The Journey

My name is Chiambeng Ignatius Munchim Junior, and I am from Cameroon. I was born in Yaoundé and grew up with a strong interest in leadership, public affairs, sustainability, and the role that young people can play in shaping their communities.

I am currently pursuing Political Studies at the American University of Beirut (AUB) as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar. I chose Political Studies because I want to better understand how institutions, governments, and international organizations respond to the challenges facing societies. In the long term, I hope to build a career in diplomacy and international development, particularly at the intersection of climate change, governance, and sustainable development.

My interest in this field developed from both my academic experiences and my involvement in community and youth leadership initiatives. I have always been interested in understanding not only the problems communities face, but also how policies and institutions can be designed to address them.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Details

I received the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program scholarship at the American University of Beirut (AUB).

The scholarship provides comprehensive financial support for my studies, covering the major costs associated with pursuing my education at AUB. This support has made it possible for me to study at an internationally respected institution without the financial burden that would otherwise have made such an opportunity extremely difficult.

Educational Background

Before joining AUB, I completed my secondary education at Sacred Heart College Mankon in Bamenda, Cameroon, where I studied the science curriculum.

Throughout my secondary education, I was actively involved in leadership and community initiatives. I served in several leadership positions, including Main Class Prefect, Main Sanitation Prefect, Editor-in-Chief of my school magazine, and Coordinator of the Environmental Club.

These experiences helped me develop skills in leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and community engagement. They also strengthened my interest in environmental issues and public affairs.

Academically, I performed strongly in my secondary education. I was among the top-performing students nationally in the Cameroon GCE Ordinary Level examination, ranking within the top 1% of candidates in my session.

My academic background gave me the discipline necessary to handle a competitive university application, while my leadership and extracurricular experiences helped me develop a broader profile beyond academics.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to American University of Beirut (AUB)?

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Open Dreams was one of my main sources of information. They introduced me to opportunities I might not have discovered on my own and helped me understand how to assess different universities and scholarships.

I also researched university websites, scholarship platforms, and other online resources. I learned to look beyond whether a scholarship was simply “fully funded” and consider its eligibility requirements, coverage, deadlines, and overall fit.

Yes. I took the SAT, for which I obtained a score of 1350.

My preparation involved becoming familiar with the structure of each examination, practicing regularly, reviewing my mistakes, and improving my time management.

I found that consistent practice was more useful than simply studying for long hours occasionally. Understanding the format of the examination also helped me become more comfortable with the types of questions I would encounter.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

Open Dreams played an important role in preparing me for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application. They helped me understand the application process, prepare my documents, and become more confident in presenting my experiences and aspirations.

Since the final stage involved an interview with the Mastercard Foundation team, I focused particularly on understanding my own story, achievements, challenges, leadership experiences, and future goals. Open Dreams’ guidance helped me prepare for this conversation while remaining authentic and honest about my journey.

The interview gave me the opportunity to explain who I was, where I came from, and what I hoped to accomplish with the opportunity.

How is Your Experience at American University of Beirut (AUB)?

My experience at the American University of Beirut has been very enriching.

Being at AUB has exposed me to students from different countries, cultures, and academic backgrounds. This has broadened my understanding of international issues and has challenged me to think beyond my own experiences.

Academically, studying Political Studies has also allowed me to explore questions surrounding governance, institutions, political systems, and society in greater depth.

Beyond the classroom, I have continued to engage in leadership and extracurricular activities, which has allowed me to develop skills in communication, teamwork, advocacy, and organizing initiatives.

One of the things I value most about the experience is the opportunity to learn from people who approach the same global challenges from very different perspectives.

How Do You Rate American University of Beirut (AUB) Academically?

I would rate AUB very highly academically.

One of the major strengths of the university is the quality of its academic environment. Students are encouraged not simply to memorize information but to question assumptions, analyze evidence, engage in discussion, and develop independent perspectives.

The diversity of the student body also adds significant value to the learning experience. In Political Studies especially, discussions become much more meaningful when students bring perspectives shaped by different countries and political contexts.

How Does American University of Beirut (AUB) Support International Students?

AUB provides a diverse and international environment, which makes it easier for students from different backgrounds to integrate into university life.

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program also provides an important support system for scholars beyond financial assistance. Being part of a community of scholars creates opportunities for mentorship, networking, leadership development, and personal growth.

For an international student, having access to a supportive community is extremely valuable because adapting to a new academic and cultural environment can be challenging.

What Did You Pursue After the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program?

Would Potential Students Have Any Problems Academically Not Knowing the Native Language of the Country (Only Answer if the Country That You Are Studying Is Not an English-Speaking Country). (optional)*

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

I believe the strongest part of my application was the coherence between my experiences, values, and aspirations.

I was not simply presenting myself as a student with good grades. I was able to demonstrate a pattern of leadership and community involvement that had developed over time.

My experiences in environmental initiatives, student leadership, youth development, and community engagement reflected genuine interests that connected with my long-term goals.

I also believe authenticity mattered. Rather than trying to construct what I thought a scholarship committee wanted to hear, I tried to clearly communicate my own story, challenges, experiences, ambitions, and the kind of impact I hoped to create.

Ultimately, I think a strong application should answer three questions clearly:

Who are you? What have you done with the opportunities you have had? And what will you do with the opportunity you are asking for?

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

If I were going through the process again, I would start preparing even earlier.

Scholarship applications involve many moving parts: academic records, standardized tests, recommendation letters, essays, personal statements, financial documents, and deadlines. Starting early gives you enough time to improve each component rather than trying to complete everything at the last minute.

I would also spend more time researching scholarships that are specifically aligned with my academic interests and personal profile.

Most importantly, I would remind myself earlier in the process that rejection from one scholarship does not mean that you are not qualified. Scholarships are highly competitive, and there are many factors involved in selection.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

My biggest advice is: do not wait until you feel like the "perfect candidate" before applying.

Start searching early. Build a list of opportunities, understand their requirements, and work systematically toward meeting them.

I would also encourage students to develop themselves beyond academics. Good grades matter, but scholarship committees often want to understand your leadership, values, community involvement, character, and potential impact.

Another important lesson is to tell your own story. Do not copy the language or strategy of another successful applicant. Your experiences may seem ordinary to you, but the way you reflect on those experiences and connect them to your goals can make your application powerful.

Finally, apply widely and do not be discouraged by rejection. A scholarship application is not only a competition; it is also an opportunity to understand yourself better, clarify your goals, and learn how to communicate your story.

For students from backgrounds where financial limitations make studying abroad seem impossible, I would especially say: do not eliminate yourself before the scholarship committee does. If you meet the eligibility requirements, give yourself the chance to be considered.
