The Journey

My name is Aleena Afzaal and I’m from Pakistan. I completed my MA in Politics at New York University in 2023 through the Fulbright scholarship. My work focuses on gender, media, and political narratives in South Asia. I chose to pursue this field because I was interested in understanding how public discourse, especially through print and media, has historically shaped the political positioning of women in the region.

Fulbright Scholarship Details

I received the Fulbright scholarship, which fully funded my master’s at NYU, including tuition, living expenses, travel, and health insurance. I also received the NYU GSAS tuition scholarship as a complement to my Fulbright funding.

Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?

I received USD 19,000 from the Rutgers Public Affairs program. Graduate School. The two scholarships were: Meritorious Achievement Scholarship and International Chancellor's Merit Scholarship.

Educational Background

I have an undergraduate degree in History. My coursework and research were consistently focused on politics, gender, and South Asian history, which translated directly into my graduate work. At NYU, my thesis examined how print media was used to construct and contest narratives around women in politics in Pakistan.

How Did You Prepare to Apply to New York University?

I didn’t apply very broadly. I focused on programs that actually fit what I wanted to study. Since I was applying through Fulbright, I did not have to directly apply to most of the programs.

How Did You Find Information About Fulbright Scholarship and New York University?

Mostly through official websites and talking to people who had already gone through the process. The Fulbright website was the main starting point, and then I worked from there.

Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them?

Yes, I took the GRE/TOEFL. Preparation was fairly structured but not excessive, mostly consistent practice using official material rather than trying to do too much at once.

How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Fulbright Scholarship?

I focused on making sure my application made sense as a whole. That my academic interests, past work, and future plans were clearly connected. Most of my effort went into getting my statement of purpose right and making sure my writing sample reflected the kind of work I wanted to do going forward.

What Did You Pursue After the Fulbright Scholarship?

I now work in socio-economic research development.

What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?

Clarity and consistency. I wasn’t trying to do too many things at once. My application had a clear research focus, and my previous work supported it. My writing sample and thesis topic were aligned with what I said I wanted to study. I also kept the writing simple, no unnecessary jargon or over-selling. I focused on being direct about what I wanted to do and why.

What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?

I would have been more deliberate early on in thinking about what I wanted to do after my master’s and explored different possible paths alongside it. While I had a clear academic direction, I think mapping out multiple trajectories, whether in research, policy, or further study, earlier in the process would have helped me make more informed decisions later on.

What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?

Be specific. Don’t try to sound impressive by being vague. It’s much stronger to show depth in one area than to list multiple interests. Also, get your essays reviewed by people who will give you honest feedback, not just say it’s good.

At the same time, not getting a scholarship does not mean your work or credentials are any less. These processes are highly competitive. If 100 people are applying, most of them are strong candidates. At that point, outcomes are not entirely in your control and often come down to fit and timing. Put your best foot forward, but don’t let rejections discourage you. There are multiple paths, and one decision does not define your trajectory.
