My name is Crystal Tang. I grew up in and completed my A levels in Singapore in science, mathematics, and economics. I decided to pursue an undergraduate degree in the broader field of design and architecture (ended up majoring in urban planning) because I wanted to explore a more creative field and broaden my skill set.
International Undergraduate Scholarship at the University of Melbourne Details
I received the International Undergraduate Scholarship at the University of Melbourne. This was a 50% fee remission (i.e., I paid half the international student fees).
Were You Offered any Other Scholarships?
Received this offer quite early, so I don’t recall following through with other scholarship applications (this was in 2014, so quite long ago).
Educational Background
I believe this scholarship was grade-based. I obtained straight As in my A-level subjects.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to the University of Melbourne?
This scholarship was automatically considered with the application when I applied for it in 2014, so I did not have to take any additional steps on top of the usual university application.
How Is (was) Your Experience at the University of Melbourne?
I have had a positive experience. Melbourne is a great city for international students (and workers), and the University is located centrally in the city. There are plenty of opportunities to explore interest areas through breadth subjects and an active student union that looks out for student welfare.
How Do You Rate the University of Melbourne Academically and Why?
The University is world-class and academically rigorous, with strong research links to international institutions. The academic experience will probably differ between faculties, but I believe that the university as a whole provides a strong academic experience.
How Does the University of Melbourne Support International Students?
There are optional activities and mentorship programs for students who choose to do so. Many student clubs have a large population of international students.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
As above, this was based on A-level grades.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
N/A. Perhaps might have spent more time researching different options, however, I am happy with where this opportunity has taken me.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
I would encourage people not to hold back in applying for opportunities, even if they don’t feel confident. The process of applying for a competitive opportunity is one that is refined through life, and it is good to start building that skill early!
