The Journey

My name is Dr. Dina Elsayed, and I am originally from Egypt. After gaining invaluable hands-on experience working within the government sector in Egypt, I realized I wanted to complement my practical knowledge with a rigorous academic foundation. This led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Development and Governance, a field uniquely positioned at the intersection of policy, institutional design, and international cooperation.

  • Funding Scope: Full scholarship covering tuition, travel, monthly living stipends, health insurance, and a mandatory preparatory language course.
  • Other Offers: N/A - The DAAD program was my primary target

Educational & Professional Background

Before moving to Germany, I completed my undergraduate studies and a master’s degree in Egypt and immediately stepped into the public sector. Working within governance structures gave me a front-row seat to the developmental challenges facing the region. My academic background, combined with real-world public policy experience, perfectly aligned with the prerequisites of the Master's program. It allowed me to approach the application not just as a student wanting a degree, but as a practitioner seeking precise theoretical tools to solve complex governance issues.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

The application process for the DAAD scholarship was incredibly structured. The online information provided on the official DAAD portal was comprehensive, outlining clear deadlines, eligibility guidelines, and document requirements. Because the Master’s program was conducted entirely in English, proving language proficiency was a standard requirement, which I did not need to sit for as the language of instruction for my undergraduate degree was in English which was sufficient proof.

Cost of Studying

Higher education in Germany is highly subsidized, and the university itself did not charge standard international tuition fees for this program. Students only pay a minor nominal semester fee (covering student union services and public transit passes). The DAAD scholarship generously covered these expenses alongside my day-to-day costs of living.

Language & Integration

While my Master’s classes were taught in English, the DAAD scholarship recognized that true integration requires local language skills. A key highlight of my scholarship was a 6-month intensive German language course prior to the start of the academic year. Learning German was essential; it made daily life easier, helped me navigate the country with confidence, and allowed me to truly connect with the local culture.

Institutional Support

Arriving in a new country can be overwhelming, but being a DAAD scholar made the transition seamless. We received guidance on logistical matters right from the start, from securing accommodation and opening bank accounts to navigating the residency permit process.

Practical Experience

A core, invaluable component of the Master’s program at the University of Duisburg-Essen was a two-month mandatory internship. This was a brilliant gateway into the professional world of Germany, allowing me to observe European organizational culture from the inside.

What Did You Pursue After the DAAD Scholarship?

The Master’s degree transformed my career trajectory. Driven by the research environment in Germany, I decided to pursue a PhD in Political Science at the very same institution: the University of Duisburg-Essen. Because I self-funded my doctoral studies, I returned to Egypt to work full-time while traveling to Germany twice a year to meet with my professor, attend academic colloquiums, and present my dissertation progress.

During the final year of my PhD, I relocated back to Germany to focus entirely on my dissertation and took on a role as a Teaching Assistant. I was tasked with co-teaching one of the DAAD Master's courses. It was an incredibly emotional and proud full-circle moment: just a few years prior, I had been sitting in those exact classroom chairs as an international student. Now, I stood at the front of the lecture hall, mentoring the next generation of global DAAD scholars.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe my application stood out because of the clear, logical connection between my past work experience, my academic goals, and my future vision. I didn't just ask for a scholarship; I demonstrated how a degree in Development and Governance would directly complement my government work in Egypt and allow me to make a tangible impact.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

  1. Be Organized: DAAD is highly systematic. Start preparing your documents, letters of recommendation, and motivation essays months in advance of the deadline.
  2. Bridge Theory and Practice: Clearly articulate why you need this specific degree. Show how your background prepares you for it, and how you intend to utilize the knowledge afterward.
  3. Embrace the Culture: If you get the scholarship, utilize the language training fully. Learning the native language is the single best tool for making a foreign country feel like home.
