The Journey
My name is Asif Iqbal. I was born and raised in Khulna, a coastal city in southern Bangladesh known for its extensive river systems, shipbuilding, and related industries. It’s also close proximity to the Sundarbans, the world’s largest mangrove forest. Growing up in an environment surrounded by nature and diverse ecosystems naturally sparked my curiosity about the biological world. From an early age, I was naturally observant and reflective. While I enjoyed spending time with family and friends, I often found myself especially fascinated by the world around me and the biological processes taking place within it. I was particularly interested in observing the life cycles and behaviors of small organisms such as ants and termites. This early curiosity became the foundation of my interest in biology and scientific research. During my school years, I was especially drawn to laboratory activities, where my teachers and supervisors recognized my enthusiasm and attention to detail during biology practical sessions.
As I progressed through high school, my growing interest in biology and the sciences inspired me to explore a career in medicine. This exploration ultimately led me to discover another field where I could combine my interest in biology with my passion for science and problem-solving: pharmaceutical sciences. I therefore pursued my undergraduate degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Khulna, graduating in March 2014.
Following graduation, I began building practical experience in the pharmaceutical industry. I worked at Healthcare Pharmaceuticals for one year and eight months, from May 2014 to December 2015, followed by five years at ACI Limited from January 2016 to December 2020. These experiences provided me with valuable exposure to the pharmaceutical industry and helped me develop a deeper understanding of how scientific knowledge can be applied to real-world healthcare needs. More importantly, my professional experience strengthened my desire to explore the scientific and research aspects of pharmaceutical development in greater depth. With this growing interest, I decided to expand my academic training and pursue higher education in the United States. I am currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Texas A&M University. The program is designed to take approximately four years, although the duration may vary depending on the progress and scope of the research.
My current research focuses on drug delivery systems designed to target different organs in animal models. My work involves both in vitro and in vivo research, allowing me to develop a broad understanding of drug delivery, experimental design, and translational research.
Throughout my journey, my curiosity about biology has continued to evolve into a strong interest in pharmaceutical research and innovation. My professional experience in the pharmaceutical industry, combined with my doctoral research, has given me the opportunity to develop both practical and scientific perspectives. Ultimately, my motivation for pursuing advanced education in pharmaceutical sciences comes from a desire to develop translational skills that can help bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and their application in the pharmaceutical industry, contributing to the development of more effective and innovative healthcare solutions.
Graduate Assistantships Details
I received a fully funded Ph.D. offer from Texas A&M University in May 2023 and was selected as a Graduate Assistant in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. I joined the program in the Spring 2024 semester.
According to my offer letter, my funding package provides an annual stipend of approximately $25,000 to support my living expenses. In addition, the university provides funding toward my tuition and health insurance, bringing the total value of my annual funding package to approximately $62,000. This funding allows me to pursue my Ph.D. full-time while working as a Graduate Assistant and conducting research in pharmaceutical sciences.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
Yes, I received other funded Ph.D. opportunities before joining Texas A&M University. In October 2022, I received a Ph.D. offer from the University of Connecticut (UConn) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, where I began working as a Graduate Assistant, first as a Teaching Assistant and later as a Research Assistant. The funding package provided approximately $30,000 annually, along with a tuition waiver and health insurance coverage. Before joining UConn, I was completing my master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California, where I began my dissertation in January 2021. That program also provided financial support in the form of an approximately $21,400 annual stipend, although health insurance was not included in the funding package and had to be obtained separately. My academic journey eventually led me to transition to Texas A&M University in Spring 2024, where I continued my doctoral studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a fully funded Graduate Assistantship.
Educational Background
I earned a four-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm.) degree from the University of Khulna in 2014. My undergraduate education provided me with a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences and, combined with my professional experience, helped shape my long-term interest in advanced research. Immediately after graduation, I joined Healthcare Pharmaceuticals as a Production Officer, where I gained valuable hands-on experience and had the opportunity to observe pharmaceutical manufacturing processes firsthand. This practical exposure strengthened my interest in understanding pharmaceutical science at a deeper level and motivated me to pursue higher education. I later joined the company of ACI Limited, where I progressed professionally and was promoted to oversee a specialized and well-established packaging section. In this role, I developed valuable leadership, management, and organizational skills while coordinating with multiple departments, including Quality Assurance, Engineering, Product Development, Marketing, Supply Chain, and Warehousing. I was also responsible for managing a team of approximately 70 employees on a day-to-day basis. These academic and professional experiences gave me both a strong practical understanding of the pharmaceutical industry and a growing desire to contribute through research and innovation. As my career progressed, I became increasingly interested in pursuing research-based graduate education that would allow me to build specialized expertise and work with advanced research facilities and technologies. This combination of my academic foundation, industry experience, leadership skills, and passion for scientific discovery ultimately prepared me to pursue advanced studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
I achieved a 4-year Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) from the University of Khulna in 2014. My cGPA was 3.04 (narrowly escaped the cutoffs for most of the US Universities). Right after my undergrad result was published, I joined Healthcare Pharma and worked as a production officer. The hands-on skills, watching the processes there live happening before my eyes, strengthened my practical resolve to dive deep into higher studies. Later, I joined ACI, where I got promoted and assigned as in charge of a less intense but highly popular packaging section. There, I learned management skills, coordination between departments such as quality assurance, engineering, product development, marketing, supply chain, and warehouses, as well as managing my floor teeming with as many as 70 people on a day-to-day basis. While working there, I felt like utilizing my intellectual properties for research-based study, which requires highly specialized state-of-the-art research facilities that are not present in our country.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Texas A&M University?
How Did You Find Information About Graduate Assistantships and Texas A&M University?
Mostly through online searches and referrals through known people, friends, colleagues at workplace and my previous educational institutions.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?
I took the GRE General Test and TOEFL. I used the Magoosh online platform for regular learning and practice. Later, I followed other sources available online for exam preparation, such as Manhattan, KMF, etc.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Graduate Assistantships?
I evaluated my academic transcript via WES (World Education Service) and then, along with those, I had to send my test scores (GRE, TOEFL) with letters of recommendation from my mentors from the university I attended previously. I waited for the Fall semester and applied for it. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I had to defer my enrollment from Fall20 to Spring 21 at WesternU Pomona.
How is Your Experience at Texas A&M University?
My experience at each institution has been unique and enriching, both academically and personally. When I first arrived in California, it was my first experience living overseas, so adapting to a new culture and academic environment while navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic was an important learning experience. Although classes and examinations were largely conducted online, laboratory research required us to work in person so that our projects could continue progressing. Throughout this period, the graduate coordinators, faculty members, and program directors were extremely supportive and always willing to provide guidance. With their help, and especially the support of my adviser, Dr. Kabir Lutfy, I successfully defended my master’s dissertation within the planned two-year timeframe.
My experience at UConn was also memorable. Coming from the tropical climate of Bangladesh, experiencing snow for the first time was fascinating, and I greatly enjoyed the beautiful campus, with its green lawns, lakes, and historic buildings. However, after an accidental fall on the snow while rushing to catch a bus, I developed a persistent nerve-related injury that required several months of physical therapy. Balancing my recovery with an intensive first-year coursework and research schedule became challenging, which ultimately led me to make the decision to continue my doctoral studies at Texas A&M University. Although the transition was unexpected, it became an opportunity to continue my academic journey in a new environment and further develop my research interests.
I am currently in my third year of Ph.D. study at Texas A&M University. The College of Pharmacy has two campuses, College Station and Kingsville, each offering specialized research facilities and expertise. The College Station campus houses the Dean’s Office and research facilities in areas such as pharmaceutical technology and biochemistry and genetics, while the Kingsville campus focuses on areas including medicinal chemistry, drug delivery, and platelet biologics. Together, these facilities create a strong interdisciplinary research environment focused on drug development and innovative drug delivery systems, which aligns closely with my academic background and long-term research interests.
How Do You Rate Texas A&M University Academically?
I would consider each institution I attended academically strong, although their strengths and areas of specialization differ. WesternU has a smaller campus but is well regarded for pharmacy education in California and provided me with a strong foundation in pharmaceutical sciences. UConn has a pharmacy program with more than a century of history and benefits from its location within a major biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry region, offering experienced faculty, research opportunities, and industry connections. Texas A&M is a highly research-focused university with particular strengths in biotechnology, veterinary sciences, chemistry, and engineering. Although its Pharmaceutical Sciences program is relatively newer, its multidisciplinary environment provides excellent opportunities for collaboration across fields and supports innovative research in drug development and delivery.
How Does Texas A&M University Support International Students?
The institution provides strong support for international students through dedicated advisors, orientation programs, and guidance with academic and administrative matters. Faculty and staff are approachable and supportive, helping students adjust to the academic environment and address any challenges they may face. Overall, the welcoming environment and available resources make the transition to studying in the U.S. much easier for international students.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe my application stood out because it reflected a well-rounded combination of academic preparation, professional pharmaceutical industry experience, strong standardized test scores, and research accomplishments, including several first-author publications. While no single aspect of my profile was extraordinary on its own, the combination demonstrated consistency, scientific curiosity, practical industry knowledge, and a clear commitment to pharmaceutical research. I believe this balanced profile allowed the admissions committees to see not only my academic potential but also my research experience, professional maturity, and readiness to contribute meaningfully to a graduate research environment.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were going through the process again, I would start much earlier and give myself more time to research programs, identify funding opportunities, prepare application materials, and connect with potential mentors. The overall approach would remain the same, as it worked well for me, but starting earlier would allow me to be more strategic, explore more opportunities, and submit stronger applications without feeling rushed.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My advice to anyone applying for a similar scholarship is to remain persistent, patient, and confident, regardless of the challenges or setbacks along the way. Circumstances may sometimes slow your progress, but staying composed, continuing to improve yourself, and consistently pursuing opportunities can eventually lead to success. Most importantly, never lose hope, to keep moving forward, because sometimes the opportunities that take the longest to reach are the ones that make the journey worthwhile.
