If you’re looking to study abroad but are worried about the costs, India can be an excellent option. The country offers many recognized universities and comparatively affordable tuition and living costs. Most foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa before traveling to India. Nationals of Nepal and Bhutan generally do not need a visa to enter India, while nationals of Maldives do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. If you are planning a longer study program, confirm your requirements with the nearest Indian Mission before you travel. Student visas are generally issued for the duration of the course or up to five years, whichever is less.
Among the main requirements for a student visa is a letter of admission from a recognized Indian educational institution, such as an Indian university. Foreign students should also register on the Study in India portal and obtain a Study in India ID, which is required for foreign students seeking higher education in India. If you do not yet have a firm admission letter, an Indian Mission or Post may grant a Provisional Student Visa based on a provisional admission certificate, letter of offer, or admission advertisement. A Provisional Student Visa is valid for six months and may be extendable by the jurisdictional FRRO/FRO for up to another six months.
Keep in mind that visa validity is counted from the date of issue, not from the date you arrive in India. Here’s everything you need to know about applying for a student visa for India.
Steps on Applying for an Indian Student Visa
Step 1. Apply to an Indian University
Before applying for a student visa for India, apply to and get admitted to a recognized Indian educational institution. If you are applying through Study in India, register on the official portal, get your Study in India ID, apply to your preferred institutions, and accept an offer letter before applying for the visa. Once you receive your letter of admission, make sure you also meet the additional eligibility requirements below:
- You are a foreign student coming to India to pursue regular, full-time academic studies at a recognized institution.
- You have proof of admission to a full-time academic course and evidence of financial support.
- You have a “No Objection Certificate” from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, if you are pursuing a medical or paramedical course.
- If your spouse or dependent family members are traveling with you, they must apply for an Entry Visa, not a Tourist Visa. Their visa end date will usually coincide with the end date of the principal visa holder’s visa.
Step 2. Prepare Your Online Application Form
After confirming that you’re eligible to apply for an Indian student visa, prepare your requirements as soon as possible. You can start by completing the online application form on the Indian Visa Online portal. Choose the appropriate visa application option and make sure all information you provide is accurate before submitting the form.
If you can’t complete the application in one sitting, save your application and use the Complete Partially Filled Regular/Paper Visa Form option later. After completing your application form, keep your Application ID. You’ll need it for further communication with the Indian Mission and for checking your application status.
Step 3. Online Booking for Appointment and Completing ePayment
After submitting your application, the system may ask whether you want to schedule an appointment and make payment online. If you choose this option, the portal will guide you through selecting an appointment date and time with the concerned Indian Mission and calculating the visa fee, service charge, VAT, or other applicable charges.
To pay online, choose the “ePayment” option when it is available. Appointment scheduling and ePayment are not available for every Indian Mission abroad. If they are not available in your country, print your submitted online application form and bring it, along with your payment and supporting documents, to the Indian Mission or Indian Visa Application Center.
Step 4. Get Your Other Requirements Ready
Incomplete requirements or incorrectly formatted photos can delay or affect your application, so prepare a checklist before submitting your documents. Document requirements can vary by country, so always check the website of the Indian Mission responsible for your place of application.
For the photo, make sure it meets the following formatting requirements before submitting the digital copy with your online application:
- JPEG format
- Size: 10 KB to 300 KB
- Equal height and width
- Full face, front view, and eyes open
- Full head centered in the frame, from the top of the hair to the bottom of the chin
- Head measurement of 1 inch to 1 3/8 inches (25 mm to 35 mm)
- Plain light-colored or white background
- No shadows on the face or background
- No borders
Step 5. Bring Your Requirements to the Indian Embassy
As mentioned above, you may be able to schedule an appointment online after submitting the application form. Bring your complete requirements on your appointment date, as well as your payment for the application fee if you have not already paid online.
If online appointment scheduling is not available in your country, check the relevant Indian Mission’s website for appointment instructions. You can find the list of Indian Mission websites here. You should also check the Mission website before submitting your requirements in person to confirm local rules, fees, and document requirements.
Step 6. Wait for Application Result
The minimum visa processing time is typically three working days from the date the Indian Mission or Post receives the application, depending on the applicant’s nationality and excluding special cases. You can check the status of your application through the Indian Visa Online website. Keep your Application ID and passport number ready.
Step 7. Receive Your Passport with Visa
Once your visa is approved, you can collect your passport and visa from the Indian Mission or Indian Visa Application Center. In some locations, return by post may also be available, so check the local Mission or application center website for the available collection options.
Documents Needed for Indian Student Visa Applications
When applying for a student visa for India, prepare the following documents. Requirements may vary by country, so confirm the final checklist with the Indian Mission or application center where you will apply:
- Passport with the validity required by the Indian Mission or Study in India portal
- Passport-size photographs
- Photocopy of your passport
- Proof of your residential address
- Printed copy of the completed online student visa form
- Formal admission letter from your host institution

- No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, if you are joining a medical or paramedical course
