Ireland hosts about 35,000 international students enrolled in at least eight recognized universities. Ireland IELTS Band Requirements

1. Trinity College Dublin

Also known as the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth, Trinity College was established in 1592. It is one of the universities whose founding was overseen by Queen Elizabeth I. Trinity College Dublin is Ireland’s oldest university that is still operational and is widely considered as the country’s most prestigious institution for higher education. It is a sister college to Oriel College and St John’s College. A minimum of 6.5 points in IELTS is required for you to be a successful applicant. Additionally, one will also need to submit their scores in TOEFL (88 – internet-based, 230 – computer-based, and 570 – paper-based). IELTS and TOEFL are the most popular test results submitted by applicants, but the Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English and Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English are also accepted for those who score Grade C and above.

2. University College Dublin

  • IELTS band requirements: 6.5

The University College Dublin (UCD) was established in 1854 as the Catholic University of Ireland. It went through several renaming phases before settling on the current name in 1998. Apart from being one of the oldest, it is also among the largest institutions in Ireland. Currently, there are over 33,000 students enrolled in various fields of study. Its size is further justified by the number of colleges, six in total, with all of them offering a given number of specialized courses. Some of the main areas covered include engineering, business, arts, and social sciences. To be accepted as part of the community, you will need to meet some of the requirements, which include language proficiency tests. On average, you will need a minimum of 6.5 in IELTS and 90 in TOEFL tests at this university in Ireland.

3. National University of Ireland, Galway

  • IELTS band requirements: 6.5

The national university of Ireland was founded in 1908 and had several constituent universities whose degrees are awarded under the university’s name. The constituent universities are meant to provide all essential academic services except the awarding of diplomas and degrees. The National University of Ireland is one of the largest in the country, and it hosts more than 77,000 students. According to the institution’s policy, all applicants should score at least 6.5 in the IELTS test for their applications to be considered. At least 6.5 and 6.0 in the writing ability and other bands respectively should suffice.

4. University College Cork

  • IELTS band requirements: 6.5

Founded in 1845, the University College Cork has been successful during the majority of its 175 years of existence. There is about 800 academic staff employed to handle the demands of at least 15,000 students. This is a huge improvement considering the fact that it only started with 181 students taught by 23 professors. In fact, the university is on course to increase the student accommodation places by 600. You can be part of the next set of students is you meet the institution’s requirements, which include an IELTS score of 6.5 and 90 points in internet-based TOEFL test.

5. Dublin City University

After being established as the National Institute of Higher Education in 1975, Dublin City University went on to admit its first set of students five years later. In 1989, it gained university status and was re-established and renamed to Dublin City University. It currently has a total of 17,000 students guided by 624 academic staff. The students are distributed across five campuses with the main campus located in Glasnevin. Dublin City University also has six schools and faculties offering specialized programs in various areas of study. The institution offers most of its programs in English hence the need for language proficiency tests. The main tests accepted at the university in Ireland are the TOEFL and IELTS tests, with all applicants expected to score a band of at least 6.5 in the latter.

6. University of Limerick

  • IELTS band requirements: 6.5

The University of Limerick is located in Limerick, Ireland, and was established in 1972. In 1989, the institution gained university status after making huge strides in its academic status and the quality of equipment installed. As such, it went on to change its name to the University of Limerick, which remains to be one of the largest and the best in the country. It currently hosts a total of 16,000 students, 2,400 of whom are international students. Based on these statistics, you have a chance of being part of the university if you hit the threshold mark in the admission requirements. All the bands in your IELTS test should be more than 6.0, and the overall score must be at least 6.5 for you to get a chance of being accepted to the institution. Also, you will need to submit your TOEFL test score (90 – iBT) as part of the language proficiency proof.

7. Maynooth University

  • IELTS band requirements: 6.0

Another Irish university that you could join as an international student is Maynooth University, which is located in Maynooth, Ireland. It was established in 1997, making it one of the youngest universities in Ireland. Nonetheless, it has grown amazingly over its 20 years of operation. It has been able to attract many students from within and outside of Ireland. At the moment it has over 14,000 students the majority of which are undergraduate students. If you are interested in joining the institution, you have high chances since it is not too competitive. In terms of language-based requirements, you will need to submit your IELTS and TOEFL tests – a minimum of 6.0 and at least 90 points, respectively.
