The Journey
I am Dorji Wangchuk from the Kingdom of Bhutan. As a small developing nation, education is recognized as the single most critical driver for sustainable progress. My academic journey began when I received a government scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Economics at the University of New England. After graduating, I chose to give back by becoming an economics teacher.
In the classroom, as I taught concepts like economic efficiency and GDP growth, I realized that these standard indicators don’t capture the full human experience. Because Bhutan’s development is uniquely guided by the philosophy of Gross National Happiness, I felt compelled to understand how economic systems can become more holistic and deliberate. To bridge this gap between theory and well-being, I pursued a Master’s degree in Sustainable International Development at Brandeis University in Boston, Massachusetts.
Fulbright Scholarship Details
Another major milestone in my professional journey came in 2024, when I was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue an accelerated Master’s degree. Due to the competitive nature of the program, Brandeis University granted me a 70% tuition waiver, and the Fulbright Program fully funded the rest. This all-inclusive fellowship provided full medical insurance, a monthly living stipend of about $2,400, and generous allowances to cover my international travel, textbooks, and computer equipment.
Educational Background
My transition to undergraduate education in Australia was a profound learning experience. I arrived as the top-ranked student nationally in the Arts stream for my Year12 board examinations in Bhutan. However, adapting to tertiary education in a Western academic system was so challenging. My first-semester grades fell short of my personal standards, averaging in the 60s. However, I quickly adapted my approach. From the second semester onward, I significantly improved my performance, earning Distinctions and High Distinctions. My final GPA was 5.76 out of 7, which is 3.3 on a 4.0 scale.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Brandeis University?
I initially discovered the Fulbright Scholarship through a global professional development group called ‘Opportunity Circle.
At the time, I did not have the standard test scores, so I was looking for international programs that did not require standardized test scores upfront. Fulbright was an ideal match. Of course, we need to submit a Statement of Purpose, a short essay describing the field of study, a work sample, and three referees.
After passing the initial application screening and shortlist phase, I was invited for the final selection interview. Once selected, the Institute of International Education (IIE) provided vouchers for the required English proficiency and GRE tests.
To stay proactive, I actually took the IELTS during my summer break, and the score was successfully accepted. Preparing for the GRE was highly demanding, especially alongside my other commitments. While my GRE score was not as high as I had hoped due to the compressed preparation timeline, the selection committee heavily weighed the holistic strength of my application. A few months later, the process concluded successfully when I received my official university placement and final admission emails.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?
To be honest, knowing how competitive and prestigious the Fulbright Scholarship is, I initially felt like it was a long shot. However, I decided to focus entirely on the process rather than the pressure. I poured my energy into drafting a Statement of Purpose, a clear Study Plan, and gathering my documents just to give it my best shot. Because I approached it without the burden of high expectations, the application process actually felt much smoother. It allowed my authentic voice to come through, I suppose.
How is (was) Your Experience at Brandeis University
My time at Brandeis University was hands down the most transformative academic experience of my life. What made it exceptional was the learning culture fostered by the faculty; they constantly reminded us that deep understanding, rather than grade competition, should be our primary focus. This unique environment took away the anxiety of competing for grades and replaced it with a profound sense of personal responsibility. Knowing the professors trusted us and evaluated us encouragingly actually pushed me to work even harder; I wanted to truly earn and justify the knowledge behind my results.
Ultimately, I graduated with a perfect 4.0 GPA, but what I value even more is the global perspective I gained from collaborating with classmates spanning from Asia and Europe to Africa and the Americas. The university has a great campus, but the support I received from the faculty and staff made all the difference. The university has a designated Academic Advisor for each international student. I started receiving encouraging words and welcome wishes from my Advisor months before joining the University.
What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Scholarship?
After my master’s degree, I left the school and joined the Royal Institute of Management, a premier management institute in Bhutan. Currently, I teach Economics to MBA students and also short-term courses to civil servants, corporate employees and other organizations.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
While my undergraduate academic record was decent but not highly competitive, I had strong foundational milestones, such as ranking first nationally in my country’s Year 12 board examinations. However, I truly believe the deciding factor in my Fulbright selection was the authenticity of my Statement of Purpose and Study Plan. I didn’t try to write what I thought the committee wanted to hear; instead, I was completely genuine about my goals, my challenges, and my vision. Ultimately, that sincerity and clarity carried the most weight.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
I would spend more time preparing for the GRE.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
In my experience, prestigious programs like the Fulbright Scholarship do not simply look at the academic excellence you have achieved. While a strong track record proves your ability, they are ultimately interested in your future impact- what you will actually do after the program. Because of this, the most critical step is finding your inner call and being completely genuine in your Statement of Purpose.
