Over the last few years, Ukraine has been struggling to open itself more to the West. The country has started a gradual transition to a steady and stable democracy, based on the solid principles of a viable market economy. Amid outbreaks of social unrest and semi-peaceful demonstrations, Ukraine is now struggling to earn the trust of its Western partners.

As part of this strategy, Ukraine’s universities have begun to offer a wide variety of Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. programs taught in the English language. As a result, an increasing number of students from Eastern Europe are visiting Ukraine to take advantage of its premium higher education standards.

Ukraine Universities’ IELTS Band Requirements

1. Cherkasy National University

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.0
  • IELTS band for graduate and postgraduate students: 6.5

The Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Ukraine. It was established in 1921 with the academic focus being on training teachers and educators for the needs of the state.

Today, the university has got over 6,000 students who are trained in nine educational-scientific institutes, departments, and schools. Of these, the Psychology Department appears to be the most popular with international students, who are attracted to its Master’s programs offered in the English language. The Medical Institute of The Bohdan Khmelnytsky National University of Cherkasy is one of the best places to earn a medical degree in Ukraine.

2. Pavo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University

The Pavo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University is one of the highest-reputed teachers-training institutions in Ukraine. Every year, it produces a large number of highly-skilled and motivated pedagogues who disseminate valuable knowledge and good teaching practices even to the world’s remotest regions.

Not surprisingly, the number of the university’s programs taught in English is increasing every year. The beginnings of this higher education provider in Ukraine can be traced back to 1930 when it opened four departments and accepted 120 students.

Today, it has got twelve different faculties and institutes with a total of 39 departments. The Department of Foreign Languages of the Pavo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical is one of the best places to earn a degree in English and American Studies in Ukraine. Most of the professors and assistant professors are native speakers.

To enroll in this university in Ukraine, you need at least a 6.0 IELTS Band.

3. Chernivtsi University

Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University is a public higher education provider in central Ukraine. This university was founded in 1875 under the name Franz-Josephs-Universität Czernowitz. Thus, it is probably Ukraine’s oldest university.

The academic portfolio of this university is quite impressive. It currently offers more than one hundred different undergraduate programs in four academic fields: Humanities, Sciences, Business, and Education. The Master’s programs in Computer Science and Information and Computer Engineering are taught in the English language and are very popular with young people from Eastern Europe and Western Asia.

4. Bukovinian State Medical University

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.5
  • IELTS band for graduate and postgraduate students: 7.0

The Bukovinian State Medical University is the most selective candidate on our list of universities in Ukraine with regard to the minimum IELTS scores required for admission to its Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Human Medicine. At the same time, it requires a GPA of 3.7 out of 4, or the converted equivalent, for admission to its undergraduate programs.

The university was established in 1944, at the end of WW II, and currently has just over 4,000 students. It is highly regarded for its undergraduate-cum-graduate programs in General Medicine, Dentistry, and Medical Psychology. In the first three or four years of the program, the students are trained for their Bachelor’s Degree, and the Master’s Degree takes another two years to complete.

5. Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.5
  • IELTS band for graduate and postgraduate students: 7.0

The Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas is Ukraine’s most strategically-important school. Therefore, it is highly selective with regard to the admission of international candidates to its undergraduate and graduate programs taught in the English language.

Since its establishment in 1967, the university has developed twenty-three Bachelor’s programs and twenty Master’s programs. The Department of Geodesy, Mapping and Land Management appear to be the most attractive to international students, especially for its Master’s program in Cadastral and Land Management.

6. National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.0
  • IELTS band for graduate and postgraduate students: 6.5

Metallurgy has always been an important pillar of Ukraine’s national economy. Nowhere else could one obtain better training in the field of metal processing and metallurgy than at the National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine. This higher education provider began its existence in 1899 as a department of the Katerinoslavsky Higher Mining School.

Now, it has got ten different faculties, including one of Humanities. Each faculty has got between five and ten departments, and each department offers at least one program where English is the principal language of instruction.  

7. Alfred Nobel University

  • IELTS band for undergraduate students: 6.0
  • IELTS band for graduate and postgraduate students: 6.5

The Alfred Nobel University is the most internationally open of all higher education institutions in Ukraine. This becomes clear from the well-organized and highly-informative English language version of its official website. IELTS Band Requirements at this university in Ukraine is 6.0 and 6.5 for undergraduate and graduate students, respectively.

The university was established in 1993 with the main academic focus being on Economics, Business, and management. Its Bachelor’s programs in Marketing Management, Tourism Management, and Financial Management, and Computer Technologies are all taught in English.

Conclusion

From the paragraphs above it becomes clear that an average IELTS score of about 6.0 should be enough to secure admission to most of Ukraine’s top universities. Of these, the Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas appears to be the most selective school, owing mostly to its strategic importance to Ukraine’s economy. National Metallurgical Academy of Ukraine also offers many internationally-recognized programs in the field of metal fabrication and processing.
