The Journey
My name is Ahmad Shoeb Hashmi, and I am a dentist from India currently pursuing a dual-degree Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. In 2026, I was selected as one of 14 Sommer Scholars worldwide and became the first dentist to receive the Sommer Scholarship in its 20-year history.
My academic journey began with dentistry, where I developed an interest in clinical research, disease prevention, and improving access to healthcare. Through my clinical training and community health initiatives, I became increasingly interested in the broader factors influencing health and the role of public health in addressing healthcare inequalities.
I decided to pursue an MPH to develop expertise in epidemiology, research, and population health. I chose to combine it with an MBA to gain skills in healthcare strategy, finance, management, and entrepreneurship. My long-term goal is to work at the intersection of healthcare, public health, and business, contributing to healthcare innovation and improving the delivery of health services.
Sommer Scholarship Details
I received the Sommer Scholarship at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the United States. I was selected as one of 14 scholars worldwide in 2026 and became the first dentist to receive the scholarship in its 20-year history.
The scholarship is valued at more than US$100,000 and provides full tuition coverage, a monthly stipend, leadership training, and exclusive networking opportunities with leaders in biomedical science and public health.
For me, this scholarship represents more than financial assistance. It provides an opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, build relationships with scholars from diverse backgrounds, and develop the skills needed to address complex public health challenges.
Were You Offered Any Other Scholarships?
In addition to the Sommer Scholarship, I had other scholarship opportunities, including the following:
- Dean's Scholarship
- Frost Scholarship
- Aga Khan Scholarship
These opportunities highlight the importance of exploring multiple funding options when applying to international universities. Scholarship eligibility, award amounts, and funding conditions vary by institution and program, so applicants should review the relevant requirements carefully.
Educational Background
I completed my Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) at Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College, Aligarh Muslim University, India. I graduated as the second-ranked student in my undergraduate class of 50, with a World Education Services (WES)-verified GPA of 3.74.
I subsequently pursued postgraduate dental training in Periodontology at the same institution, gaining experience in clinical periodontology, oral biology, and translational research.
My educational background provided a strong foundation in clinical practice, scientific reasoning, and evidence-based healthcare. Alongside my formal education, I developed an interest in systematic reviews, meta-analysis, epidemiology, and public health research. I have contributed to peer-reviewed publications and participated in research and teaching activities.
I have also been involved in community health initiatives. Through Shine in Smile Foundation, which I founded, I helped organize oral health camps that screened more than 900 people. These experiences helped me understand the challenges faced by underserved populations and strengthened my interest in improving healthcare access.
Together, my clinical, academic, and community experiences motivated me to pursue further education in public health and business.
How Did You Prepare to Apply to Johns Hopkins University?
I began by identifying programs that aligned with my academic background and long-term career goals. I wanted to build on my clinical experience while gaining expertise in population health, healthcare management, and strategy.
I reviewed university websites, program curricula, scholarship opportunities, admission requirements, and faculty interests. I also considered the research environment, networking opportunities, and career pathways available to graduates.
An important part of my preparation was understanding how my previous experiences connected to my future goals. Rather than presenting my clinical work, research, and community service as separate achievements, I focused on explaining how they had shaped my interest in public health and healthcare leadership.
How Did You Find Information About Sommer Scholarship and Johns Hopkins University?
I used university websites and official admissions resources to understand program requirements, eligibility criteria, deadlines, and funding opportunities. I also explored information about the experiences of current students and graduates.
My advice is to research both the academic program and its funding options early. Applicants should look beyond university rankings and consider whether a program offers the training, mentorship, financial support, and professional opportunities that align with their goals.
Did You Take Any Standardized Tests? If So, How Did You Prepare for Them? How did you prepare?
I took the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in September 2025 and scored 8.0 overall.
My individual scores were:
- Reading: 8.0
- Writing: 7.5
- Listening: 8.5
- Speaking: 7.0
I prepared for the IELTS independently using YouTube tutorials and other online resources. I focused on understanding the test format, practising different question types, and improving my skills across all four sections. Using freely available resources allowed me to prepare at my own pace without enrolling in a paid coaching program.
How Did You Prepare to Apply for the Sommer Scholarship?
I focused on presenting an application that reflected my academic preparation, research experience, leadership, and commitment to improving healthcare.
My dental education provided a clinical foundation, while my research activities demonstrated my interest in scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice. My involvement in community health initiatives showed my commitment to addressing healthcare challenges beyond individual patient care.
I also highlighted my experience in teaching, mentoring students, and contributing to academic and research projects. These experiences helped explain why I wanted to pursue further education at the intersection of public health and business.
I believe that a strong scholarship application should communicate a clear and consistent story. It should explain what you have done, what you have learned from those experiences, why the program is the right next step, and how you intend to use the opportunity in the future.
How is Your Experience at Johns Hopkins University?
My experience at Johns Hopkins has provided an opportunity to learn in an interdisciplinary academic environment alongside students and faculty from diverse professional backgrounds. The MPH/MBA program allows me to approach healthcare challenges from different perspectives. Public health training helps me understand population-level health needs, epidemiology, and evidence-based interventions. Business education adds a framework for thinking about strategy, organizational management, finance, and the implementation of sustainable solutions. Being part of the Sommer Scholars community also provides opportunities for leadership development, networking, and engagement with professionals working across public health and biomedical fields.
How Do You Rate Johns Hopkins University Academically?
I consider Johns Hopkins an excellent academic environment because of its emphasis on research, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary learning. The Bloomberg School of Public Health provides training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and population health, while the Carey Business School complements this with business and management education. The MPH/MBA program is particularly relevant for students interested in healthcare consulting, pharmaceutical strategy, digital health, research, and healthcare leadership. I also value the opportunity to learn from faculty and peers with different academic and professional backgrounds. These perspectives encourage students to consider healthcare challenges from clinical, public health, economic, and organizational viewpoints.
How Does Johns Hopkins University Support International Students?
International students can access university resources designed to support their academic and administrative transition. These include international student advising, academic resources, student communities, and career services.
My advice to incoming international students is to familiarize themselves with university resources before arriving and to seek guidance whenever needed. Connecting with fellow students, faculty, and academic advisers early can also help make the transition smoother.
What Did You Pursue After the Sommer Scholarship?
I began my MPH/MBA dual-degree program at Johns Hopkins University in 2026 and expect to complete both degrees in 2028. My current focus is on developing expertise in epidemiology, healthcare strategy, management, and research while continuing to build my professional network. I am particularly interested in healthcare consulting, pharmaceutical strategy, digital health, and clinical research. In the long term, I hope to combine my clinical background with public health and business training to contribute to healthcare innovation and improve the delivery of healthcare services.
What Do You Think Made Your Application Stand Out?
I believe the combination of clinical training, research experience, academic performance, leadership, and community engagement strengthened my application. My background in dentistry gave me a clinical understanding of healthcare challenges. My research experience helped me develop skills in scientific inquiry and evidence-based practice, while my community work exposed me to the practical barriers people face in accessing healthcare. I also had experience mentoring students, contributing to academic initiatives, and participating in leadership activities. These experiences helped me develop a clear rationale for pursuing further education in public health and business. Another important factor was the connection between my previous experiences and future goals. I wanted to develop the skills needed to address healthcare challenges at both the population and organizational levels. My application reflected this direction rather than presenting my achievements as an unrelated list.
What Would You Have Done Differently if You Were Going Through the Process Again?
If I were going through the application process again, I would begin even earlier and spend more time understanding the specific priorities of each program and scholarship.I would also try to connect with current students, alumni, and faculty earlier in the process to learn more about the academic environment, funding opportunities, and career pathways. Finally, I would focus on communicating my experiences more concisely. Applicants often have several achievements, but the challenge is identifying the experiences that best demonstrate their motivation, preparation, and potential.
What Advice Would You Give Those Looking to Apply for a Similar Scholarship?
My first piece of advice is to start early and research thoroughly. Understand the eligibility criteria, application deadlines, required documents, and funding opportunities for each institution. Second, do not underestimate the value of your existing experiences. Research projects, community service, leadership roles, teaching, and professional experience can all contribute to a strong application when they are relevant to your goals.
Third, develop a clear narrative. Your statement of purpose should explain why you chose the field, how your previous experiences prepared you, why the institution is suitable for you, and what you intend to do with the education you receive. Fourth, explore multiple funding opportunities. Do not assume that significant scholarships are available only to applicants from particular academic backgrounds. Read the eligibility criteria carefully and apply to opportunities that match your profile.
Finally, do not be discouraged by the competitiveness of international scholarships. Focus on presenting an authentic application that reflects your experiences, motivations, and future potential. A strong application is not simply a list of achievements. It explains what those achievements mean and how they have shaped your goals.
My journey has taught me that a clear sense of direction, consistent effort, and a willingness to learn can help you identify opportunities that align with your ambitions. I encourage prospective applicants to research widely, prepare carefully, and apply with confidence.
