physical and chemical properties, such as size, composition, and surface characteristics, can affect their function. This shaped the direction of my research and led me to continue working in the area of engineering and testing nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems, eventually contributing to the development of a patented invention for Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I chose to pursue further research in this field because it allowed me to work at the interface of chemistry, biology, and medicine. It was also a field where I could apply my scientific training to questions with clear relevance to disease, delivery, and therapeutic development.

Fulbright Grant Details

The scholarship that had the greatest impact on my research journey was the Fulbright Grant, awarded through the Embassy of the United States of America for the 2021/2022 academic year. The scholarship allowed me to conduct research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, one of the world’s leading cancer research institutions.

During the Fulbright visit, I carried out extensive characterization of my patented nanoparticle invention and performed further animal studies to better understand its behavior, biodistribution, and potential as a drug delivery platform. This work strengthened the scientific evidence behind the invention, contributed to publications, helped support additional funding opportunities, and moved the project closer to future translational and commercial development.

The grant supported a four-month research visit and included international travel, a maintenance allowance, a settling-in allowance, a professional development allowance, a dependent allowance, and medical insurance.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

Before the Fulbright Grant, I was also awarded several scholarships and academic distinctions, including an award as the top Pre-Medicine student and various graduate scholarships during my PhD studies at the University of Calgary.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center?

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes. As part of my preparation for studying abroad, I took several standardized examinations. I completed GCE O Levels in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, English, and Physics, and GCE A Levels in Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, and Greek Literature. I also took the SAT I, SAT II, and TOEFL examinations. My preparation was based mainly on consistent study, past papers, and building a strong foundation in the core science subjects. The O Levels and A Levels helped me develop discipline and confidence in science, while the SAT and TOEFL were important for applying to institutions abroad. I would advise students to start preparing early, practise with past papers or sample exams, and become familiar with the format of each test before sitting the exam.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Grant?

To apply for the scholarship, I prepared and submitted a detailed proposal/application through the online application system. After the initial evaluation, my application was shortlisted, and I was invited to attend an interview with a selection committee. Following the interview and final evaluation process, I was informed that I had been selected to receive the Fulbright grant.

How is Your Experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center?

My experience at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was very positive. Being hosted by such a renowned institution gave me access to the services, expertise, and advanced instrumentation needed to rapidly evaluate and further validate the patented nanovehicle. The people in the laboratory were welcoming, supportive, and very helpful, which allowed me to integrate smoothly, carry out the planned research activities efficiently, and make the most of the Fulbright experience.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because it was based on an innovative invention with a clear and important application in triple-negative breast cancer. The project was focused, translational, and connected to a real medical need, which I believe made it stronger and more meaningful. I also tried to approach the interview with honesty and confidence, explaining why the project was important to me and how I hoped it could contribute meaningfully in the future. What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My advice to anyone considering applying for a similar scholarship would be to give it a try, even if the process feels competitive. Prepare your application as carefully as possible, make sure your proposal is clear and well structured, and take time to understand how your work fits the goals of the scholarship. In my case, having a letter of invitation from the host institution was also very important, because it showed that the project had a clear research home and that there was support for the proposed work. During the interview, try to be honest, genuine, and yourself. A strong application is important, but it is also important to communicate your motivation clearly and sincerely.
